  1. My surgeon said that we can forget to take our supplements one time, but not on a regular basis. You NEED your protein! It is VITAL! My surgeon does a mal-absorption test at 6 months and then annually. These tests are crucial to see how your body is functioning.

    weight

I weigh everyday...sometimes 2 or 3 times a day. I am just about 6 months post op. It is frustrating though. If you can help it stay away from the scale. check in once a week or once every other week so you don't get frustrated. I only lost weight about one week a month. I don't change anything I do. I end up losing about 7 to 12 pounds that week to week and a half, but still frustrating. It will come off as long as you are following the plan. Good luck!!!!
  3. I've been stalling ever since week 3. My weight loss is so erratic. Part of me has just accepted it. I just keep on doing what I am doing: eating well, exercising, and getting my protein.
  4. It's great! We did Ruby Falls, the aquarium, and a riverboat cruise one day. I walked over 20,000 steps all while wearing my 18 pound baby! The next day we did rock city, the zoo, and some fun little shops downtown.
  5. I have to plan as well. Clothing size is a difficult one to plan. At the beginning of April I was wearing a 26/28 size 3x or 4x. Went on pre op diet and by my surgery at the end of April I was in a 24. I am now just over 5 months out and I am in a size 14 in pants and size L in tops. I've lost 120 pounds in total so there really is no way to tell. My ultimate goal is a size 8 and a size S or M in tops. Good luck with your surgery and shopping is so much more fun now!

The 'Other' doctors and what they say...

I have to agree with most of the responses on here. Your doctor was stating what he has heard. Every person is different. Of course, I WISH I could have just lost weight on my own. I wish I would never have been morbidly obese to begin with!! For me, the surgery has been the best decision I've made.
  7. Congratulations on making goal weight! For me, as soon as the item is too big it goes in a bin. When the bin is full, I give it away.

    Tools/Items for Portion Control

I think you will find once you have surgery that it is easy to know when you are full. It is an IMMEDIATE feeling. I measured out 3 to 4 ounces. The thing is, I would get full before it was empty but would try to eat it all. I stopped doing that. I didn't want to feel obligated to eat all that was in my cup. I use the containers because I do some meal prep for the week. I have chicken and veggies for lunch or Soup. I just like that these smaller containers are a perfect fit. Plus, it helps me skip the step of measuring.

    When the Honeymoon is Over

My honeymoon period was extremely short. Yep, I gained 5 pounds the first week after surgery. For the first 3 weeks the weight came off relatively easily and with no effort...of course, I was on a liquid diet...lol! Then, I started working out 6 days a week and I hit a 3 week stall. I saw my nutritionist because I was starting to become depressed. She assured me I was doing everything right. Sure enough the next week I lost 9 pounds. Since 2 weeks after surgery I have worked out at least 5 days a week, taken my supplements, and even made sure I was eating right. It's been a struggle. People will comment that my weight is melting off. I tell them that's because I am in the gym 5 to 6 days a week! I will lose a couple pounds then stall for 3 weeks. During that 3 weeks I typically lose 3 to 5 inches though. I am on the last month of my "honeymoon" phase and since this has been my reality from the beginning I am in a good place. I don't expect too much.
  10. My husband and I went on an anniversary trip last weekend. We went to a place called Rock City. It is a beautiful rock garden tourist attraction ad there is a formation called Fat Man's squeeze. I was able to walk through it without turning sideways. 6 months ago I would not have fit. I guess that is "feeling normal" for me.

    Re: Snacks

I had a cherry coke zero obsession in my previous life. I got pregnant and gave up caffeine. Now after surgery I am committed to not having diet soda
  12. I'm in Huntsville Alabama
  13. I feel that way sometimes too. I keep stalling and I am only 5 months out. This is supposed to be my honeymoon period!! I refuse to give up. I have come too far!!

    Weight loss

I GAINED 5 pounds my first week after surgery. Please do NOT try to compare yourself to anyone else's story. This is YOUR weight loss and YOUR body. Everyone is different. Comparing yourself will make you crazy!! I compare myself to my husband to a lady I work with to others that have had the surgery. Then I saw this thing that had 8 different women that weighed the same amount. Everyone looks different. As long as your are following your plan then it is a success.

    Re: Snacks

My surgeon said no soda ever! Caffeine is an appetite enhancer and the carbonation can stretch your stomach. I was told after I reach goal weight I can have anything I want in limited quantities. Even caffeine. I am 5 months out from surgery, down 115 pounds, and 30 pounds from goal weight. I don't eat sweets very much at all because they give me a headache now. I do not really eat bread either. I may have a single bite everyone now and again but not often. It fills me up and I NEED to get that Protein in!

    Frustrated!

I am 5 months out and this is my 3rd stall. I am eating about 600 to 800 a day. I work out 5 times a week and active on weekends. I limit carbs as much as possible. I've lost 115 pounds so I know that is awesome but I am 30 pounds (40 from my doctor's goal) away from goal and want to get there. I do zumba, body pump, treadmill, and Water aerobics. I feel your frustration.

    Hungry after surgery

I did not get hungry until about 3 weeks after surgery. Then, I was like, "what is this?" Quickly realized that I was hungry. I am not 5 months out and I get famished. Like, I could bite your head off hungry. I have a few bites and then I am full again for hours. I get "bored" hungry sometimes where I am not hungry but want to eat. I fight that though. I usually get up and do something or drink some more Water. I hear about these people that never get hungry again and I sometimes think "I wish" but that's not me. I work out a lot so I guess my body is actually burning what I eat so maybe its a good thing???

What Staples Are in Your Pantry?

I am almost 5 months post op. My staples are: dannon light and fit Greek yogurt, canadian bacon, low fat mozzarella string cheese, Water, Powerade zero, salmon, shrimp, Tyson Grilled and Ready chicken breasts, steamable veggies, frozen veggies, and Soup. My typical day: Greek yogurt and 2 slices of Canadian bacon for Breakfast. I have the mozzarella cheese for a snack. Lunch is half a piece of the grilled and ready chicken along with 1/4 cup veggies. I either have some nuts or a Protein shake in the afternoon. Then dinner is usually fish, shrimp, chicken with some veggies. I have soup sometimes as well. I try not to though because when I do I usually am in danger of not getting enough protein.
  19. The Pre op diet is HORRIBLE. I was so hungry. AFterwards it hurt to swallow Water. I was not hungry for about 3 weeks or so. Some people say they don't get hungry but I definitely do. I get ravenously hungry but eat about 5 or 6 bites and it is gone.

I HATE exercising! What Should I do?!

I hate it too! I've lost over 100 pounds and I still have to make myself exercise. I did find a few things I can do that I don't HATE. I do Zumba on Monday, Body Pump on Tuesday and thursday, Aquacize on Saturdays, hit the treadmill on Wednesdays, and the row machine on Fridays. I schedule it in my planner. I have become a regular so I feel as if I need to be there. Find something that is bearable. I cannot just run on the treadmill everyday...boring! I am NOT a runner anyway. If I can't make it to the gym I just turn on some music and dance like no one is watching! I burn as many calories doing that as I do at the gym. DVDs are a great way to work out at home. There are some really good ones out there.

So it turns out my wife is gay...

I can't even imagine what you are experiencing. I have nothing to say but I hope for the best possible outcome for the both of you.
  22. My surgeon told me from day one that weight loss was not guaranteed and this was merely a tool. You have to use it as such. It does not give you license to eat whatever you want. I am only 4.5 months out from surgery but I think there is a shift once you hit your goal weight. You forget what you have been through. You forget your limitations. You really just want to feel "normal" again. I don't know.
  23. I weigh once a day in the morning. I record in my planner my weight for the day. I only record my weight in my fitness pal when there is a loss. I am about 4.5 months out from surgery and it helps me to see what (if any) differences in my diet or exercise routine do. I do sometimes get discouraged. I had a 3 week period when I did not lose one single pound (this was about a month out from surgery). I recently had about a 2 week period where I didn't lose anything. Like others, when I am not losing on the scale I check my measurements. I also post selfies on my FB page at my "goal" weights such as not being morbidly obese, 200 lbs, 195, 190, 185, and 180. My next will be 175 because that is where I am no longer obese (still overweight).

  25. I feel the same as the person above. Pee op sucked. That diet. I was trying to breastfeed and I was hungry all the time. After surgery sucked too. Wasn't as much pain as a c section though. I was walking 2 miles a day a week after surgery. The restriction is definitely a gift. I never want to lose that. I am just 3 months out but can eat pretty much whatever. I stay away from sugar and most carbs but had to add carbs in because I was working out so much. I've been sick with a cold for 3 weeks and only been working out 3 days a week vs 6 before. It's been rough but nothing to do with surgery. This is not a decision to make lightly. It is a huge change. I don't regret it though. 53 pounds til I am at goal weight!
