Mourning the loss of 'Favorites'?
MaryCatherine replied to customademe's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
You can just eat a sliver of a Whopper now, but in a few months you will have no trouble getting a whole Whopper down. Your pouch will grow and you will be able to eat a lot. Because your body will malabsorb food, you will still lose weight and not have a regain problem until year three. The real test of weight loss surgery is keeping the weight off after year three. If you don't learn to eat differently now, you will regain at least half of the lost weight by year five. -
Gerd/Gord and weight loss surgery
MaryCatherine replied to morbidobesity's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
GERD is manageable when you have a stomach larger than the size of a two-liter bottle of soda. When you sleeve that stomach to smaller than a magic marker, the same acid is in a much smaller system, high pressure system and much harder to manage. The sleeve retains the pyloric valve so the acid is trapped in a very tight system. With RNY there is a tiny stomach, but the pyloric valve is bypassed and acid can escape into the intestines. That is why sleeve is not advised for patients with GERD and why patients who develop GERD after the sleeve are converted to RNY. -
my nutritionist wants me to have 60 grams a day ! i get in maybe 20? i just can't seem to acquire a taste for any that i've tried. they literally make me sick. i'm only a week out, so right now, Water and broth are my go to's. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App really ? when i looked it up, it said that my body absorbs it fully. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App They are lying to see their product. We do not absorb collagen and it will not help you keep your protein levels up after surgery.

Before you give up on Protein shakes, try BSN Lean Desssert or BSN Syntra-6. When I open a container of protein powder and smell it, they smell like spoiled milk. BSN smells like cake mix. It does not spell disgusting and does not make me sick.

They are made from Collagen, a Protein that the human body does not absorb. An expensive waste of money.

What did you all do to drop so many sizes in so little time as in months?
MaryCatherine replied to Missbeauty16's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
If you don't exercise, you will still lose weight but look flabbier. Building muscle helps fill in the loose skin look when the fat is gone. -
Pre-Op steps, not sure if doing the right thing.
MaryCatherine replied to TexasguyEP's topic in Pre-op Diets and Questions
For my six month pre-op diet, I gave up the "white trash". No flour, sugar, potatoes, bread, rice, noodles, Pasta, Cookies, candy, pie, cake or cereals. I ate dense Protein and non-starchy vegetables. I also quit diet soda and increased Water. After surgery there was no withdrawal or cravings. The purpose of the six month diet is to prepare for a new way of eating. -
Who knows about your surgery?
MaryCatherine replied to jessgnc's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
One of two things will happen. You lose all the weight and people think you had surgery or they think you have a disease like cancer You get bored with surgery, eat the wrong foods and don't lose. Everyone knew I had surgery and was wondering if I would gain all the weight back. It keeps me on my food plan, even nine years later. -
Hip pain at night
MaryCatherine replied to cseidman's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I had numbness and pain in my left thigh after surgery. I woke up with the pain. The surgeon thinks it is from the way I was positioned on the table during the surgery. After months of pain, I tried a tube of capsaicin cream. It stopped the pain after two days. -
I would not. It is a lot of carbs and will slow down your weight loss. Concentrate on Protein and non-starchy vegetables.

How does everyone deal with the social pressure to eat while eating out?
MaryCatherine replied to Travelher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
The people who own and work in restaurants are there to make money. They don’t appreciate people who take up their seats and their time and don’t spend enough money. They would rather have someone order a $40.00 meal and leave an $8.00 tip than someone who orders a $3.00 bowl of Soup and leaves a fifty cent tip. They don’t care that you can’t eat more. When I go to a restaurant, I order a full meal and a takeout box. I tip generously. I usually have enough leftovers for three more meals, but I don’t make the business owner and waitstaff suffer because of my inability to control my eating without surgery. -
My plan was three months

You are getting dehydrated. Keep Water next to the bed and drink when you wake up. The surgery can cause dehydration very quickly, especially during the first month. Many people end up in the ER having Fluid pumped into them. Drink more during the day and drink as soon as you wake up with dry mouth.

When does your brain catch up.
MaryCatherine replied to Mindy78's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When your brain sees your face it fills in the body that it associates with that face. To see what your body looks like you need to look at a picture that does not show your head from the neck up. -
I have no problem. I drink and enjoy diet sodas.

Feel like such a failure...
MaryCatherine replied to Unhappysleever's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
99.9% of us have regain. Taking off 100 pounds is easier than taking off 20 pounds of rebound. It all comes down to counting calories after the honeymoon of easy weight loss right after surgery. -

Weight Gain In The hospital.
MaryCatherine replied to Redmaxx's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
They pump Water into you so that they can see better when doing the laparoscopic surgery. Twenty pounds is not unusual. It takes about a week to pee it back out. -
Actually eating too much Protein causes the constipation. Because we are on high protein diet we need laxatives, stool softeners, sometimes suppositories and enemas. Keep eating high protein but add something to counteract the constipation.
-
Most of us need laxatives after surgery to keep from having a bowel obstruction. Four days is not normal.

What is the one food you cannot eat since bypass?
MaryCatherine replied to melliecat's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Absolutely no food that I cannot eat now.
