Hair by the strands
MaryCatherine replied to spoiledguti86.'s topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is completely normal between months 3 and 9. The hair follicles go to sleep during surgery and take three months to fall out. You will not go bald but many people get a short layered cut so it blends in better. It will grow back. -
Heavily considering balloon...but is it worth it? Why not just get a tummy tuck and/or lipo?
MaryCatherine replied to DHurd35's topic in Gastric Balloon Forum
Feeling better about your appearance will make traditional dieting easier. The balloon does not seem like a good thing if it causes nausea. My plastic surgeon wants patients at a weight where they never intend to gain or lose more than ten pounds. Following an Atkins diet to get the weight down quickly and then scheduling surgery before regain, might be a great strategy. -
This could be a kidney function problem. Do not increase Protein without bloodwork to find out if your kidneys are being damaged from too much protein.

Can we use an air fryer?
MaryCatherine replied to DebiW's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I believe in using anything that keeps the calories down and lets you enjoy your food. If you get the air fryer let us know how you like the food. -
Interested to hear vets' opinions on this

If a WLS patient read nothing else but this article, they would have all the knowledge needed to be successful. -
Odd sense of calm/confidence?
MaryCatherine replied to henryXyorkshire's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I went in with the same confidence and still trust my surgery to keep me at goal nine years later. People who are successful need that permanent attitude change. -
O really? Yani The sugar in the soda don't make you dump? Yani Have you put any weight back on from drinking it? Yani I only drink diet soda and it did not cause weight gain.

Surgery wait for self-payers?
MaryCatherine replied to MerryHearted's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
ir just depends on how busy the surgeon is. Many companies that used to cover weight loss surgery no longer do as a cost savings for the company. Always check your policy by calling the number on back of your insurance card. -
i never let it go flat and just like to drink soda. I never have any unpleasant feeling from drinking it. I started at three months out from surgery.

Most people are low on Vitamin D whether or not they are obese. Most do not spend enough time outdoors in sunlight so need supplements to not be low.

The doctor says ginger ale is OK because it has no caffeine. I will drink diet ginger ale sometimes. Water is much better for me.

hair loss starts at about three months out and ends at about nine months out. I used Biotin. It did not stop the hair loss on my head but my legs needed to be shaved twice a day and I grew a great amount of facial hair. I did not like the beard and moustache look on a woman and had to have facial waxings done. When I quit the biotin the leg and face hair growth stopped.

Weight Gain After Surgery
MaryCatherine replied to mfoxworthy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No worries. I had a nurse who weighed me right before surgery. After surgery she had me get out of bed and had me walk to the scale. It was up nineteen pounds. I asked my surgeon what was going on and he laughed and said to go home and pee it out. It is Water that they pump into the body to do the laparoscopic surgery. A galleon of water weighs seven pounds. They used about three gallons for you. It will go away in a few days. -
Good or Bad Idea ?
MaryCatherine replied to BariatricGal's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Very bad idea. Patches are not recommended by ASMBS. They may be causing toxic levels of Vitamins. They definitely do not contain what is on their label. Do some research and talk to your surgeon before using them. http://www.unjury.com/blog/important-information-if-you-are-recommending-a-patch-vitamin/ -

Help I went in for my initial consultation and wanted the Gastric Sleeve the doctor suggested the Duodenal switch surgery
MaryCatherine replied to BigJohn58's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
From what I understand once you have a DS you will have diarrhea if you eat any carbs. They malabsorb fat for life. With RNY malabsorption pretty much is gone by two years. I had RNY and worried about my intestines being rerouted. When I woke up from surgery I realized that I never knew how my intestines were arranged before and did not feel any different. But even the sleeve results in problems with diarrhea, constipation and flatulence. -
Help I went in for my initial consultation and wanted the Gastric Sleeve the doctor suggested the Duodenal switch surgery
MaryCatherine replied to BigJohn58's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
If you were 28, I would say get the sleeve and get another surgery in five years. At 58 you need to get the surgery that will do the most for you. You don't have years to waste. -
How do you get out of a stall?
MaryCatherine replied to ZoeGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
More exercise, more Water, fewer calories. The first eighteen months is when it is easy to lose a lot of weight. This gets a lot harder. Weigh your food and track every bite in My Fitness Pal. Get your calories lower. Weight yourself everyday. Eat only meat. eggs, cheese and a few non-starchy vegetables. Do not eat anything made with flour or sugar. No bread, Cereal, rice, Pasta, noodles, potatoes, peas or corn. No cake, pies, Cookies, candy or ice cream. Do this and the weight will fall off. Don't listen and your surgery WILL fail. -

When are you going to stop losing weight?
MaryCatherine replied to BrittneyMarie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I told them that I had weight loss surgery and when the body recovers from the surgery it goes into a period called bounceback. During that time, it will be normal for me to regain twenty or more pounds. So I am working on losing an extra twenty pounds so I will be at a normal weight after the bounceback period ends. At 30 months ou.t I regained 18 pounds. The comments stopped being about too skinny and people started saying I needed to lose a bit more. -

Cheated 5 days after my sleeve
MaryCatherine replied to jenniferbook902's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
A lady from my surgery center had RNY in November. A few weeks later her school had a Christmas Party. She was the principal at the school. She decided to indulge in some pizza and chicken. She went upstairs to her office to use her restroom. When she did not return someone went to check on her. She was passed out on the restroom floor and bleeding from her rectum. They took her to the hospital by ambulance. At midnight, her family was called to her bedside for a chance to say their final goodbyes. In surgery, they managed to repair her leaking pouch and intestine tears. She spent two weeks in the hospital. She recovered and learned a frightening lesson about putting food into a healing system. -
Insurance paying for vitamins and protien shakes
MaryCatherine replied to newjerseygirl60's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Actually it is an insurance scam. The company bills your insurance $1000 a month for a scar cream and then they just take some of the $1000 and use it to send you Protein and Vitamins. They put about $900 a month into their pocket. Some insurance companies have caught on. -
I used a binder for a month after RNY surgery and it gave me a lot of support for my back while healing. Hospitals used to always give a binder with any abdominal surgery. They no longer do in order to save money. I got mine from a medical supply store and they charged it to my insurance.
