Roll call all who had surgery JUNE 2015
maggie409 replied to JosieAppleHead's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello folks, I was sleeved June 15th. I am down 30 pounds from my high weight. I am getting in all my nutrients and taking in about 700 calories a day. I have not started raw vegetables yet. I'm kind of afraid to. I joined s gym this week because I could not remember to walk. I am officially walking 1 mile a day which is amazing for me! I have not really had any frustrations. Everything has been manageable. -
Okay, let the wild rumpus start!

I was originally going to have mine done in Dallas. So here's how that went.... Call and schedule an appointment get one two weeks out. Then get evaluated by staff. They schedule my pre-op blood work for a week away. It takes two weeks for the surgeon to get the results. Surgeons office calls to schedule to finally see a surgeon and the soonest was a month out. I asked the lady once I see the surgeon and he agrees, how long before I get to have the procedure. She says a month to six weeks. I have no co-morbidities. Schedule with BariatricPal. I ask about it, someone sends me a link. I click the link and there are two forms for fill out. I fill out the first and send it. While reading the second form my phone rings. It was David Lopez. Very professional. Very courteous. He answers my barrage of questions. I finish filling out the second form. Within 24 hours the surgeon I want to use calls me and answers my questions and offers to skype with me. I decide to do the procedure, I call David back and I am schedule for 4 weeks out. It could have been sooner but I wanted a few weeks to get off carbs and a few other bad habits. When I was there my experience was amazing! Got picked up at the airport and taken to the recovery house. The doctor came to see me the evening before and answer my questions and explained in detail what would happen. I was taken wherever I needed or wanted to go. The hospital was great. The staff was great. And Dr Jesus Martin Lopez did such an amazing job that I was hardly sore and very little bruising. Oh and I forgot to mention that the nutritionist Skype with me for over an hour before my surgery and set me on the right path for my pre-op diet. The entire staff that I dealt with while I was there included 7 staff, 5 doctors, anesthesiologist and amazing nurses... Karen and Aldo in particular were great! -

I am cash pay and going to Mexico saved me about $10,000. On top of that I got excellent care. -
Days like today are the days that previous diets have failed me. It has been a busy day where everything that can go wrong does. I was getting bombarded from all directions. Work was so trying and stressful, house is a wreck, teens with last minute plans, trying to squeeze in time with grandkids, friends needing my help, husband pretty much nonexistent as always. If I didn't have my sleeve, I would have pulled right into McDonalds tonight as I headed out for yet another late night work call. But I'm very proud of myself. I walked my first full mile at the gym without stopping, I got in just under 750 calories, 85 gr of protein, and 64 ounces of water. The only thing I forgot was my supplements. Thank goodness for my Sleeve!!! I am so glad I made this choice. I will not fail even when the world is going crazy around me!!!

I don't have health insurance so I also went to Mexico. Reasonable price and such a wonderful experience. I booked through BariatricPal and used Dr Jesus Martin Lopez. -
struggling with liquid diet (August 5th surgery)

I also use gnc total lean. I will mix the vanilla half and half with other flavors. It seems to tone them down a bit. I have also diluted them with water. Just tell yourself that this is a very short phase of a long journey! -
Wait 30 minutes or do without?
maggie409 replied to maggie409's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I did go ahead and eat. I don't want myself to go hungry. After I ate it dawned on me that I could have changed directions and had me a protein shake on the way. Hind-sight. -
Camera, bring it or no?
maggie409 replied to LivingLight's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I think it would depend on what company you booked your surgery through and if anyone is going with you. I used BariatricPal and they were great and all of my belongings were safe. But I will say that you will be very focused on your surgery and recovery. It would be ok if you were going a few days before or staying a few days after. -

I was sleeved 6/15. I did two weeks on a pre-op diet. I am 5'1" tall and my high weight was 268. Surgery weight was 254 and my current weight is 238 so I am down 30 pounds overall. I have also lost 19 inches. I am currently getting in about 60-75 gr of protein a day and 64 oz of water and approx 700 calories a day. I have struggled to make walking a habit so I joined a gym today by my work. I will start going before work each day. I am still on soft foods but I am adding more foods each week. I am very pleased!

What you wish you would have known
maggie409 replied to jfzimmerman's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I wish I had been prepared for how the small amount of calories and effects of the anesthesia would affect me mentally. I own my own business and my brain just wasn't working properly for about a month. I officially know what it feels like to be stupid and I didn't like it!! Otherwise everything was as expected. -
I am five weeks post op and consistently getting around 700 calories a day. Some days (like yesterday) I get less (around 600). But if I am getting my protein, water and supplements, then I don't worry about it too much.

If you use the word "addicted" then that in itself is not healthy and you may want to consider eliminating it just for that reason.

When your Nutritionist and Surgeon tell you different things
maggie409 replied to Ashley1213's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My protein shakes were included in the clear liquid stage. You must get your protein. I was on clear liquids for one week. Went to full liquids the second week and then soft foods the next week. -

I don't have that. And I didn't have that at 3 weeks post op. Maybe you need to get it checked just in case. -
Gnc Total Lean. Comes in many different flavors and has 25 gr of protein.

When did you start dieting before your surgery?

Three weeks before surgery. -
My weight today 238. Thanks

Check with your NUT but for me I was not getting enough carbs. We are supposed to get closer to 40% of our calorie intake from carbs. Make sure they are healthy carbs and not sugar filled. From what I was told, carbs are our main source of energy and when we have not carbs to burn our body starts to burn up our proteins. You may not feel comfortable with such a large increase in carbs but talk to your NUT about upping it to maybe 50 gr a day. I know as obese people we learn that carbs are the devil but keep in mind that before WLS we all probably got the majority of our calories from pure carbs. This was my experience and it helped me. Mind you I am only 5 weeks out but I had a period of extreme weekness and it was associated with dehydration and not enough carbs. Good luck!!

Gastric bypass or sleeve?
maggie409 replied to gpmed's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I chose the sleeve over other types of WLS simply because I didn't like the idea of them re-routing my intestines. Also I knew I wanted something permanent. I wasn't comfortable with the malabsorption that came with the bypass and I didn't choose the band because I didn't want the maintenance involved with getting fills. I was sleeved on 6-15. I have lost 30 pounds and I am very pleased. -
How about some NSVs!?!?
maggie409 replied to shyanne's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 5 weeks post op and when I went into Home Depot the line closest to my parking space was LONG so I walked to the other end of the store to the self-checkout and out the delivery bay and the long trec to my car by the garden center. Pretty sure I would still be waiting in line and it felt great to walk and not feel like the weight of the world was on me!!! Oh and I didn't lean on my basket the whole time! Yay for me!! -
how long is the Gastric Sleeve surgery ?
maggie409 replied to boosh10's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am guessing that included time for me to recover from anesthesia. He said it was that long from going in to them bringing me back to my room.
