Questions and concerns on malabsorption
spiritfilled posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am considering bypass surgery. My BMI is a little over 38 and I have very bad GERD with Barrette's esophagus and a hernia. Because I am obese, my surgeon as said that if the hernia were fixed, it still may not completely help the GERD because I am obese. I have been considering bypass surgery for someone time now, but had other things come up. He has told me that Bypass surgery will solve my GERD problem and he can fix the hernia while he is in there. I had originally wanted a sleeve but he said because of the GERD, he would suggest the bypass. One of my major concerns with the bypass is malabsorption. There is a lady at work who had the bypass and is on 5000 mgs of Vitamin D and is now in the beginning stages of osteoporosis. Malabsorption is a major concern of mine and one of the reasons I wanted the sleeve to begin with. I am wondering how big of a concern has this been to you? Should it be a concern? Any info is appreciated -

You are not alone. I have not had WLS yet, because I have other issues going on. However, if this helps, I am having major eye surgery Aug 12. I am scared and nervous. I am afraid of being face down for 7-10 days. I am afraid of being restricted to lifting anything over 10 lbs for 6 weeks. I am afraid this surgery will not work and it will fail. I am afraid I will lose my eye sight. I am afraid I am making the wrong decision. I am afraid the doctor will have a slip of the hand. I am afraid because we do not know the outcome. I am afraid that no one will be here with me while I am face down. I am afraid I will blow out the gas bubble. I am afraid of going under anesthesia because of breathing problems on my last endoscopy. I am afraid of being face down and lower back pain, and squishing my big boobs and of hurting my esophagus and putting pressure on it. I realize it is not WLS and it is a 2 month commitment for me but I am making a decision that could affect and change my life. The same fears are there. I have done everything I possibly can do to prepare, and prayed and put myself on prayer requests. I made a decision and I am pressing forward. You do the very best you can and you pray and hope for the best. I have to remember that God did not give me a spirit of fear.

Barrett's Esophagus. Good News. Correction. Great News

Back in May I was having a lot of heartburn, indigestion, pain, and nausea. I had already seen a WL doctor and he suggested that I do the bypass instead of the sleeve because of all my heartburn and indigestion. In the process of this I went to the Gastro doctor and may they did a colonoscopy and a endoscopy. I found out that I have Barrett's esophagus and ulcers in my esophagus. For those of you who don't know, Barrett's esophagus means that I am precancerous. They put me on medication and she wanted to scope me again in 45 days. I was scoped on July 17 and they call me with the results today. No more Barrett's esophagus and everything is looking good. I still have gastritis in my stomach and the same type inflammation in my esophagus. She said to continue my medication. This is better news to me than being approved for weight-loss surgery, Because there is no cancer. I see her in about four weeks and she may discuss hernia repair because my GERD is so bad I think weight-loss surgery is on hold for me right now until I get this stomach and esophagus healed. The other good news is I have drastically decreased my Coke intake and no weight loss. I'm also scheduled for major eye surgery on August 12. This is one of the reasons I chose to back off on weight-loss surgery. But again I am cancer free in Jesus name. Amen -

Approval process – five year history
spiritfilled replied to spiritfilled's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sorry for the slow reply. I have had some issues and dropped off the site for a few days. I went straight to a surgeon on May 4th. 5 people at work have had some sort of surgery and have all used the same clinic, so I made a phone call and got in. All success stories. -
I have a bunch of ulcers in my esophagus and it is per-cancerous. It is called a Barrett's Esophagus. I informed my gastro doctor about weight loss surgery and of course, I can't be touched at this time. They are going to scope me again on July 17th She does not want me to do WLS and wants me to really consider it. She would like me to try a monitored WL program first. She told me that they really move things around in your body and that it will not be the same. She has also said that she has seen people in her practice that have had the surgery that did not lose the weight. I specifically asked her if they had bypass surgery and she said yes. Is it possible to have bypass surgery and not lose weight and be the same size as before the surgery? I have to be honest that I have considered not doing the surgery. I keep thinking, that bypass surgery is a tool, which it is. So my thoughts were, if this surgery is a tool, then I need to learn how to eat properly, change my habits and lose the weight without the surgery. Since I found out about my esophagus, I have put cokes down. And that is a big step for me. Thoughts?

Has anyone tried using HCG with post surgery diet?

I have heard about it and I don't know much about it. Is this a good way to lose weight? And how long did you keep it off and how long did it take you to lose it? -

Now What? Colonoscopy and Endoscopy

Thanks I just want to be well I realize now how unhealthy I have been. I mean I know, but it has now hit me in the face. I honestly believe the Lord has been showing me my unhealthy eating habits and is telling me get well. I can heal you but you have to work on it too. I just don't know if He is telling me I can do this without WLS by changing my habits and I am here for you. I did email the doctors nurse the images today and she is showing them to the doctor to see if I need to out this on hold and heal first. I am pre cancerous. Wisdoms tells me to wait until there is some healing and to make sure there is no chance of cancer at this point. I know the bypass is the right option for me and not the sleeve. I didn't drink coke yesterday. Yay me. But I had some today, 1/4 of a bottle, I started belching and had some pain. We went to Chili's for lunch. I got the turkey sandwich that came with fries. I had less than 5 fries and had the sandwich and salad with no onions. I also got Water but it was gross and had to go for tea. I brought a to go cup back to work and tumped it. This is major progress for me. I am trying to change habits now and I wonder how much weight I will lose in the progress. Which brings me back to the point of can I do this without WLS and my tool being pre cancer. I mean that in itself is a Huge incentive. I will post a picture of my esophagus. So this is a warning for you awesome people that don't like those types of pictures -
Now What? Colonoscopy and Endoscopy
spiritfilled replied to spiritfilled's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The biopsy results came in and I have Barrett's Esophagus with a big fat ugly looking ulcer which is pre-cancerous. The nurse said the doctor said the results came back better than what she expected. They put me on 40 mgs of omerazole twice a day. There was a lot of erosion in my tummy, but it is cancer free. I think I am now off cokes and fast food and just bad food in general. I think this whole WLS may be on hold.
