When was the first time you weighed this much and when was the last?
skinnyrita replied to Cape Crooner's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am 6 months out from VSG and now weigh 164 lbs. it's been over 20 years since i was at this weight. As a yo yo dieter, I got down to 170 a couple of times, but this is a pretty dramatic change for me! I'm only 15 lbs from goal???????????? -

Probiotics are the natural gut- intestinal flora that are part of your immune system. I would say that although yogurt is good, it.s not the best source of probiotics due to inadequate live cultures. If you do get approval to take one, there are many options but as with anything , you get what you pay for. I like Dr Ohiras and also Pearl Elite. Since we VSG patients have had essentially cut out part of our stomachs thru surgery, we need to replenish and maintain these essential " good" bacteria thru supplementation. They do seem to help with digestion / elimination and since I work in a medical clinic, protection from illnesses. -
I have the yummly app and use it frequently because it gives great alternative recipes for my favorite foods AND a nutrition breakdown! Also my fav website is " TheWorldaccordingtoeggface has fantastic healthier low carb versions of things lehich normally would not have a place in my diet. Her ricotta pancakes are the bomb!!

Starting out at age 45? How common?
skinnyrita replied to KS123's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi Madmax68, I'm so excited for your sister. Yes it's a little pain up front and lots of adjustment to the sleeve, but I wouldn't go back to my old weight for anything. Joint pain is a thing of the past. Wishing her and you the best????Let us hear from you both! -
Today went to cardiologist who hasn't seen me since the VSG surgery in May 2015. After her mouth dropped open at my weight loss, she said you are the picture of health because your blood pressure is normal 120/88, your pulse is ridiculous at 53 bpm, your EKG is normal and she thinks I also look fabulous! ????no meds necessary- see me in a year for a check up. Now how does it get any better than that? She also added that because my blood pressure was very high and uncontrolled at the last visit with me back in April ( before surgery)she honestly thought I was headed for a stroke or major heart attack. She was the one who suggested the surgery and I gave her a big hug today for saving my life????I'm celebrating with a swim tonight.

No Wonder I Wasn’t Skinny!
skinnyrita replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My mother and her mother lived through the depression years and they were Amazing Cooks. My grandmother canned fresh vegetables from her garden and fruit trees to get through the winters. Red beans and corn bread, turnip greens, fried chicken, potatoes, and there was always dessert. Cobbler, cake or cookies and bread. I wasn't that interested in cooking, until I was in my 40s and became obsessed with different cuisines, especially Italian food. That's when my weight became an issue and my health started to decline. High blood pressure, joint pain and other mobility issues came into the picture. I was blessed to have good, mostly healthy foods in my childhood and I have great memories of helping my mom and grandmother in the kitchen. I still feel close to them even thoughI'm preparing much more sensible meals now.???????????? -

Just sleeved at age 61. Sure older people may lose a little slower but we still lose???? -
This is a real victory in your life! What a week. Who would've known you can make it without resorting to food, unless you were tested? So sad about the horse???? though.

My doc has me off all Ibuprofen and other NSAIDs and many WLS patients are told not to take them due to the potential to ulcerate the stomach lining. I had a shoulder problem and got permission to take them for a couple of weeks, but it's not allowed routinely. There may be other things you can do- have you asked your doc for a referral to physical therapy? Maybe they can help you build up strength?be sure to let your WLS doc know about your hips and joints.????

Proud of you!!! Way to go!

My doc waited 2 months to pull me off BP meds, after losing about 25 lbs. since then I have been monitoring my BP and it usually runs in the 110/88 range. If you can keep a log of daily BPs and when you see a downward trend talk to your doc. Congrats on the surgery! -
I'm fairly new here but wonder what or if others are exercising, what you are doing, how often and does it work for you? Is it difficult to maintain? I have been a swimmer since surgery , May 2015. It is helping me achieve my weight loss goals. Here in Texas, it's still in the 90s and I have been able to keep swimming so far. I'm nervous about when it gets too cold to swim. Anybody else doubting their ability to keep up their exercise goals? Pleas share and be kind????????????

If you are weight training and doing interval training you are way more efficient at calorie burning than most, so 1335 might not be your number. You might really need those extra calories to maintain weight. Don't go by formula go by what works for you. You might need 2000 cals a day if you're hitting the gym hard. Tell us what you're doing, and best of luck????

Bbrookmedic I hope you can find some exercise you can tolerate. The water has been a lifesaver for me as I have foot and knee problems. If it's any help, I listen to Dr. Rob Maki's podcast, who seems to have the latest and best science on weight loss. He said you can still lose weight even if the exercise isn't perfect. As you lose weight more movement should be comfortable????. Let us know how you're doing.

How invested are you in the idea of healthy weight loss?

Thanks for your perspective! I think we all bring different experiences which are valuable. Our collective approaches offer options of what works. We should endeavor to bring personal experience from which the viewer or participant can gain ideas. You are a great asset to you support group????thanks for sharing! -
How invested are you in the idea of healthy weight loss?
skinnyrita posted a topic in Food and Nutrition
I've been on this site for about 5 months since having VSG in May 2015. I'm glad to say that I'm almost at goal but I have also been trying to make sure the food decisions I make are the most health conscious ones, trying to eliminate processed foods, GMOs, sugar and beginning to really notice a difference in the way I feel and think. Sometimes I seriously am concerned about the recommendations given by individual members which don't seem to have any consideration of the health factor, most are about the same type of approach that has failed in the past for many of us. One of the challenges of having this mindset is that some members on this site feels very " married" to their approach, especially if it seems to be " working." If I say anything remote,y controversial as far as my opinion, some very subtle and not so subtle comments are generally posted shortly thereafter. Is this really support? Do others feel that they get shot down when they ask a question? Do some here feel entitled to " inform" newcomers about the " best" way to take care of a problem, for instance, a stall? I've had both good and bad experiences here on BP, but I love having the forum and that is why I am inquiring. Has anybody out there felt that they couldn't say what they wanted to say because it would be attacked by the more Senior members, pertaining to beliefs about health and weight loss? Please share your experiences. -

I think it's easy to read into what a given poster means, without the context we usually rely on in person, such as facial expression, tone of voice, body language. It's hard to know the intent of the person behind the words. I hope I don't come across as trying to be a know it all. Sure I know some things about my own nutrition and how to arrive at a goal for myself but that might not work across the board. I dislike personal attacks, but it doesn't destroy me if someone disagrees with me either. No two people lose weight in the same way. Personally I don't think it's important that we all agree on weight loss techniques. I DO think it matters how we talk to one another whether online or in person. I'm not the antichrist if I believe bread is bad on a diet ( and I do for me) and I don't care if you're cheating on your plan - that's your business. I don't feel the need to be unkind towards anyone in order to feel superior or have the last word. Some folks seem to get off on that, in my experience. Present company excepted. -
