8 weeks since surgery and I think I am flunking this test!
Shustar replied to erenee's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Marcy0912, thank you for yout thoughtful post. It is so hard for a spouse/friend/family member to support an overweight person. We all got to be fat for different reasons but we are all united that for our health andhappiness, the solutions are not easy. As a gal 2.5 weeks out, I marvel at those who are eating real food already. My Dr would have a heart attack. That being said, these are so many different approaches to this surgery. If you just look at pre-surgery diets...wow! Just help your dear hubby with what his Dr suggests and you'll be great! Good luck to you both! -
I am going back to playing tennis on Monday which is my 3 week anniversary. Dr. said I could resume playing when my drain insertion hole was fully closed at 3-4 weeks. For me, someting social, fun and competitive is more fun. I play 3 times a week. I also walk my English Bulldog 1/2 hour a day in the evening. Here in Arizona it is so hot it is hard to get much exercise outdoors this time of year.

Osteoarthritis- pelvic and hip bones pain, is anyone experiencing this?
Shustar replied to fancy50's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
As a CPED (Certified Pedorthist) I think TheRealMeIsHere! makes a good point. Your feet are the foundation of your entire skeletal system. If you are a bit of an over-pronator it will put excess stress on ankle, knee, hip and back. Assuming after 5 years, you are at/close to goal and still exersizing regularly, I would check on the amount of support I am getting. You might want to see a Podiatrist or find a CPED in your area. -
Favorite unflavored protein?
Shustar replied to hopefulmom76's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I use Biochem Whey Protein in the Natural (unflavored)variety. No smell when you open the can. It mixes so easily in everything I have tried it in. I use it in soup, Crystal Lite, sugar free jello and puddings. 20g protein/ 90 cals. -
Protein powders and shakes
Shustar replied to scarletwitch19's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
My Dr recommends Biochem Whey Protein in the unflavored variety. This is great in Soups, yogurt and in Crystal Lite. I buy it through Amazon. 1 scoop is 20g protein/90 cals. -
hungry but can't make myself eat
Shustar replied to Bethson's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When your car gets low on gas, do you stop and fill it even when you don't feel like it?! Food is just the fuel we need to keep our bodies healthy and able to perform tasks and even to lose weight. An underfed machine will not perform at peak performance, you will not be as active and you will slow your weight reduction. If yo don't want to mess with preparing meals, at least get some protein shakes down. From one Iowa (Manchester) girl to another, don't let your energy level and mood dictate the care and feeding of your new body under construction! -
How many calories are you getting?
Shustar replied to Sara51692's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have such an easy time getting fluids and protein in that it kind of scares me. I have a Premeir shake for Breakfast (30g protein) after a 12 oz cup of hot tea. Lunch is Biochem Whey protein powder (30 g) mixed in 24 oz water with 2 Crystal Lite packets. I might also have a cup of soup and a Dannon Greek Lite Yougurt (12 g protein). Dinner is another Crystal Lite Pretein shake (30g). during the day I will also drink a 32 oz G2 Gatorade. Is this too much? -

Shustar replied to glitter eyes's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Congratulations glitter eyes! Here are a couple more things for your list: 1. You have gained a better self esteem and confidence!. 2. You have gained hundreds of people on this site who like, admire and respect you (I know I do!). and 3. You now have control over what you eat. Again, way to go! From one of your admirers! -
Ok. WTF am I doing wrong?
Shustar replied to thecakewasalie's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am 15 days out and have lost 9.2 pounds since surgery. I know I had a lot of swelling and bloating after surgery. When I weighed the first time after getting home 5 days after surgery, I was up 7 pounds! I was so shocked. Being patient and kind to myself, I know my body is doing just what it should do and I am going to love it for doing that. This is not a race but a long term solution. -
Brush your teeth and go for a walk! This too will pass!

Blessings! This truly is a gift from God!

Exercise after Surgery (worries!)
Shustar replied to DojiGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Doji! At first your recument bike will be awesome. Have you done a foot and gait assessment by a qualified expert. A good running shoe with a good arch support might take some immediate pressure off those knees. I only got my sleeve acouple of weeks ago and I am still so excited! Welcome! -
Post op Smoking & Cheating. HELP!
Shustar replied to clopezrogina's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It is really tough trying to quit smoking and being on the pre-op diet at the same time. Please stay away from guns and knives. Of course, we all know the reasons for not smoking and believe me you will want your new stomach to heal as fast as possible so you can start eating again. No only will you be on liquids for pre-op but you will also spend a considerable amount of time being on them after surgery. The docs want you to have a successful outcome. It is bad enough to cheat on pre-op but if you do these things on a new baby stomach you could land in life/death consequences. So, just back away from the yummyness and go out and purchase a vape without nicotine (or very low dose). The vape will give you something to do with your mouth and your hands and help make your cessation program successful. I quit smoking last September. The vape was invaluable for the first 6 weeks. Now I am free and clear and on my way to a new healthy me with my new baby stomach! We are on your side. You can do this! -
As a CPED (Certified Pedorthist) I quite agree with wearing compression socks on the trip to and from San Diego to help prevent DVT's Deep Veneous Thrombosis (blood clots). Sockwell makes a beautiful product but may be too small for those of us over a 30BMI. In this case they would not reach all the way to the knee and could actually cause the problems we are trying to avoid. Just a note to be very careful>

How long until I go back to work?
Shustar replied to nomoremeds's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I am 62 and own a retail shoe store. I was sleeved in Mexico on Mon June 8th, drove home (6 hours) on Fri June 12th and was back in the store Saturday June 13th. I also have been through Ovarian cancer and had major abdominal surgery with that. In comparison, this was a breeze, but I am one tough bird. Being at work makes the day go by faster and I am focused on something other than myself. -
My suggestion for OTC "over the counter" would be Aetrex, Powerstep or Spenco. Stay away from most of the Dr. Scholl's. Not much support for the $'s.

Gained most of my weight back
Shustar replied to frumpy69's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Thank you Rogofulm! What a great article! Should be issued to every new sleever! -
Such a big accomplishment! Have you ever noticed how it seems like your body conspires against you when making a landmark loss?! My body wants to tease me and it seems to take forever to get that victory firmly under my belt!

I quite agree with Canyon Baby. I am a CPED (Certified Pedorthist) which is like being a pharmacist to a Orthopedic Surgeon/Podiatrist. Supporting the "palm of your foot" the primary or medial arch is so important. Just as important is the athletic shoes you are wearing. Remember, they need to be replaced every 4-6 months or 4-600 miles. They may look great in terms of tread and uppers but the cushioning in the sole that makes them so comfortable is like bubble wrap and is flattened a bit with every step. Considering our weight, they often "bottom out" even sooner. Find a good running store or comfort/orthopedic store and have a gait assessment done. This is usually done free of charge. Finally, wear the appropriate shoe for your foot and gait. Make sure you are in the correct size. Most athletic shoes run about a full size short. I usually recommend running shoes over walking shoes as running shoes are built with more support and "toe spring" which helps the foot roll through more efficiently. Brands I would recommend are Brooks, New Balance, Asics, Saucony and Hoka. Reebok, Skechers, Nike and Easy Spirit should be avoided for your workout as they just do not have the right amount of support. Under no circumstances should Keds or Toms be worn as you performance shoe. WE don't want to create issues that will take us off our feet. Don't forget to wear good socks. Micro Fiber, wool and silk are good choices. Contrary to popular thought, cotton is to be avoided as cotton will absorb creating a damp environment for the foot. It also increases in tensile strength when wet so makes it easier to blister. This is probably too much info but hope it helps.

2 monthes post op and have lost no weight since week 5
Shustar replied to Roxydoll67's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Geez Louise! You have lost 57 pounds in 10 weeks assuming the rest of the loss you show is from the pre-diet. That is just huge. I beg you to drop to your knees and kiss the feeet of the diet gods! LOL Really, relax! You are doing great and your body is just processing all the changes it already has performed and getting ready to perform. Take a bow! We are all applauding! -
