    Food Aversions-9 mos out

Things that I was lukewarm about before surgery, I really hate now. I don't like chicken, it is usually dry and hard to digest. I eat it maybe once a week, instead of almost daily. I love fish and I love it even more post-op. I didn't eat pork before but I like it now because it has a lot of flavor, very little is very satisfying and it has nice fat content. I loved steak before, and I still love it now. Are there reasons you don't like these things? Have you had them get stuck? Are they hard to digest? Do you not like cooking? You need to get to the root cause of why you don't like these things. I will admit that I get lazy and eat the same thing a lot or for several days in a row just because it is easier to log. One thing I started doing differently, was forcing myself to eat something different at each meal, so I am not just eating steak all day, or pork chops all day. I make myself have like turkey burger, steak, pork chop, steak. So even if I am eating the same things, it is different at each meal. It is too easy to just eat the same thing to just get the Protein in, especially when you aren't that attached or interested in food.

Anyone kept their procedure a secret?

@@elliekay You might as well brace yourself, your roomate that was a similiar weight to you, is probably going to blab you had surgery. Once you lose more weight and are solidly smaller than her and getting a lot of attention for it, and wearing normal sizes, she won't be able to hold it in. Likely embarrassing you in front of guys or something. So just get ready that this might happen, hopefully it doesn't and you inspire her to eat better but if she keeps lashing out... When is your lease up?

    Weight loss

I didn't lose 60 pounds until sometime during the 4th month. I still lost around 140 pounds in 12 months. The first 6 weeks post-op my Dr told me were for healing, not losing weight. Also, don't compare yourself to other people, you have no idea how they are really losing weight. There are people not meeting their Protein goals so they are losing muscle. Not getting enough calories, they are starving themselves. There are lots of people that post in one thread bragging about their weight loss and in another they post they can't get in their protein and they are still at barely 600 calories.

    Keto/VSG help please!

If you have been cutting for a while already you aren't going to see the big drop that people see on keto if they are coming from a high carb diet. Most of their initial loss is liver shrinking, and fluids. You also are already close to your bottom weight so you aren't going to drop a ton fast. What is your inch loss like? I am in a lot of Keto groups on Facebook and one thing I notice is a lot of people are losing inches and not pounds. I think people on keto diets maintain more muscle than other diets but that is just my theory and a few things I have read support it. How are you calculating your macros for keto? I use this calculator http://keto-calculator.ankerl.com/ As a WLS patient you have a huge advantage over most people doing keto. You can easily control calories and do keto. Most people on keto eventually go nuts on calories because most don't track them, they just track fat etc. Not that you have to go crazy with calorie counting with Keto, but it matters. Do you log your food? What does your typical day look like for you?
  5. I was very tried, I went to bed at 9pm every day and I was really happy to do it. The final day I felt like I was running on air, because I was. If you can just chill and try to keep your stress level low going into surgery.

Pre/Post Surgical Plans Are Not Required

I worry that surgery won't be covered by insurance in the future and will overall be viewed as ineffective because so many people are non compliant. I have watched obesity related health coverage come a really long way over the past 15 years, but that could all be easily reversed by lack luster results.

    MY SKIN

@@luvelye1101 I watched skin tight on TLC and one thing that show makes clear is no matter how you lose the weight, fast or slow, if your skin is stretched out, it is stretched out. They have people on there that took 5 years to lose their weight without surgery and their skin is still ruined. So it doesn't matter how fast or slow you lose the weight, and in that case, you might as well lose if fast and get the health benefits. I have lost about 150lbs in a year and yeah I am flabby, I still have at least another 50 pounds of fat I need to lose. Still my skin isn't just loose skin, it is filled with fat. I don't look delicious naked, but I look really good in clothes and shapewear helps a lot. I'm not married, I date. Men don't complain. Now men are calling small (so nice to live in the midwest where everyone is fat as hell). Don't let the skin concern you, after losing weight my life is enriched in so many ways the skin doesn't even matter, really.

Pre/Post Surgical Plans Are Not Required

No one here knows her medical history though. Her doctor might have told her no alcohol due to stomach ulcers or something. If the one person that actually examined you and has the education to back it up tells you something, why in the hell would you ask random strangers on the internet? If your doctor tells you something, follow their instructions, hopefully you picked them because you actually think they are a good Dr/Surgeon. It is completely maddening to watch people take such flippant attitudes toward their health and safety. At least there are some people that do still care enough to get angry, most people have completely checked out.
  9. I just finished listening to this podcast. I am going to have to listen to it again to make sure I understood it the way I thought I did. One of the things that he touched on is one of the things I have learned over the past few years trying to deal with my weight. All calories are not the same. What we eat and how it affects our bodies varies. This is one of the papers he refers to often during the talk. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4240228/ The set point and regain are really important to listen to and that is the part I want to listen to again and pay close attention to. Thank you for sharing this.

Pre/Post Surgical Plans Are Not Required

@@Djmohr I have never been a fan of all the hoops they make obese people jump through for surgery. Obesity is a disease and no one makes heart patients jump through hoops for surgery. I have always felt like it was punishing obese people and just further discrimination. As time is passing and I see more people able to speed through the process or not go through any process, I am beginning to think there is more logic to having people wait 6 months and jump through hoops. WLS is mostly mental, just like weight loss is mostly diet, not exercise. If people aren't mentally in the space to lose weight, it makes for a very hard road.

    Coffee protein drinks

Syntrax Nectar Cappuccino latte is what I had right after surgery. After 6 weeks I just made my own drinks with unflavored Protein powder and cold brew coffee concentrate.

    Clothes purge!

I am a big believer in dumping everything ASAP. It puts you in a mental place where you can't go back. I dumped all my heavy clothes gave the good stuff away, trashed the rest. I go through and purge my clothes every 5-10 pounds. I feel like the best way to move forward is to never look back.

Mourning the loss of food for comfort?

I used food as rewards. Bad day, I deserved something delicious. Good day, I deserved something delicious. I worked that issue out before surgery. I learned to walk or distract myself if I was stressed or having a bad day with work. I learned to reward myself with lipgloss instead of monster steaks. Eventually I just learned to control my emotions better by eliminating a lot stress. I don't think I could have done it post-op if I didn't work it out mentally pre-op. I spent probably 2 years before surgery working through my issues. Post-op there are way too many hormone issues I think to make those kind of changes and work through emotions just because all the emotions are so high. At least I couldn't have done it. I removed my stress factors, which I suggest for anyone. That meant cutting a lot of toxic people from my life. Now when I get stressed, work can still be frustrating, I walk or exercise and that helps me think clearer and work through my problems.

    Changes after hair loss

My friend cried off an on for months when her wavy hair went straight after having a baby. Don't worry though, that is what hot rollers are for! There is always hope.

Wendi's Chili or Panera's Tomato Basil

You can make chili at home faster than eating out. This is just a crutch excuse that people use for bad eating. I don't buy it. Every walmart, and almost every gas station and grocery store has Protein shakes. There is no reason to eat at a fast food resturant, especially less than a month from surgery, except it is an active choice. 170 calories for 15 grams of protein is a crappy choice, more than 10 calories per gram of protein.

    Changes after hair loss

I hate to break it to your but if you have curly wavy hair, your hair is just as likely if not more likely to grow back straight. So many of my curly/wavy friends end up with straight hair after having babies. A flood of hormones will change your hair texture.

@@CLN.BK Too many carbs especially early from surgery. I needed all my space for Protein, not fillers. Now that I can eat more varied things I eat green veggies and protein. That is my personal choice, I know a lot of people eat carbs and a lot of carbs from the very beginning. Just not my thing. I'm also really against the idea of eating out early on after surgery and making a habit of it. I have one person I know that had bypass that was eating Wendy's chili post-op, they never got into the habit of cooking or learning to eat properly. They still kept going out the whole time, just eating smaller amounts. Long term they have regained and can't get a handle on their food. Eating out and depending on fast food/restaurant food kind of squanders the mental reset that surgery gives you. Surgery is an opportunity to learn to eat and cook right all over like a baby, if a person dodges that chance with fast food and lost of convenience foods they are missing out on the reset option in my opinion. I have no idea why the WLS community pushes Wendy's Chili so hard, it is counter productive.
  19. My surgeon is a really good surgeon. The support staff are lack luster. The chicks in the office have bad attitudes. I wasn't pleased with the after care but it doesn't really matter. I wanted a good surgery outcome and that is what I got. The rest afterwards, you can have anyone handle. Meet him and form your own opinion.

    African American Sleevers

@@blackgirlfat Be really careful with them, they will break off at the edges and the temples, keep them oiled with like coocnut oil or something. Sisterlocks are so pretty. I'm far too lazy for them though. Wash and go is the life for me.

    Vent. Plus size stereotypes!

I think the worst thing about fat people and doctors is they blame everything wrong with you on being overweight. Like you can go with the flu and they will tell you if only you weren't morbidly obese you wouldn't have the flu, you would just a cold. Hopefully I never have to put up with that kind of drama again.

    African American Sleevers

@@blackgirlfat I'm not sure how your sisterlocks are going to hold up. My friend had them and since they are so small, they can break off at the root easily with healthy hair, when you have hair that is shedding, meh. Good luck. I wouldn't suggest anyone have braids, sewins etc right after surgery. If anything wigs are best so your hair can rest.

Clothing Sizes: What do they even mean anymore?!?!?

Clothing Sizes: What do they even mean anymore?!?!?

I tried on jackets in Sam's club today will grabbing some meat to grill this weekend. I/My family have been members at Sam's for at least 2 decades and I could never fit the clothes there, which was always disappointing because they have real deals. The size L 12/14 jackets fit me fine (buttoned nicely etc), even though my arms are large and my boobs are ridiculous. I will probably go with that size in the fall. It is nice to be able to grab a large and not have to go for the largest size possible and pray it works. I am pretty consistently a 12/14 now, so I am going to stop with the 16s and give up on juniors plus. So now I am completely out of Plus sizes in Womens and Juniors so this is a whole new world. At 223 pounds I thought I would still solidly be in plus sizes. I think before this is all over I will be a size 8 maybe? I can't even wrap my head around that.
