It absolutely makes NO freaking sense to me... **MY RANT**
MaryCatherine replied to LipstickLady's topic in Rants & Raves
If you were teaching a class and gave a test, would every student get 100%? People have different levels of intelligence and dedication. Some will be weight loss surgery superstars, some will be total failures, and most will be a degree of average. -
Questions to the ones who Had GASTRIC BYPASS!
MaryCatherine replied to Missbeauty16's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
At nine years out, I have only been hungry once. I was busy and went about 10 hours with no eating and was vey hungry. I make sure I have about a 200 calorie snack three times a day in addition to three meals of about 300 calories each. Eating simple carbs can also cause hunger to RNY'ers. Do not eat anything with sugar, flour, bread, rice, potatoes, Pasta or Cereal and you may never be hungry again. All you need is Protein, Water and non-starchy vegetables. -
When does the rapid weight loss generally drop off?
MaryCatherine replied to Evenkeel's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Seven pounds in a week at 3-1/2 months out and at your weight would concern me. I hope it is all OK, but about 2 pounds a week or less would be my expectation for you now. -
My surgeon says if you can't wait until you get home from the hospital, to please lock the door.

Many years ago a friend snuck away for a face to face meetup with her online lover. Their anal resulted in her washing the sheets in the hotel bathtub.

Probably has to do with muscle tone and fat distribution.

I think we are going to relate to Katy Mixon in American Housewife that starts tonight. About being overweight in a neighborhood with neighbors who have perfect bodies.

New members know that they can google questions, but they are looking for advice from an experienced person. They are looking for the experts, not just random answers. When you are burned out on answering questions, it is time to take a break and let others do the answering. What attracts people to a board is the ability to interact. When everyone quits interacting and simply points to the search bar, then the board will cease to exist.

I use my weight from the first appointment with the weight loss surgeon. Everyone decides which weight they want to use.

The day you weighed the most. Without surgery you will return to it.

Is it possible to be fatter now than preop?
MaryCatherine replied to G8rgrl72's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I gained 19 pounds on the day of surgery. My surgeon laughed and told me to go home and pee it out. It was gone after a week. -
How much weight is too much? Do I have a problem? Is this normal?
MaryCatherine replied to Heather1369's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Rosey Posey, I know you looked great at 14 and 150 if you were 5'10" then. 181 would be perfect goal weight now and put you at 24.9 BMI - one point under being overweight. -
How much weight is too much? Do I have a problem? Is this normal?
MaryCatherine replied to Heather1369's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
The desirable rule for women is 100 pounds for the first five feet of height and five pounds for each inch over. So 110 is perfect for you. -
We call that the foamies. It is from eating too much, too fast and not chewing each bite down to mush. Dumping is when you eat too much sugar and it dumps into the intestines too quickly. Your food never got to the intestines so did not dump into them.

I would fill the tumbler with crushed ice and crystal light so it looks like a Slurpee. Then I would get an empty Twinkies box and carry it in the house each night. Tell her you are so glad you took the easy way out because dieting was too hard.

Pictures... I can't believe I look like that.
MaryCatherine replied to achappex3's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Delete that picture and any copies of it. Take a before picture that is flattering wearing something you feel good in. Everyone has had a lousy picture taken. You don't have to keep it and be reminded of it. -
Pre op diet questions since reading my book last night
MaryCatherine replied to LifeRejuvenated's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
All good advice. I would also say to wean off of caffeine now and stop eating white carbs like flour, sugar, bread, rice, potatoes, Cereal and Pasta. This way you don't have to go through withdrawal with the pre-op and post-op plans. -
Worried about maintenance
MaryCatherine replied to ReneK's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
By three years the body recovers from the surgery and learns how to absorb calories and gain weight again. Nobody disappears, but many people find their lost weight again. A good goal is to try to be 10 or 20 or 30 pounds under your lifetime goal, because rebound is usually about 20 pounds. -
Worried about maintenance
MaryCatherine replied to ReneK's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't start maintenance until you are about three years out from surgery. Until then do what you have been doing. Give your body time to adjust to being smaller. The reason people gain their weight back is because they think they have been cured and can go back to eating what they did before. And that will work for a while, then they start regaining after the second year. Accept the fact that you can never go back to eating like before unless you want to weigh what you weighed before. I have been on a diet for nine years. If I go off that diet I will start gaining. As long as I weigh my food, track my eating and keep my calories at the right amount, I stay at my goal. -
You are doing great. Expect to lose 10 pounds a month for the next five months and then five pounds a month after that until you hit your goal about October 1, 2017. Weight loss is not faster after surgery. The difference is that you will have a tool now that will help you to keep the weight off as long as you work the tool. A year from now it will not matter what you weighed on any particular day during the journey. It will just matter that the weight is gone.

Can we please talk about Starvation Mode for a minute?
MaryCatherine replied to DeletedMember's topic in Rants & Raves
I have spent my whole life looking for variables and exceptions. I finally realized that it is simple. Calories in minus calories burned equal weight. The only exception is that after the quick extreme loss from surgery, our bodies are more efficient at holding on to their calories. -
Can we please talk about Starvation Mode for a minute?
MaryCatherine replied to DeletedMember's topic in Rants & Raves
You will be stuck eating 800 calories a day to lose weight and 10X your weight to maintain. So to maintain 150 pounds you will eat 1500 calories a day. I have searched and searched for another way but it always comes down to eating less calories to weigh less. -
Gastric bypass causes your body to not absorb all of the calories in the food that is eaten. Your colon has like finger-like appendages called villi that grab food and hold it against the wall of the intestine until it can be absorbed. When a portion of the intestines is bypassed, then calories do not get absorbed. It takes the body about two years to grow enough new villi so that all of the calories in food can be absorbed again. Then an average of 20 pounds is gained during the third year after surgery. To stop the weight loss you have to eat less calories. The honeymoon is over and there is no more free ride. There is no pouch reset. Everything you eat will get absorbed now. Two years is where counting calories and following a diet is the only way to stop regain. Many people regain half of the lost weight by year five. Some regain all of it. Start fighting it now, it will not stop on its own.

I was taking Benefiber and had terrible diarreha problems. My weight loss surgeon referred me to a gastroenterologist. That is a doctor who specializes in problems with the intestines and colon. He told me that RNY itself can cause the runny stools. He said the best solution was adding more Fiber to soak up the liquids. He said that Benefiber uses a thickener called wheat dextrin and that is why it causes gas and bloating. Fiber supplements with psyllium are meant to treat constipation not diarrhea. Only the methylcellulose fiber in Citrucel will keep you regular without causing gas, bloating and diarrhea. I spent years in misery before I found what works for me.
