Am I the only one with a one-day pre-op diet?

My sister had gastric bypass surgery 10 Yeats ago and she told my that back then they didn't do the liquid diet pre-op. She said that it was a "last meal" diet. You weren't going to get to eat it anymore so this was your last chance to eat the fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy with peach cobbler for dessert, etc. -
Scared to death

I was lucky. My husband was alive when I first started looking into WLS and he was on board from the beginning. Sadly, I lost him before I found my surgeon. My whole family, from my parents and sisters in Oregon, to my children here in Texas, are rooting for my. Also, if you ate determined to lose the weight this way and follow instructions, you won't gain it back. This is true of most SUCCESSFUL weight loss methods. My mother was able to lose over one hundred lbs without surgery, but she committed herself to portion control and exercise. It worked got her, and she's been able to keep it off for 40 years. My sister had gastric bypass 10 years ago and she's kept it off. She's my go to person when I have questions. -

Wow! I'm going to have the do 2 weeks, but that's ok because it will help me with my post-op. -
Use that time to help you adjust to new dietary requirements. Practice taking baby bites (my dietician says about half the size of you thumb nail) and chewing it to mush before swallowing. (I can't even chew a single piece of Trident without biting the inside of my mouth) Keep working on your diet and exercise, and most importantly, don't get discouraged. Come talk to us, and any support you have at home. Have you told your students? Kids make a great cheer leading squad.

Hi, I'm new at this too. I see my psych June 8. I weigh 350 and when I got my letter telling me that my insurance was going to pay I danced around the house singing, "I'm gonna lose a person!". My kids thought I'd lost my mind till I showed them the letter. Then they laughed with me. They wouldn't sing and dance with me though.

Scared to death

Understandable, there can be some serious complications. There's no point in denying that. I'm just starting this process and I talked with my children and grandchildren and made sure that they understood what was going on and why I'm doing this. Open communication is probably the most important thing you can do. I get the grandchildren involved by letting them walk with me. I have a wheeled walker that I use when I walk because of my back problems. When we get ready the kids make sure there is water in the basket then we decide where we are headed. It has been a lot easier by letting them participate in some small way. -
My Journey ????
SusanDavenporr2015 replied to ReadyFourChange's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Your story borne my heart. I to have been large my entire life. I was cruelly mocked and when I tried to talk to my parents I was given a "suck it up" type of attitude. My mother told me that I had a pretty face. If I would lose some weight, I would be beautiful. I look back and, while my mother didn't phrase it in a supportive way, she was concerned. She was quite large and had some food issues of her own. I know that she hated the pain I was going through, but didn't know how to help me. It wasn't until I was an adult that I learned that a woman could be large and attractive. Once I learned this my life got much better. I learned that by taking the time to choose clothing carefully, take pride in my appearance I had people telling me I looked nice, rather than mock me. I am proud of who I am. The problems are with my health, something that really hit me when my husband passed away. I saw how hard it was for my grandchildren and didn't want to be the cause of that kind of grief so I decided to take matters into my own hands and fix the problem. I know it's hard to have a strong sense of worth when you have a weight problem, but don't let you weight define you and don't let it keep you from your doctor. Trust me, no one is laughing at your weight problem. They are there to help you get better. If they are then they need to find a new line of work. -
Newbie

Yeah, I was just popping off on the baby food thing. I'm not a candidate for back surgery, but I do have an intrathecal pain pump. Basically, that means it puts pain medicine directly into my spinal column at the L3-L4 area. I am looking forward to the journey ahead and am greatful for the support from family and friends. My only regret is that my husband was not able to see it. I walk as much as I can but, we're having a pretty wet spring this year (praise God) and between the rain, hail, and tornados it's getting difficult. I'm trolling Facebook hoping someone has exercise equipment that is doubling as a clothes rack that they would sell CHEAP or even better, give away. I haven't had much luck, but I will continue in my search. My daughter has some undiagnosed health issues that make it even harder for her. Her loses feeling and strength in her legs when she walks too much. We try to keep each other up beat but sometimes it:s difficult. -
Hi, my name is Susan and my daughter and I have just begun this life changing journey. We have both had out first visit with our RNPs, and visited with the dietician. I groaned and she laughed when we were told that when we were able to eat pasta and vegetables they would have to be cooked down yo mush. I like my food to have some texture , thank you very much. I told my daughter I might as well eat baby food. I have begun a walking regiment. I was surprised at how this is working out as I have degenerative disc disease and have trouble with back pain when I exercise. In fact, if I don't over do it, I find that I feel pretty good afterwards. Well that's a quick intro of me and my beginning journey.

Disappointed Family

Honey fill that happy bubble back up! 16 lbs on your own it something to be proud of. If you parents can't see that, that's sad on their part. People who don't have weight issues can't understand how hard it is to lose it. Just keep working on it and don't let them get you down. -
Scared to death
SusanDavenporr2015 replied to samcl1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When my daughter first started looking for s surgeon her young children were frightened. They were afraid that Momma was going to be sick or die or I'm not sure of all the ideas that popped into their heads, but then they're little. To rase their fears, I called my sister, who had the surgery 10 years ago, and asked her if she would talk to the boys. We put the phone one speaker and set it in the middle of the table as she began going through the steps from the pre-op liquid diet, what the hospital stay was like too post-op eating for the first few weeks. Then she had a little Q and A session with them. I was surprised by some of the intelligent questions asked by my 10-year-old grandson. I know that your children are older, but the premise still works. If you know someone who has gone through the surgery, ask them to talk to your family. It might help to alleviate their fears. -

I just recently had my first visit with the RNP. I had my family involved from the beginning. In fact daughter is have surgery as well. My whole family is supportive. The only person that had a problem was the guy I had an on-line relationship with and that's his loss I explained to everyone that I didn't have a problem with my looks, but I do want to see my grandkids grow up and with my weight where it is then I wouldn't -
Nervous Grandma

Djmohr yes I have considered changing. In fact, my daughter told me I ought to. I have decided to give her the benefit of the doubt, and just figure she was having a bad day. If, when I go back in July, I have similar issues, I will request a new RNP -
Hi, my daughter and I both decided to look into surgery to help us lose weight. My sister did it 10 years ago and her son-in-law completed his first year on April 1. We found someplace that would take our insurance, went to a seminar, got the letter telling us that said insurance had agreed to pay for the surgery, and BAM we have each had our first appointment with the RNP. We each have different RNPs. Hers gave her a whole lot of information, including approximately how much time before she would actually have the surgery. Mine spent the whole time making me feel like a small child. When I told her that I understood my eating problems,(I eat when I'm stressed), she turned around and gave my a weird looked and asked me how was I going to do this if I was a stress eater. The whole program is stressful. I thought she was going to tell me I couldn't do it. I simply told her that recognizing the problem is the beginning of conquering it. I just have to pay attention to why I'm looking in the fridge. Am I hungry, or am I stressed or bored. She acted like she was skeptical. I went to my regular doctor to begin the doctor supervised diet and exercise before I saw the RNP. 5 weeks later I went back and found I had already lost 16 lbs. Take that Ms Skeptical.

Nervous Grandma
SusanDavenporr2015 replied to SusanDavenporr2015's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
James, I understand this. I am bi-polar and not on medication, because I learned to recognize my symptoms and deal with them rather than letting them deal with me. I can do, and have started doing the same with my eating habits. When I find myself staring in the fridge I ask myself am I hungry and when was the last time I ate. If it's been less than 4 hours, I drink water and find something useful to do. If more than 4, I take the time to prepare a complete meal. This makes me focus on what goes into the prep work and what I am putting on my plate. I have to pay attention. When you grab a handful of carrots or grab a protein bar or something like that, you are just nibbling and not paying attention to what your eating. I have found that if I find myself on the verge of a mindless snacking if I start work on my crochetin
