    Vitamins...?

My surgeon requires chewable Vitamins. I take Centrum Silver Chewables and Walgreens Calcium Chewables. I take one of each a day. The calcium chewables are pretty tasty - fruit punch, orange and cherry. The Centrum Silver aren't all that good, but they were the ones I could stomach best out of the multiple kinds I tried! I just got my wisdom teeth out and bought some liquid Multivitamins and calcium to supplement while I couldn't chew and the Multivitamin tastes like old grape juice and I couldn't even stomach the texture of the calcium... ick! I started taking my multivitamin before surgery and my calcium I started about a week after (took that long to go buy some). The upside was they gave me something to chew while I was on liquids!
  2. Do you have insurance that's going to cover your surgery? If you do, just remember its worth jumping through all their hoops to get to a healthier life! Even when it gets frustrating :)

  3. Hey Sharon! Surgery was relatively easy actually! I had pain around my port site for about a two weeks and had some gas pains that lasted for about a week and a half. I was up and walking within 3 hours of surgery (they wouldn't let me up sooner) and then I walked off and on all night. I had to stay overnight so I didn't have anything better to do since I couldn't get to sleep on my back!

I'm a month out now, and to be honest, I'm a lucky bandster, I'm not hungry. Haven't had a fill since I'm losing weight and can't eat over 1/2 c. of solid proteins. I stay full for 3.5 hours. I exercise 5-6 days/wk.

I spent my 6 month supervised diet learning as much about my new life as possible. I knew to succeed I had to figure out why I ate, when I ate and what to do when I couldn't eat to make myself feel better. It's going to be a lifelong journey - but well worth it!

Congratulations on starting your journey! Good luck with all your pre-surgery steps and feel free to contact me anytime!

    Totally bummed out!!!

I'm so sorry that happened! Hang in there!!! Did they get you a new surgery date yet? Stupid snow... :wink2:
  5. Congrats on your 9 pounds!! You're doing great! Cutting out soda and upping your water intake are both great jump starts for your surgery! And walking is going to be your best friend after surgery to help minimize the gas pain!! Keep up the hard work - you're going to do wonderful with your band! :wink2:

    Waiting to be banded

Luckily I didnh't have the gas pain in the shoulder. My tummy was painful at first until they let me up to walk, but then that's pretty much all I did. I had to stay overnight and I walked every 30 mins or so because I was bored and I felt relatively good. My port was really sore for the first 2 or 3 days. Felt like it was pulling every time I got up when I still had the big bandages on it. Then after I got to take the main dressings off it was so much better. Not as heavy I guessed, making it not pull down as much. I couldn't sleep on my side for around a week because of the uncomfortableness but pain wise I was good within a week. I had surgery on Wednesday and went back to work the following Tuesday. I could have made it back Monday pain-wise, but I was super tired because I hadn't been able to sleep on Sunday night due to being uncomfortable in bed. Tuesday was a rough day at work and by the end of it I was pretty tired. The worst was sitting upright in my work chair!! Put some major pressure on my port! Congrats on your journey!! :wink2:
  7. I had a 14 day full liquid diet. Carnation instant breakfast with added protein for breakfast, lunch and supper were cream soups mixed with protein. I also asked permission to have egg drop soup and it was a life saver. I lost 19 lbs in the two weeks and didn't cheat at all.

    5 days and counting...

With the exception of my EGD, I had never had anesthesia before surgery. I was scared of general anesthesia, mostly worrying I wouldn't wake up. They put my IV in shortly after I got there. Then they gave me some relaxation drugs about 30 minutes before I was to go into the OR. Right before they rolled me out of my room they gave me some more drugs. They rolled me in and I had to move from my bed to the surgery table. Then they put a mask over my face and told me my hand was going to burn. That's all I remember until I woke up. There were quite a few people in the room when they were putting me to sleep but I have no idea what they were doing, I only remember my nurse and anesthesiologist. I woke up in recovery shaking and after they got that calmed down I was taken to my room (had to stay overnight per Dr. policy). It wasn't anywhere near as bad as what I had worked myself up to thinking it would be! Good luck! I'm sure you'll all do wonderfully!
  10. At my highest weight I weighed 312 pounds. I've lost around 95 lbs from my top and a size 2 co-worker (I'm a size 14/16 depending on clothes) goes "how much more weight do you want to lose?" And I answered and she goes "well don't get too skinny, you don't want to look bad." Umm, excuse me Miss Size 2... I know she didn't mean it in a bad way (well, I hope not at least) but still... you're telling me not to get too skinny and you're TINY! It's amazing to me sometimes what pops out of peoples mouths. I understand that I am way smaller than I used to be, but I'm still larger than "average". So many people say "don't lose too much weight" but I don't understand why they are so opposed to us striving to reach our ideal weights...

    Any January 2010 Bandsters????

I'm with you. I constantly burp and if I can't then I get some major tightness in my chest. The worst is when I try to burp and it doesn't come out! It's worse with certain foods. I work out for an hour a day and it hasn't helped any. I make sure to eat 4 hours before bed and if I can't then I sleep in a sitting up position for the first portion of the night.

Losing too much weight prior to surgery???

My surgeon's office also sends starting weight. By the day of surgery I was down around 60 pounds.

    Toothache relief question

I'm having surgery on Friday! YAY! Can't wait to be able to sleep through the night again!
  14. I can't get into the oral surgeon until 3/12 and have had major pain today. I know we aren't supposed to use NSAIDS due to damaging our tummies. Does anyone have suggestions for what I can take to help the pain and inflammation?

    Toothache relief question

Thanks guys! I refilled my Lortab prescription that I had left over from surgery. That has helped a lot. I called my dentist and changed oral surgeons so I can get in on Monday now for my consult! I'm so thankful for that because tooth pain has got to be the most frustrating thing ever.

    Toothache relief question

My lower left wisdom tooth came through finally and broke off part of the molar in front of it. So I'm getting all 4 wisdom teeth out and then the broken one. I was just at the regular dentist yesterday and there wasn't any infection. My husband stopped and bought Children's Motrin. Hopefully it will kick in so I can get some sleep. Thanks for answering so quickly!

    Getting to know you...

Hey everyone! My name is Jessika, I'm 26 and from Minnesota. I've been with my husband for 7 1/2 years and married for 3 1/2. We don't have any kids yet. I got banded January 27th. I move to solid foods tomorrow! Woo-hoo! I have degenerative disk disease and trying to get around when my back was out when I weighed 312 was practically impossible. The constant low back and neck pain made life suck and I decided it was time to do something about it. I started the journey in Jan. 2008 but due to my hubby's job going downhill I had to stop 4 months into the medically supervised diet. I'd lost 40 pounds and figured I could do more on my own. Ha! Gained it back just like every other time. So after 2 more bouts of not being able to walk (and a new job for my husband) I started my insurance process again and got banded! Best decision of my life. I've lost 95 lbs. from my top weight (about 70 since starting my 6 months) and although my back hasn't gotten much better, I'm hopeful that by the time I reach goal it will be better. I'm enjoying banded life. I'm one of the lucky ones who isn't hungry. I know that can change at any time, but I'm hoping not! The head hunger is kind of amazing to me though. It's like every food I didn't like before sounds SO great now that I can't have it! It's ridiculous sometimes. Nice to meet you all and I hope everyone's journeys go smoothly!!

    Frustrated and Angry!

Does your surgeon deal with only a specific psych professional? My MMPI-2 was included in the cost of my visits. And my total for the 3 visits was only around $400. My insurance didn't pay for any of the visits either. Is it possible to price shop for a cheaper visit since you only have to take the MMPI-2? I hope you can find somewhere cheaper so you can move forward with your journey! Good luck!

Banded Yesterday; What is normal Pain?

I "gained" about 4 pounds too right after surgery. My body got rid of all the excess fluids in about 3 days. Congrats on surgery and Good luck!!

    Cost With Insurance

I did my 6 months supervised diet along with my 3 psych visits last year so I paid for all that out of pocket. Well, I used my flex spend account actually so that was nice to have. Insurance was approved on December 18, 2009 so we scheduled for January 27th so I could do all my pre-op visits in January so everything would come out of this years insurance. I will have to pay my $1500 deductible and $4000 out of pocket max. So for a grand total of $5500 I get a new lease on life!

    Any January 2010 Bandsters????

Just got the call from the surgery department. We have to be there at 7:15 a.m. tomorrow. I'm really starting to get nervous now. I can't believe its finally here!
  22. what did you consume on your preop diet ? Carnation Instant Breakfast Sugar Free mixed with skim milk and non-fat dry milk, cream soups mixed with skim milk and non-fat dry milk and my personal saviour (ok'd by my nut.), egg drop soup. SF jello, SF popsicles for a snack (twice daily). Any combination of these adding up to 60g protein. how long was it for ? 2 weeks (One week down) how much did you lost? I've lost 10 pounds so far did you get sick or dizzy? surprisingly, as long as I stay around the 60g protein mark, I feel just fine. were you taking medication? I only take birth control and Protonix (acid reflux meds)

    Any January 2010 Bandsters????

I start my liquid diet today!! Only 2 more weeks til I get my band!
  24. I am losing my weight because I want to go one day, heck, one hour, without pain. I have degenerative disk disease and my low back and neck cause constant pain. The orthopedic surgeon said at this point nothing will help except losing weight (barring surgery, which they don't like to do on overweight individuals). When my back is at its worst, my husband has to help me in and out of bed, get me dressed, help me shower - basically he has to help me with everything. I'm tired of feeling like a burden to him. I am 26 years old and feel like I'm 80. I will lose this weight so I can lead a healthy, normal and active life.

    I quit, smoking that is....

I smoked for 6 1/2 years and quit cold turkey back on September 30, 2007. I personally love forums. I spent the first few months on QuitNet - the Web's largest online quit smoking community - friendly support and advice. Every time I wanted to smoke I went there and read. I killed many hours worth of cravings just reading random things. It counts out how many days, hours, minutes that you have been quit and how much money you have saved. It helped seeing it all there in black and white. Congratulations on your new healthier life!!
