Hard time losing weight pre-op
SusanDavenporr2015 replied to toasty's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sounds like you need to have a long talk with hubby too. Explain to him that his not eating worries you. When we worry. We often eat. When we eat. We feel guilty. When we feel guilty, we often eat, etc -

No it doesn't sound weird. Actually, it makes a lot of sense. I've been thinking about doing the same thing myself. -

Small (but amazing) accomplishments
SusanDavenporr2015 replied to SusanDavenporr2015's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have never had a problem admitting that I am fat. My children get all ,"Mom, don't say that about yourself!' I'm honest and know what I look like. On the other hand, I take care of myself. I dress in clothes that are attractive, take care that I am neat and clean and sometimes, even take the time to put on make-up. I refuse to be the steriotipical fat woman, slovenly dressed with greasy hair and a candy bar in one hand and a bucket of KFC in the other. I'm also able yo laugh at myself ad seen above as I discribed the antics of simply getting dressed. -
Small (but amazing) accomplishments

Many of us know the morning battle of getting dressed each day. For most people, this is a fairly simple routine, but for the morbidly obese it can be a daunting task. For me it goes sitting on the edge of the bed and placing my pants on the floor, while holding one side. I catch the other side with my left toe (I'm holding them the my right hand), then kind of kick my foot into the leg. Once the left leg is encased, the real battle begins. I have trouble getting my right leg high enough to get it where it belongs, so I have to lift the leg with my hand while trying to hang on to the pants at the same time. By the time I have won this battle with my clothes, or given up in defeat and put on a skirt (yes folks, that's why I wear skirts so often) I feel like I've been "Sweating to the Oldies" with Richard Simmons. The next task is shoes. If I have decided against flip flops that requires placing foot in shoe and getting it as far as my swollen foot will go. Then I either pick up the leg and cross it over the other knee and while holding it in place with one hand, work it in place with the other, or twist it into an unnatural position beside me and work it on. I never buy lace up shoes because we all know where that bow will wind up. Well, I've been doing a lot of walking lately and needed a decent pair of shoes. The pair I had were slipped on canvas shoes that were just not made for that purpose, so I went looking for a pair of athletic shoes that wouldn't kill my budget. The only pair I could find were lace up. I prepared for the up coming battle. First , I loosened up the laces and put my foot in the shoe. With out even thinking about what I was doing, instead of wrestling my leg into position, I reached down, and with very little effort, got my foot the rest of the way in the shoe. Then , amazingly, I proceeded to tie the shoe with the bow in the middle where it belongs. Then I did the same thing with the other shoe. I was so proud of myself that I took a picture and posted it on fb. This morning when I got dressed, I realized when I was done, that I had not gone into battle, but had simply stepped into my pants like everyone else! While I thought this little tale might get a laugh, I also thought it might offer up some encouragement to someone who also wears skirts because they are easier to put on. VIVA LA PANTS AND SHOES!!!!!!! -
Surgery in am

Thank the good Lord I'm already on opiate pain medication. My Dr may have issues, I don't know, but my pain management Dr doesn't. -
Wow! That's so great! I am lucky, in that I know several people that have had the surgery and I can just go"hey, how about such 'n such?" And they tell me about how it worked for them. Also, from the beginning, I had a partner. My youngest daughter and I are doing this together. It might be hard, being away from the support of your husband and daughter during the week, but I'm sure you already make each minute with them special. Meals can be really great times for special. I put out nice table cloth with cloth napkins and napkin rings. I use the good dishes and place food in serving bowls, even if it's just me. Sometimes, I even put candled on the table and always have flowers.

I've been doing a fairly good job of staying away from stuff I'm not supposed to eat. I was able to keep carrots and celery and stuff like that that I could use as fillers in my meals. I used small amounts of fruits and berries mixed with plain or sugar free vanilla yogurt. Yogurt made s nice dessert at meals or added to salad as dressing. But it's end of the month and I don't have those right now. I find myself positively longing for some kind of sweet treat. How do I get passed it. Haven't broken yet but Dairy Queen's not that far away. (Also know that something as sweet as a blizzard will probably not even taste that good. My daughter decided I wanted a taste of hers and poked it in my mouth. Too sweet, just the one bite)

Hard time losing weight pre-op

I live with my daughter who is the same way. I put my foot down and told her all meals are to be eaten at the table and no snacking in the living room. I enjoy eating out some but it's expensive. Try sitting your wife down and showing her just how much money is spent eating out. Then make an agreement to eat out once or twice a month as a treat. Also show her a list of foods that are not a good idea for you to eat. Explain that some of them can actually make you sick after the surgery. Try to find alternatives. In fact, this months newsletter for this sight has some grilling alternatives in it. You can google recipes for after WLS as well. -
I only have to have three months. I started walking with a wheeled walker with a seat on it so I could rest. I have degenerative disc disease, and have a lot of pain. I Also have COPD and run out of breath quickly. since I have been walking the muscles in my back have strengthened enough that yesterday I walked several blocks without walker or cane. I feel better and have more energy.

Honey, these feeling are in no way unusual. We feel them with most any big life change. The high school grad who decided to go to collage halfway across the country will start feeling like he should stay close to home in case his parents need him. Everyone knows the prewedding jitters. Then there's the widowed mom that has accepted a marriage proposal, only to feel like she's cheating on her late husband. These are all normal reactions to stressful situations. That's all you're having. There is no reason to feel anger or guilt. And it's not like you're taking one of the magic "and you don't have to do anything different to lose weight" pills. You're taking control and making an effort. That says a lot. This is not an easy path we have put ourselves on. It is a lifetime commitment. It is possible to screw the whole thing up if you loose sight of why you're doing it. Keeps your back straight and your head high. Walk proudly my sister in surgery.

Wow girl, your doing awesome! I wish I was doing as well. I had lost 16 lbs in the first 5 weeks after starting my doctor supervised diet and exercise program. Not a pound since. I am 54 stand 5' 5" and, right now, weigh 348. I'm proud of what I have accomplished so far, but really would like to lose more. When this is all over, I'm hoping for about 150, but may drop a little more. When I got the letter from the doctor, telling me that my insurance would pay, I started dancing around singing, "I'm gonna loose a person". I don't know, yet, when to expect my surgery but I'm thinking probably September of October. You know, right at the beginning of that feeding frenzy we all lovingly call " the holidays".

Finally My Day a Has Arrived

Praying for you and your surgical team. -
News flash people. WLS is hard work. There is NO easy way to lose weight. Anybody that has it in their head that this is easy needs to pay more attention. I chose to have WLS because I am 54, just lost my husband and really want to see my grandchildren grow up. They took the loss of their papaw very hard and I'm not making them lose another grandparent due to poor health choices. I'm going with the gastric bypass because I was recently diagnosed with diabetes. BTW I am also a transplanted Oregonian in Texas. I've been hear about 30 years now. I visited Oregon in February and again, after my husband passed in October of 2013. It was great seeing my home state, but I sorely missed my adopted one. I thought it was too cold and too wet. That was before the great wet spring of 2015.

Walking in the rain

I've been asking around. Even posted on Erath County Buy Sell and Give Away on Fb. Also talked to my pastor. I'll keep looking and trust God to provide. -
Hi everyone, I was so proud of myself when I started out on this journey. I started walking. The first time I walked 3 1/2 blocks to the front of my church and had to stop and rest before I could make it back. The next day I did the same thing. I made it one more block the next day. Each day I walked a little farther until I was walking to the cemetery to visit my husband and clean the debris from his grave. Then the rains came. Light rain I could continue to walk in, but these were like Asian monsoons, with tornados to boot. I say were, they're still going on. I've been looking for a secondhand treadmill or something along that line because there's no way I can afford a new one. We all know half the people out there that have them bought them after making New Year's resolutions and now they're sitting in a bedroom being used as a clothes rack, but no one seems to want to get rid of them. My daughter suggested getting a Wii. They're a fun way to get exercise. I might look into that, but again, it will have to be second hand. I have, however, discovered the exercise and fitness shows on TV. I found two that were Christian based and really enjoyed the workout. So, for all you newbies in Texas, like me, that are trying to get that exercise with out being washed away, there are quite a few options still available. Then there'd always swimming. It may become necessary.

Lol, a friend posted a pic of his neighbor out in the pouring rain on his riding mower. Dude was soaked to the skin. I grew up in Oregon but been 30 years in Texas. My gills disappeared a long time ago. I'd try mowing but my son-in-law's mower takes special know how and I don't know the password. When it'd dry enough I work in my flower beds and I like to walk the dog, all but the American bulldog. She wants to pull. We're working on that though. When it drys up some I'm going to get the kids to start taking me out to the lake on the weekends. It's been awesome the amount of energy I have developed from the exercise program I HAVE been able to do. When I walked to the Dollar store I felt great. I have plans to help out with VBS and our church's program to help home owners that are disabled or low income with home repair. (They won't let me actually work -

Started to buy swim fins and goggles when I took advantage of a relatively dry spell today and walked to the dollar store with my daughter and her husband. Figured I'd need them and maybe some water wings next time I went out. Gonna learn to swim up stream like the salmon. -
The Pre-Op Journey
SusanDavenporr2015 replied to LeslieT63's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Keep up the good work. Quitting smoking is a hard thing to do, but the benefits outweigh the effort. I too am just starting out. I have my psych eval the 8th of next month and see the GI doc and cardiologist on the 15th. The 7th of July, I have what should've been my 2nd visit with my FNP, but she's leaving (which is fine by me, she treated me like I was a spoiled child and then gave me no timeline or information but the bare necessities). So I will be having a first visit with a different FNP. My daughter and I started this journey together, so we kind of support each other. Good luck, and if you need someone to talk to, holler. -
Telling my friends/family/work
SusanDavenporr2015 replied to Tiana Harris's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm a widow and have been on-line dating. I told a man that I had gotten very close to. He started with, "Why would you do that? You look great." When I told him that while I have no problem with the way I look, I have lots of problems with the way I feel. I want to watch my grandchildren grow up and see great grandchildren. That won't happen if I continue where I'm at. His next thing was, "I hope you're not going to be one of those people that can only eat a thimbleful of food at a time." When I told him, yeah, that was going to be me, he disappeared. His loss. Not mine. Now I tell any guy that contacts me that I'm having the surgery and if they want a fat girl to just keep on walkin' because I'm not stoppin',
