Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) or Gastric Sleeve?
BariatricBarb replied to Born in Missouri's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had the sleeve in 2015 and am now scheduled for revision due to reflux. My surgeon said they are doing revisions every day because the reflux after sleeve is such a big problem. He also said that they are now doing swallow tests before doing the sleeve. Damage in the esophagus leads to cell changes which can then cause cancer. I asked what the chances are of this not getting better and was told that there is no chance of 5he reflux getting better. The damage to the valve that goes into the stomach will not get better on its own. I've heard really good things about the RnY revision stopping the reflux immediately. I wish I'd have done this to begin with. Not sure about a procedure as new as the one above. Not enough info on long term side effects or success. Revision approved!
BariatricBarb replied to ren0318's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I just met with the surgeon today to discuss the reflux. I was sleeved in 2015 and did great initially. 5 months out and the reflux and pain started. Gall bladder removed, no help. Was unable to keep with the bariatric diet due to reflux, nausea, and vomiting. Have gained back most of the weight lost. It seems simple carbs, and never letting my stomach get empty is the way I have been surviving. Surgeon is pretty certain that revision will solve my problems. And he said this is a medical necessity and will happen sooner rather than later. They will be calling tomorrow to schedule. I'm anxious but excited. My life and health have revolved around this for so long. Keeping fingers and toes crossed. -
Sleeve to Bypass Revision
BariatricBarb replied to ashleyy_beckerr's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
It's great to rad that revising sleeve to bypass has resulted in relief from the problems after sleeve. I was sleeved in 2015 and did well initially. Four months out, the pain and heartburn started. Had gallbladder removal with little to no relief. Here we are, three years later and the pain, nausea/vomiting, and GERD are what my whole life revolves around. Saw a new surgeon today and we are going ahead with revision to bypass. I feel excitement, hope, and anxiety at the same time. I'm wondering if anyone had any complications following revision. How recovery was different from the sleeve. Any advise you can give? -

Sleeve or Bypass... help!
BariatricBarb replied to Alexandro's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Im glad I found this thread. Had the sleeve 3+ years ago. Initially lost 80 lbs. Then the pain started. Multiple ER visits before I had my gallbladder removed. Not much help. Constant nausea, pain and heartburn. Ended up back in the hospital from what they called "liver stones". Liver panels back to normal, but still constant pain, nausea, and heartburn. Rx meds prescribed, doubled, and still not much help despite adding Tums and an over the counter antacid to my max dose Protonix. I finally got to the point of wishing I had never had the Sleeve done. I've gained back everything lost. Eat mostly simple carbs and small meals throughout the day. No salad or veggie's for me as they cause pain and vomiting. I think I gave up and some of my old eating habits (sugar) are as bad as before. Just had the pH and motility studies two weeks ago. Gastro called to tell me he is referring me to surgeon. I'm apprehensive about a sleeve to bypass revision. The thought of rearranging things bothers me...quite a bit. Hoping for some wise words, encouragement, or advice. Now I'm anxious and that just makes everything worse. -
I am 7 months post op. I've done pretty well with one exception. A about 2 months ago I started getting an intense pain in the middle of my back. Before long I felt like it was wrapping around my rib cage, increasing in intensity and landing at the breast bone. Went to ER, heart checked out just fine. Surgeon ordered an ultrasound, said gallbladder needed to come out. In two weeks had that surgery. Afterward, felt great for about 6 weeks, then BAM! Same pain happens again. Back to the ER! Dosed me up with Ativan, made me drink something with lidocaine in it and home I went. 10 days later.... Here we go again.... Drove to ER and its full, turned around came home. Drank antacid. Took an Ativan and some gas x.... Feeling better for the moment..... Has anyone had anything similar happen to them? Ideas?

June 8th sleevers?
BariatricBarb replied to Hisbrowneyedgirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Sleeved June 10th. Sw 254 cw 177.2. Still learning how to "drive" this new life, but am thankful for it every day. I will be happy when the holidays are all behind and life and eating (and temptations and cravings) are behind for a little while. I told my hubby I want size 10 jeans for Valentine's Day. -
I too initially went to my first appointment with the band in mind. I have Kaiser, and the facility I went to will no longer do the band. The surgeons said they were doing more revisions than initial surgeries. So I went with VSG. I'm so happy I did. I'm almost 7 months out and down about 75 pounds. The side effects I have experienced are hair loss, gall bladder removal, and I have experienced dumping syndrome twice. But I wouldn't change a thing. My hair will grow back, gall bladder removal is common with large loss of weight regardless of how the weight was lost. And the dumping syndrome is all it's cracked up to be.... So I will not cheat with a cupcake or sliver of cheesecake. Those will never be my normal again. All in all, it's a great deterrent.... Other than that, my BMI is less than 27, I can walk for miles, uphill. I can dance with my granddaughters, run if I want to, climb fences, hike long distances, and jump rope. Other complications... I don't know how to shop for clothing. I don't know what sizes to try on, I don't know what my style is other than putting it on and hoping it hangs right to cover the rolls.... But the high heeled boots I got for Christmas are a good start! It's also much less expensive to go on date night with the hubby. Hot tea at dinner is considerably less expensive than the good Chardonnay. And a shrimp appetizer becomes your whole dinner. Not a day goes by that I don't celebrate having done this. I would recommend it to anyone who isn't afraid of a little hard work, commitment, and determination.

Yay! My hair is growing back!
BariatricBarb replied to Mrs. Reid's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm afraid to do anything with my hair...blow dry, curl, color... Hands full just from shampooing! I'm about 6 1/2 months out. When does this stop? -
I'm 5 months post op and ended up in ER the other night for severe upper right abdominal pain. Got the call from my surgeon today confirming lots of stones and sludge. Surgery in 2 weeks.

Really, really scared about surgery
BariatricBarb replied to sonnysun's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Negative thoughts worm their way through our minds and it's tough to get past. The thing is that obesity is more likely to cause more problems, possibly life-threatening diseases and problems that could take you from your children than the surgery is. I'm in my late 40s, and my only regret is that I didn't have this surgery when I was younger. Before the blood pressure problems, before gynecological problems that could only be corrected by hysterectomy. Before the degeneration of discs in my back that resulted in spinal surgery. Before the knee problems, hip problems, and sleep apnea... My point is that this surgery isn't selfish. And canceling it makes future health problems and surgeries more likely. Do this to have a great life with your children when they are growing up. You won't be sorry. -
During surgery, they have you on oxygen. This is through a mask or a nasal cannula. Both administer oxygen in the same way that your Cpap works. Thus, it keeps your airway open in the same way. You are told to bring it to the hospital to use during your stay. BTW, I am a little more than 3 months out, and haven't used my Cpap in about 2 months. My doc is scheduling another sleep study, but believe the apnea has resolved with my weight loss.

Northern California Sleevers?
BariatricBarb replied to LOVE4JEH's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
. Yea it should go pretty fast after that. It was orientation meet with surgeon psych eval case manager Liz lol and she gives you your date my psych eval was the longest wait because he is part time so he was booked .. Hi Ladies! I had my surgery 6/10 with Dr. Im . Everything went great with the surgery and in the hospital afterwards. I thought the nurses on the floor were great. Dr. Im talks to you like you're his only patient. I was very happy with my whole experience. Next week is my 3 month group follow up and down about 45lbs since surgery, 65 since my first orientation. My first meeting with the psych didn't go all that well. He refused to clear me the first time because he said I wasn't ready. The thing about that is that he was right. I got so pissed off that I eWent home and said just forget it! I had Mexican food for dinner and chocolate chunk brownies that night... Well, the guilt I woke up with the next morning was fierce, and I realized that it was something I really wanted to do. Stayed on plan and went back a month later. He cleared me and I had surgery within 3 weeks. He can seem a little abrasive at times, but for me, it was exactly what I needed. -
Like why is easy for others and so hard for me
BariatricBarb replied to robertweisman's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had surgery June 10. I initially lost about 2 lbs every couple of days, then it just stopped. Everyone says use the My Fitness Pal Ap. I started that and realized I was only getting about 1/3 of my daily protein, and probably 1/2 of the water I needed. Found some ways to correct that and am back on the losing side, 5lbs this week! Protein makes a HUGE difference because that's what makes your body burn fat. I also feel much better and have a more positive outlook. Good luck!
