You were one of the lucky 50%. I had RNY, lost all excess weight, follow diabetic food plan, lift weights and do cardio and I am one of the unlucky 25% whose diabetes never went into remission. If I could do it over I would have DS.

1 year & 5 months post-op
MaryCatherine replied to Heybrendacleo's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Your post has the wrong year. You are now out of the honeymoon period and will have to work very hard to lose more weight. Going to a gym will help you feel better, but only cutting calories will take the pounds off. Get a kitchen scale and weigh every bite of food and track it in my Fitness Pal. You can lose the weight, but be assured you will need to cut way back on calories to do it. -
With your diabetes, DS would be the best chance of going into remission. Diabetes is never cured. Chance of remission: DS - 97% RNY - 75% Sleeve - 50% It will be harder to find a surgeon who does DS, you might have to travel for your surgery, but the chance of getting and staying in remission will be worth it.

Citrucel is the only one that does not cause stomach gurgling and excess gas. It costs more but is so worth it.

Hates scale......wants to throw it out the window
MaryCatherine replied to Mindy78's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Throw that stupid scale away and invest in a really smart scale. I use Garmin Index scale and it sends data to my computer. I have graphs of my weight, BMI, fat content, muscle mass, Water weight and bone weight. If I gain weight I can tell immediately if it is water, fat or muscle that went up. Please do this for yourself. What you are doing now is like driving a car with a broken speedometer and no mileage indicator. You never know how fast you are going or how far you have done. It will make your journey so much easier. Always weigh yourself everyday but use a scale that is correct. Putting the scale in the closet is what helped me gain enough weight to need weight loss surgery. I never want to live in denial again. -
There is no food that I can't eat now. Food funerals are kind of silly because people can go back to eating everything they did before surgery, just in much smaller servings.

Anyone over 60 years?
MaryCatherine replied to onega128's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
It is reasonable to expect to live to 100 if a person is in good health. Tell her she can have 36 years of being slim if she gets the surgery. -
People don't throw up or feel full on slider foods. Soups, noodles and yogurt are slider foods and you actually could eat an unlimited amount of those. They go through to the intestines like pouring Water through a funnel. When the nerves in your stomach heal and you start eating dense Protein you will feel restriction. It is very easy to out eat your surgery. The more food you eat, the slower you will lose. Concentrate on eating less, rather than more food.

Honest truth about genepro protein powder
MaryCatherine replied to PittsburghRNYgirl9814's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
The honest truth is that GENEPRO is a scam. There are 15 grams in a tablespoon. A tablespoon cannot contain 30 grams of Protein any more than one cup can hold two cups of Water. Genepro is sold to bariatric patients. Bariatric patients don't know any better. There is no regulation of protein or any other supplements. They are making lots of money by lying about their product and selling it to people who are naïve enough to believe. -
I am only lifting for some strength and definination. I would rather lift weights than have plastic surgery for sagging body parts. I found that the free website http://www.iifym.com gives me great macro breakdowns and calorie goals.

What could you not have lived without?
MaryCatherine replied to ramsmommy's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Thank you I do have a waterproof mattress topper since my mattress is under warranty lolMy shower has built in seats but I hadn't thought of a walker. When did you have your surgery? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App I had mine in 2008. I had tummy tuck with muscle tightening. I was sore for about a week. Best thing to do is rest as much as possible until the drains are out. I had no swelling post op but many people do. The best place for information is a website http://www.makemeheal.com -

What sport or competition is for me? I need suggestions
MaryCatherine replied to mi75's topic in Fitness & Exercise
I would advise you to start with Water aerobics. You can get a great workout without stressing your knees and ankles. Water weights are made of foam and provides lots of resistance. Get into a class so you need to be there at a specific time. Just going to the gym when you feel motivated ends up being never there. You will want a comfortable swimsuit and drainable water shoes. The shoes will support your leg, knees and ankles and make being injured much less likely. It is not competitive but a good instructor will have lots of routines to keep things interesting. http://www.zappos.com/columbia-drainmaker-iii-oyster-tango-pink -
How do you know what weight you should be?
MaryCatherine replied to alwtg's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Did you read a study that said 20? I know most people do "rebound" but I would love to see studies that show numbers. Mine was only 5-7. Just the average my surgeon quotes. Some gain a lot more, some a lot less. Mine was 12 -
Weight gain at 9 weeks out! HELP!
MaryCatherine replied to Llamalover17's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I bought a Garmin Index scale. It measures weight, BMI, Water, fat, muscle and bone. I have used it for nine months and have enough readings to look at the graphs and see if I am holding water, gaining muscle, or increasing in fat. I no longer torture myself wondering what is causing a difference on the scale. I highly recommend getting a smart scale and knowing what has changed. -

I got down to size zero jeans and bounced back to size 4. I did not invest a lot in clothes until year three. -
How do you know what weight you should be?
MaryCatherine replied to alwtg's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The top of normal BMI at 5'4" is 151 pounds. At about two years out, there is a rebound of about 20 pounds. So to stay at normal BMI you would want to lose another 20 pounds and be too skinny for the next year. Many people are too skinny during the second year after weight loss surgery. It is almost impossible to find someone who is still too skinny in their third year. -
I think the scale is going to be the death of me!
MaryCatherine replied to bgjon5's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
In January of this year I bought a Garmin Index scale. It tells weight, BMI, fat percentage , Water percentage, muscle weight and bone weight. It downloads to my PC and my cellphone using Bluetooth. Now I have eight months of daily data. I have gained six pounds, but know that four of those pounds are muscle and one pound is water. I am cutting calories to lose those pounds, but will be sure that I am losing fat and not muscle or bone. I accomplish that by lots of weight lifting and other working out. I had surgery to lose weight and ignoring the scale always results in regain for me. I would advise anyone who has weight loss surgery to get a smart scale and follow all of their body changes. -
But you could be the unlucky one who gets turned down because you lost down to BMI of 39. Don't take that chance. Keep your BMI at 40 or higher until you get approved. Insurance companies are staffed by human beings. They want to save money not spend it. Don't risk it.

Still stalled - and hungry. Where's the magic weight loss i was promised?
MaryCatherine replied to Seastars's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Actually, it depends on your starting weight and your ideal weight. I anticipate that it will take me two or more years. I am over a year post-surgery and over half way to goal. I agree with you and you are doing a wonderful job. -
Still stalled - and hungry. Where's the magic weight loss i was promised?
MaryCatherine replied to Seastars's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
It takes about a year to get to your ideal weight. Weight loss surgery magic is not about losing faster than a regular diet. The magic is that you now have a tool that will make it possible to keep the weight off for as long as you are willing to work with that tool. -
Between a rock and a hard place
MaryCatherine replied to 111's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Work needs to come first and asking for time off during an interview is going to make it very hard to get hired. Get the surgery as soon as possible and then go job hunting when you are healed. Hopefully you will get unemployment and be able to tide yourself over. Contact your cardiologist and surgeon and let them know they need to rush this. -
For the Re-Gainers who have LOST, please share HOW you lost it again
MaryCatherine replied to mi75's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I will be nine years out from RNY next month. I have had regains and lost it several times. Calories count - to lose a pound a week I must eliminate 500 calories a day I weigh every single day I take my Vitamins and drink my Water I log every bite in My Fitness Pal My goal is 136. I maintain at 1400 calories a day and lose at 900 calories a day. I have tried every single gimmick out there and only restricting calories has ever worked to lose the weight.
