My story began in 2013 when I was diagnosed with endometrial cancer . I needed to have a full hysterectomy but was grossly over weight. My gyneacologist informed me that I would have to lose a lot of weight before I could have a hysterectomy and she referred me to the bariatric clininc. When I attended the clinic my weight was about 189 kilograms and my bariatric surgeon told me that I did need to lose a lot of weight. He also told me that he had to apply for funding to have a stomach bypass operation, which I had not been aware of. The application form was about 24 pages long and he did apply. He did inform me that I stood a good chance of getting the funding as I had endometrial cancer but that some of his patients were refused funding which I found quite sad. Meanwhile I was put on a very low calorie diet and told to lose weight!! It took about 6 months for my funding to come through and be accepted, I felt like a ticking time bomb. However I had complied with all that they asked me to do and so they booked a date for me to have surgery on 15th September 2014. By the time I went in for my surgery I had managed to get my weight down to 167 kilograms, still very high but the surgery went ahead anyway. My surgeon informed me that the surgery had gone very well and I had wonderful after care in the hospital and recovered quite quickly. I then went back to my gyneacologist to see about having the hysterectomy, and after a CT scan and a Pet Scan due to anomolies showing up, which turned out to be harmless, I was booked to have surgery on 8th April 2015. This was 5 months after my previous surgery and they did have some concerns as I am 60 years old and my BMI was still high. By the time I went in for my hysterectomy my weight was down to 140 kilograms. I again came through that surgery very well and am recovering. My problem is that they still say that I am too overweight but I seem to have reached a plateau where my weight appears to be staying the same at 128 kilograms and I don't seem to be able to get below this weight. I just wonder if it is a temporary thing and I will lose more weight soon or if this is the weight that I am stuck at? I really don't know what is usual or if there are further changes I need to make.
I have to say that with the weight I have lost my life has improved greatly, I am able to get around a lot better, my health has improved and I feel so much better for it. I am a cheerful person by nature and love socialising, something I did not do when I was at my highest weight. I enjoy so much more now and I am so grateful for my surgery. My husband and I are even talking about going on holiday again, something I just would not do before.
