    Poll: NHS or Private

I must say Maincat that the tone of your reply is somewhat aggressive. I am speaking from personal experience - my mother went in to hospital last year for a cancer op and contracted MRSA. My uncle has caught it twice from having surgery and that was at a different hosptial to my mother. I know of 2 very close friends who have caught it and another 2 at my obestiy support group who have caught MRSA whilst undergoing RNY ops. Maybe now you can see why I am afraid of catching something similar from my local hospital which from my own personal experience is utterly filthy. I am in the process of writing to my local MP about this and think others should follow. I think it is very narrow minded of you to think that all of our NHS hospitals are sparkling clean!! In my opinion they should be the cleanest and most pristine places but unfortunately this is not the case.

I happen to agree with Sanks - I know of so many people who have contracted MRSA in UK hospitals. I have no choice other than to go down the NHS route as there is no way I can afford to pay for private surgery. The NHS hospital I am under is filthy. Its incredible to think that so many hospitals are in this disgusting condition. I believe its because there are no matrons any more to keep control of what goes on in their wards. Too many chiefs and not enough indians in my opinion! When I go in for my surgery I have been advised by former patients to disinfect everything with special anti-bac wipes. I know that not all of our NHS hospitals are in this awful state, but there are plenty which are.
  4. I just worked out my daily calorie intake is approximately 4000-5000. No wonder I'm the size of a house

Hello Maincat and a very Happy New Year to you. Thanks for your reply and congratulations on your great weight loss so far. On Christmas Eve I received a letter from the Luton and Dunstable Hospital offering me an appointment to see the weight loss surgery team (I am soooooo excited - this was the best Christmas present I could ever hope for!). I just hope and pray that they don't turn me down for surgery as I have my heart and mind set on losing this weight once and for all. So pleased I have found this site - so supportive and informative. Happy New Year to you all!!!

Hi everyone! I am new to this wonderful site and would love to chat to anyone who has had surgery at the Luton and Dunstable Hospital. I live in Hertfordshire and I'm hoping to have surgery on NHS in 2008. I fulfill all the criteria (BMI 40 and I suffer from sleep apnoea) so fingers crossed that they say YES! Wishing you all a very happy and peaceful Christmas!

how long on nhs waiting list

Hello Racing Snake, Hope you dont mind me messaging you. I am new to this site and also live in Hertfordshire. My GP has refered me to the Luton and Dunstable and I am waiting to hear from them. I rang the hospital last week as I hadn't heard from them and they said that as I fulfilled the criteria they would be sending me an appointment soon. As you can imagine this was such exciting news, but after reading your experience with the L and D and I now have doubts! How awful for you to attend the hospital regularly only to be told you couldn't have the surgery! Unfortunately I cannot afford to go privately, so this is my last hope of losing the weight. I'm not sure if area has anything to do with whether or not surgery is granted. I see you are from East Herts (which town are you from?). My PCT is West Herts and I come from Harpenden so I don't know if this makes any difference. I must congratulate you on your weight loss so far. You must be thrilled to have had the surgery at last. I'm just keeping all my fingers and toes crossed that I will be lucky enough to have the lap band fitted this year. Would be good to chat to you about your experience. Wishing you a very happy Christmas. Deborah
