  1. I don't start my pre-op diet till next week, but I'll let you know! I have not gained from doing a protein diet before, but I would suggest looking at the nutritional info on the bars. Typically, they have a LOT of sugar alcohols which don't "count" as carbs in the net count, but really, can have an impact on your blood sugar and kick you out of ketosis (fat burning stage) if you eat too many. My NUT said to only eat bars etc once a day because of the sugar alcohols. I've noticed that if I eat only 3-4 bars a week instead of every day, I lose more weight that week. I've been doing low carb for 3.5 months and have lost 41lbs. (HW 371, CW 330). I had to lose 10% of my body weight before scheduling surgery. Keep up the good work! I think doing 3 shakes and 1 bar will be better and you'll see more results! Hope this helps!
  2. My liver shrinking diet is for two weeks prior to surgery. I drink 3-4 (no more than 5) Premier Protein shakes a day with one string cheese and one hard boiled egg (OR two string cheeses). All in all, I was told not to go over 900 calories. I think 600 is decently low!

How common is a Hiatal Hernia?

I have read that by age 60, 60% of the population has them - more frequently in obese people, but I don't know how frequent. My surgeon says heartburn (especially GERD) is a good indicator of having one, though not all people with heartburn have a hernia and not all people with a hernia have heartburn. FWIW, I'm 30, I've been obese all my life and did not have one. Good luck in getting your surgery!
  4. I'm July 29th! So excited!

    July sleevers?

I think a private Facebook group would be great! I'm interested, if anyone else is. Though not sure I'm techy enough to set one up...

    July sleevers?

Nope, not weird!! I love drinking Protein Shakes too. I drink them for Breakfast even if I'm not currently "dieting" - I like the taste and they are fast. I'm a "do I sleep 10 more minutes or make a breakfast?" kind of person. :-) I nervous about my tastes changing after surgery. Some people have said they drank them pre-op, but couldn't stand the taste post op!

    How to be Successful?

I've seen you post this article many times and as someone who reads posts all the time on here, I thank you! It is a wonderful article and it needs to be shared - again and again - so no complaints from me! It really explains the science behind stalls very well. Thank you for helping us soon-to-be sleeved and those new to their WLS journey! Original poster, click on the article, it's a good read! I haven't been sleeved yet, but I've been doing low carb (20-30 grams) for 3 months leading up to my surgery and I have experienced exactly the same thing! Even if I have a planned cheat day, I'll put on that Water weight because of glucose storage and lose that quickly (About 6lbs for me). Then lose a little more the next week, and then stall again (for a week to two weeks) due to the fat storage being converted to usable energy. It's a little different for everyone, but the science is there. I recommend taking your measurements!! I'll lose inches even if the scale doesn't move during stalls. For this reason, cheat meals are few and far between because I don't want to start the ketosis "process" again! The key take away: keep doing what you are doing. Everyday, all day! You've got this! :-)
  9. Wow! You look great! I can definitely see a difference. I can't wait for that first 100lb milestone. I've lost that much on my own once, but gained it all back, plus more. My highest weight was 371, current weight 332 from dieting pre-op. I hope I'll be about 320 day of surgery, but we'll see. Thank you for the responses so far! :-)
  10. Thank you for posting this question - I will be getting sleeved 300+ pounds and wondered about any success stories out there. There is a 100+ and 200+ weight to lose board somewhere on here, but they are not very active. I hope we can hear from some higher BMI sleevers - I feel like I mostly see "low" BMI starting weights on here.
  11. You look amazing and glad to hear you feel amazing, too! You are so inspiring and I can't wait to get my sleeve! I am still waiting to hear from my insurance. Thank you for sharing your stories!

    Weird/worst Comment at Pre-op testing!

Are you serious?!?!? Was this a psychologist that was specifically recommended for bariatric patients? Yes! My bariatric center suggested her as a part of a Psychological group (about 6 psychs in the group). I told them after what she said and they were unhappy. She ended up not approving me unless I completed 8 more sessions! I ended up going to get another opinion and the next guy was awesome and said there are psychs out there that really don't believe in the surgery and will decline for any reason. He approved me easily. My bariatric clinic is no longer referring that group as a whole, but only specific psychologists. I wasn't the only one with complaints.

    Pregnant

There is a pregnancy board here as well, look it up! I've read of several women who get pregnant 2 or 3 weeks after surgery. They have had very successful pregnancies and my Dr said you can continue to lose weight for about the first 3/4 of the pregnancy safely. While it's not recommended to be pregnant this early, it can be quite safe.

    Weird/worst Comment at Pre-op testing!

Ugh! So sorry you had to put up with that. I'm currently in my pre-op process and everyone has been wonderful, except my psychologist. She spend 30 minutes of our 60 minute appointment talking about herself (tall, slender) and how "weight loss is easy" and she lost 14lbs from just eating smaller meals - she "didn't even exercise!" She then detailed two recipes to me I should try. Seriously? If I only had 14lbs to lose, I probably wouldn't need surgery. I don't consider that a health crisis - mostly vanity pounds (which are fine, but don't confuse that with my BMI of 54).
  15. Many straws! I would say the one that made me pick up the phone to see a surgeon was dieting for the 100th time, and gaining the weight back. Again. For the 100th time. Other "straws"- 1.) starting to have heart palpitations and occasional chest pain. Cleared by a cardiologist....but it still gives me anxiety. 2.) losing 100lbs on my own and gaining it back. 3.) wanting to have a 2nd baby, but too scared to be pregnant again at this weight. (Lots of pregnancy/delivery complications related to weight with my first baby). 4.) loving to socialize, but always dreading seeing family I haven't seen in awhile during the holidays and wondering if they are judging my weight gain, how I eat, etc. I just want to go to family functions and enjoy! 5.) being too big to fit- in everything. The regular sized BP cuff at the doctors office, seats in airplanes, restaurants, and theaters, etc. 6.) not having enough energy for my 2 year old and my stomach being too big for her to sit comfortably on my lap to read a book. 7.) my father and grandfather had heart attacks/congestive heart failure and my father has diabetes. Poorly controlled diabetes. He has constant issues with foot sores. I do not want that life!!
  16. Great replies! I'm still in pre-op status and freak out about all that can go wrong on the table all the time.
  17. @@stevecfo - How did your surgery go? Are you so relieved to be done?! I'm still getting approved, but your thoughts just sound so much like mine. "Am I really trying to do this?!" Hope your recovery goes smoothly!
