Are we Hungry or just more comfortable and less scared?
OutsideMatchInside posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
So as I am approaching one year, I am thinking more about my post-op life. Lately I thought my hunger has come back but with the rare exception of when I go over 12 hours without eating drinking, I am never physically hungry. Yet I think that I am increasingly hungry or at least willing to eat more and I think this has happened since 6 months. In thinking about it, at 6 months I was healed and it was like a switch was flipped and eating food was easier. I didn't have to fear that a half an ounce here or there or the moisture content of something would make me too full. Day to day the amount I could eat without getting full varied. I can easily eat 3-5 ounces of Protein with no issues, 3 of chicken or pork, 4 ounces of beef or lamb and 5 ounces of fish. So now I wonder am I really hungry or am I just less fearful about eating because I know it is unlikely I will end up uncomfortably full. So I will to eat more times a day. I rarely have head hunger because my brain and stomach still have a disconnect, my brain thinking about food doesn't make my stomach react and want food. I know post op a lot of people struggle when their hunger comes back, but I am wondering, is it really hunger or is it just comfort and adjusting to what normal life long restriction feels like as opposed to the short term restriction of healing. This also really explains the honeymoon period to me more than just some mythical time when it is easier to lose weight. The first 6 months while healing you have an artifical level of restriction and tightness. As it eases with healing so does your comfort with eating. And eating more is a positive me, as I am striving to meet protein goals which are higher than most people here. I am trying to increase my calorie goals because the days I eat more, I lose more. This is just something I have been thinking about and I wondered what other people think about comfort with your sleeve versus hunger returning. -
Post RNY and/or Sleeve: Different Daily Calories in Maintenance?
OutsideMatchInside replied to gina171's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I agree with @@Bufflehead , that is basically how it was explained to me. And yes, most people lose their malabsorption as time goes on which is why, long term, the sleeve and the bypass results end up about the same. If you are trying to pick surgeries based on the one that lets you eat the most long term, you might need to think about why you are having surgery and the kind of life changes you are willing to make. -
Increasing to 90 grams of Protein?! WTH!
OutsideMatchInside replied to JennsJourney's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@JennsJourney All the Proteins you listed are dry dense proteins. I would never eat my Protein goals eating grilled chicken, or eggs. Eggs are too dense with too little protein. Sausage, depending on the kind it is, is too high in calories and not enough protein. Turkey bacon might be a better option than sausage. So you like seafood? Fish is soft and very moist, you can eat more of it. And if you are working out, why not drink a Protein shake after you finish your workout? I also eat these protein brownies http://www.eatmeguiltfree.com/ The premade brownies don't taste as good as the ones you make yourself, but they are nice to have around. They are better than Protein Bars and more like real food. -

Increasing to 90 grams of Protein?! WTH!
OutsideMatchInside replied to JennsJourney's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was getting in 90 grams of Protein pretty easily each day at 5 months. What protein are you are you eating? If you want to keep and gain any muscles mass you need more protein or your body is just going to break down the protein you have, which is your muscles. 60 grams of protein is the bare minimum to live, and that is okay if you are slug, but not if you are active. -

Snacks for Movie Theatre Ideas?
OutsideMatchInside replied to reachbree's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I drink Water. The movies are a great place to get your water in for the day, since you are sitting there with nothing else to do. That is what I did early on. I go to the movies almost every weekend. Now I bring a Protein bar if I know I will be cutting it close on 2-3 hour eating window. If i go to the AMC that serves Brussel Sprouts, I get those. I suggest though, eating before a movie, and not getting anything at the movies except the rare special occasion. The tradition in our family was we went to dinner or brunch before a movie so we arrived at the movie full. Not only does it save money, it is just healthier overall.@@Bufflehead is right, picking snacking back up early on is probably not the best idea. -
Can I increase my protein this way?
OutsideMatchInside replied to reachbree's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
OP could just switch to Syntrax nectars which are water thin and easier to drink and solve all of this. There is more variety and while they are sweet, they are not sickenly sweet. Well not all of them. And like Kindle said, you can make them with more water so they aren't as sweet. -
Can I increase my protein this way?
OutsideMatchInside replied to reachbree's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't think there is a limit to how much protein the body can absorb, there is a limit to how much it needs for muscle repair. The rest goes into energy. http://www.quickanddirtytips.com/health-fitness/healthy-eating/know-your-nutrients/how-much-protein-can-the-body-absorb @@reachbree - I still mix some unflavored in my flavored mix. That is just personal taste. I also add a little unflavored to my yogurt. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery website says... Q: Can I take all of the protein in one dose? A: Protein should be taken in multiple doses, across multiple meals or healthy Snacks. The body cannot absorb more than approximately 30 grams at once. Also, protein is a nutrient that helps us feel fuller, longer. If we try to include Proteins in each of our meals or healthy snacks, we’re less likely to feel hungry when it’s not time to eat. https://asmbs.org/patients/life-after-bariatric-surgery My Dr made very clear that the body can only absorb so much at one time. There is a reason we take Vitamins apart, not just because some of them interact badly with each other. -

If you are on soft foods, you can have grilled or baked fish from just about any place. I wouldn't eat chicken nuggets any place except chik fil a. They have 28g of Protein and low carbs grilled or fried. The nuggets at burger King for example are 2x the calories, less protein and 2x the carbs. All food isn't equal. Check the menu and nutrition of any resturant before you go in. If it isn't a chain with that information posted then order a salad with protein and just eat the protein. -

The arm band I use for my cell phone when I am walking/running and working out now fits comfortable and doesn't slide and move like it used to because it is actually secure because my arm is smaller. I wear the same size panties I wore in HS and College but I am 40-50lbs heavier Wearing short shorts and tank tops in the 100 degree heat and still feeling cold Okay not really sure that is a victory but being 1/2 naked in the summer is a lot of fun. -
HELP! Not another weight loss program
OutsideMatchInside replied to Heatgirl03's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@Heatgirl03 A medical weight loss program can be pretty cheap. All that means is you are seeing a dietician or nutritionist and having regularly scheduled visit for weighs with a doctor. It will be covered under co-pays and help you meet your out of pocket. Where are you getting this information? Have you picked a doctor yet? The office where you are going to have surgery can best tell you what you have to do. If you have a high enough BMI a lot of these requirements are not necessary. A good Dr office can help speed the process along greatly. -

The only hot dogs I have found with macros that work are the uncured turkey hot dogs from Trader Joes. On soft foods I ate baked fish all the time. It was the only thing that had enough protein that I could eat easily and meet my protein goals and it was easy to eat, basically turns to mush in your mouth. Good luck.

Surgery jealousy? Is that a thing?
OutsideMatchInside replied to Miss.Bunny447's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@Miss.Bunny447 When you go through hard times and live events you learn who your real friends are. Your friend is probably disappointed in herself for not following through. She might not even realize it, and it is manifesting itself in this negative behavior. I think more people need to really think about the people they call friends and family and if they really love them or understand what real unconditional love is. All of my close friends (note I said close) know I had surgery and they have all been overwhelming positive and supportive and not weird about it at all. I knew they really loved me before, but their reaction to my surgery has showed me how much and in how many ways. If people don't want the best for you and can get past themselves to support you and love you, they don't really love you, not in a healthy way. This is probably only going to get worse with your friend, if it ever gets better. You haven't even had surgery yet. When you have surgery and start to really visibly lose weight, your friend is probably going to really struggle. And if you are still friends with her when you hit regular sizes, shit is really going to hit the fan. I'm not saying you should dump your friend, only you know what you can handle and what your friend means to you. However post-op is really stressful and the hormone fluctuations are real, so very real. You might not be able to deal with her when you are at like 6 weeks. Good luck. -
Is anyone required to go to therapy weekly by your surgeon?
OutsideMatchInside replied to TanairyVSG's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@gina171 I am more skeptical without more information. And people can go to therapy to work through a life event, not because they have some major issue. Going to therapy because you are grieving is not the same this as going to therapy for a behavioral issue. Recently someone posted that the hospital they selected required everyone going through bariatric surgery to undergo alcohol counseling even if they had a alcohol issue just because of the religious beliefs of the hospital. That isn't a good reason to end up in therapy. Especially when therapy costs money and more importantly time. OP, didn't state why the doctor suggested she go to weekly therapy. Some programs require everyone to do something when it really just generates income for them. Medicine in America is still a for profit business. -
