My insurance sucked in the area of wls....it was actually cheaper for me to self fund the surgery at $21K.....upfront...no payments. Ouch......there went the funds I wanted to spend on a new car. All the costs of supplements, protein powder and specific wls related food.....is a fraction of the cost of the junk food diet I was on before wls. The cost of clothes is now way, way cheaper. I can buy normal sized clothes in normal stores vs having to only be able to buy clothes from big & tall stores where the prices are unbelievably high. I am not spending money on doctor bills like I was in the years leading up to surgery.....being more healthy has made a tremendous difference here. I simply go in for "check up" visits. I am no longer having to pay for prescription meds......huge benefit to my wallet. There is nothing now that isn't cheaper than before.

Starving and nervous...three days from surgery
Dub replied to PorkChopExpress's topic in The Guys’ Room
Keep on staying the course during this pre-op time. It sucks. No other way to say it. It just sucks. You will be happy to see the scale reward you daily, though. It will escalate the pace of the loss....by the time you hit your surgery date you will already be losing at a great rate. You don't have long to go...hang in there and keep on trucking. One of the greatest simple pleasures that I have now is the feeling when I walk into my gym....it's a very busy gym, too....folks everywhere. I used to get a bit anxious going in there....nervous over the extra weight I was carrying around.....nervous over being judged. Now that a good portion of the unwanted fat is gone.....so is my anxiety over walking in there. I still don't look like a guy who goes to the gym.....but I do feel more at home in there. I think you will be absolutely amazed at the timeframe that is ahead of you. The weight will burn off quickly and you will be closing in on your weight goals at a rate that will make you laugh. As you already likely know, Protein intake will be crucial for your weight training and even more so with the bypass. You will have to be consistent and disciplined on ensuring you get the right amounts at the right times. You're almost there.....a couple days away. Hang in there. -
Check out the gorgeous color to that flesh! The only way that you get that in a regular supermarket is if the add color to the fish. Our next major firearms purchase will have to wait a bit due to our medical costs this year and expected costs next year but when that time comes I'll buy my sweetie a Kimber Ultra Carry II with the Crimson Trace grips. After her brain tumor she's had difficulty at night. In fact I won't let her drive at night. A Kimber 1911 would make me more comfortable for when I'm away for work. I hear ya. I'm always looking at the "next" gun. I bought the 1911 I've always wanted on my '15 birthday....a month before my sleeve surgery. Since then, gun money has been almost nil......and likely will be for quite some time. Medical bills and such, here, too. I did take advantage of some really low prices on Tikka T3 rifles and bought one of those in 270WSM. Not sure about the caliber....will see how it does. I've always been very well served with my old .270 Win. This one is a small bit faster. Gotta get it sighted in next week, hopefully. Semi-auto's can be problematic and Murphy's Law says it'll happen at the worst times. That being said....I've never....ever had a problem with a Glock. I have a few of them and a couple 1911's. A little airweight S&W snubbie .38 that rides in a pocket holster and a .44mag Ruger pretty much round out my handguns. I can't think of anything I really need.....but still have wants, I suppose.

How do you take the calcium supplement?
Dub replied to ashleyrowles's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't know that about the iron and calcium time frame. I take it within 15-20 minutes of each other. Sent from my SM-G935V using the BariatricPal App I remember it being a question that someone asked in our group nutrition class. The rationale for the supplement dosing schedule was questioned. I'm sure our nutritionist gave an in-depth answer.....my takeaway was that the two may interfere with the absorption of each other so we should separate the two by 2+ hours. I take my Vitamins and iron with Breakfast and eat 3 of the calcium citrate chews as Snacks during the day later on (not at same time). Sure would be more convenient to take it all in the morning, but I've found a way to spread it out that works fine for me. -
Out Freakingstanding thread !!!! Killer salmon that has to be much tastier than the stuff I'm getting in the stores. Got a couple 1911's, too. Fun shooting them.....gotta love the sweet single action trigger. Great thread !!!!

I've bought them through my bariatric center and from Bariatric Advantage mail order. I'm sure you can also get them from this site here as well. -

How do you take the calcium supplement?
Dub replied to ashleyrowles's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told to continue crushing pills until my 4th week appointment. One thing about calcium.....we are told to take it 2-3 hours away from taking our Iron. Evidently they interfere with each other's absorption. -
Yup. Randy dandy.

It was easy for me because I had so much weight to lose. I simply was upfront with the key people at work and my family. Outside of that its a topic that is freely discussed if folks ask me about it. A few have gone on to seek bariatric solutions for themselves or family members. If I had been a low BMI patient at the beginning......id likely have just kept it to myself until later on.

Yup. Same here. Sleeved 11 months ago. Can't even see the scars anymore.

Pre Op diet shopping. Protein supplement advice?
Dub replied to ella37's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Chike coffee flavored Protein powder was on my approved list. I always have mixed my Protein Powder with ice and Water. -
I completely agree with you on the weight loss drugs being a bad move. My experiences with the sleeve are that eating small & healthy portions is exactly the way things go now. Regaining health and feeling better overall has made a positive impact on all aspects of life. It's something that "normal" folks don't seem to always understand.....we simply want to be at a normal weight and stay there.

What sport or competition is for me? I need suggestions
Dub replied to mi75's topic in Fitness & Exercise
Whatever you decide to do......be careful. Allow the proper time to learn the ropes and build the muscle and condition the connective tissue to avoid injuries. Having to take out to heal an injury is no fun and will drive you nuts. -
How many grams of sugar per day?
Dub replied to ashleyrowles's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Zero sugar is what I shoot for......of course that's not a number I hit everyday. -
Forgiveness. After my adventures yesterday.....I truly need lots of forgiveness.

The Pirates will be in my House in November. All 50 ECU grads in Oklahoma make the trek to Tulsa every other year. Looking forward to it. It was a tough loss yesterday, but you can't cough up the ball that much and win.

Diet after Sleeve (fear of my own sabotage)
Dub replied to stefanie0804's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There is no way short of crack addiction or AIDS that will allow you to lose weight without getting your mind focused and disciplined for the task. Spend time and do research Get professional help to get your head wrapped around the effort that will be needed......do this first. Get yourself in the mental place where you will do what must be done to support weight loss. Do this first and then the sleeve will be a tremendous tool for you. Free your mind and yer arse will follow.....
