  1. I was a non-insulin dependent diabetic prior to surgery. My PCP had me monitor my BS and keep her posted. Due to the severe change in my diet during pre-op I was able to cut back on meds. Speak with your PCP about proper monitoring of your BS levels and how he/she wishes to communicate with you through the process. You may find also that as you lose weight your insulin needs will change. It will be important to have an open line of communication with him/her so you don't feel sick.
  2. As yu do your research you will also find that more and more people are having to have revisions from lap band to sleeve due to slipping of the band. There are tons of people out there who have done just fine with the bands, don't get me wrong but yeah my preference is still the sleeve. I agree that in thinking of the sleeve, it is a very permanent decision but I am committed to do this and I like that it is irreversible. I have waited too late in life to do this as it is and I want to make the most of it. Also an FYI, I was done as an outpatient so that may help if your surgeon does the same for your routine at home. I had surgery at 7:30am and was home by 1:26 pm. I had no post-op issues and while that isn't always the case for everyone, it really went great. I was tired but driving myself to the store 5 days post-op. The surgery itself is a really amazing process. The recovery takes time but has truly not been bad at all.

I am so so so angry

I also could not eat 7 ounces of burger at this point and I am 4 months post-op. Having said that, your husband could say that to you in a much more supportive way. I am sorry it was so rude for you. We are all going to make mistakes, the surgery does not make us perfect.

    Big Ole Thanks!

Congrats on your recovery! Keep up the great work!
  5. What are your concerns about the sleeve vs. the band? What was your reasoning for wanting the band? I personally chose the sleeve because I didn't want a foreign object placed inside me and I didn't want to have the adjustments having to be made on a regular basis. I also had read quite a bit about the slipping that can happen with the band and I only wanted to have surgery once. Your time out of work will depend on a few things. How quickly you recover from surgery and the type of activity your job requires. I took 11 days but have a desk job where I do walk around at times and really could have returned after a week. I recover pretty quickly and was off pain meds at day 3. I was still in the end grateful for the extra time to rest. You won't be able to lift and such after surgery for a bit so if you can have help with the kids that would be great but you will be back at it pretty quickly. Rest where you can and don't overdo it, you do need time to heal so take it if you can. If you have more questions you can always ask! Good luck!
  6. @@readyforthislifechange, would you mind sharing your stats as your profile is blank?
  7. @@BigTink2LilTink, I am allowed per surgeon and nutritonist to eat pork and red meat. All of our plans are so different, I just follow what I am instructed to do per my team and it is working. Agree as always with @@proudgrammy, we all have our opinions and you know that saying so enough said. Love your name by the way!
  8. As I stated, too high for me. Never said anything about you. Wow that's nuts. You're telling me there is not much difference. How many grams of sugar are in the McDonald's milkshake? Geez you need to chill out..I posted everything I didn't hide anything or try to sell anything. Look it up on my fitness pal when you enter it. The shake I mentioned had nutritional including fiber which most of us seem to not get. I'm not sensitive you came on this post with a negative attitude not even realizing that this is a healthy alternative. If you think a meal that has 375 calories a lot you're just plain crazy. It had tons of protein, very little sugar and fiber. Quite the opposite of a McDonald's shake. Again if it doesn't work for you just don't drink it. No one cares. It might work for someone else negative Nancy maybe you can sign yourself up to be the bariatric police. Seriously. I have never set myself to be the Bariatric Police...bahahaha I did say if you will go back and read that "other than the obvious nutrient differences" the shakes were not that different when it came to calories. So I did acknowledge the fact that yest the McDonalds shake is not a healthy option. It is you that needs to get the proverbial grip. Move on with your life and take a chill pill with your fabulous shake!
  9. As I stated, too high for me. Never said anything about you. Again said you were entitled but made a suggestion to help others not so inclined to research. Just stating facts not trying to be rude, seems you are a bit defensive and if I hurt your sensitivities I am sorry. I still stand by my statement that 375 as you say, 400 as I added is to much for one shake. A 12 oz McDonalds vanilla shake is : Calories 520 Total Fat 17g 26% Carbs 80g 27% Protein 12g Sodium 260mg 11% So other than the obvious nutrient differences, the calories are not really all that much of a savings or bang for the buck so to speak. Just keeping it real!
  10. @@BigTink2LilTink, I am only 4 months post-op and couldn't eat 1900 calories if I tried without making unhealthy choices. I can only eat 3/4 food per serving.
  11. Per my surgeon my goal at 4 months post op with exercise is to get to 900 calories per day. Per my nutritionist, same office, she is not a fan of subtracting fiber for net carbs so I don't. I am exactly where I need to be. As I said, for me, I don't want a 400 calorie shake. I drink one I make ever morning and it is only 175 calories. You quoted 50 g of Protein and it doesn't add up, also the body cannot absorb more than 30g at a time. Just be careful what you quote as fact here as some don't do the research and will just eat/drink what someone says. We have a responsibility to be accurate as well as supportive. You are always entitled to your opinion but when you posted your "shake", include the macros up front.
  12. 3/4 cup ice cream- 120 calories Protein 2g carbs 13g 1 cup Fairlife milk- 120 calories protein 13g carbs 6g 2 scoops publix organic vanilla whey protein powder- 160 calories protein 16g carbs 3g total- 400 calories!! protein 31g and carbs 22g That is unfortunately way too high for me. That is half my days calories and not enough nutritional value.

    Looking for support!

I also attend an in-person support group at my hospital. If there is one near you, you should go. You will meet pre-op people as well as post-op. You might even meet someone having surgery the same day as you and can make friends. I look forward to my monthly meeting. It is nice to see people's progress in person and share stories. It is nice support and also motivation! Good luck! You will do great!

Post-Op problems with (some) carbs, questions!

Sounds like a plan, I hope you tolerate them well!

Post-Op problems with (some) carbs, questions!

My NUT says toasting the bread changes the molecular structure and makes it more tolerable for the tummy. I abstain from all breads and rice, I just don't want the empty calories and I was a carbaholic before so that is a slippery slope for me so I choose to be free of temptation. I still eat burgers just no bun. I don't think there is any "damage" to the body per se but the bread can turn into a dough ball and cause major discomfort. Good luck with your choices!

    Inpatient or Outpatient

I had surgery at 7:30 am and was home at 1:26pm same day. I did great and never looked back. Do your prep before surgery so nothing needs to be done at home and you are not tempted to overdo it. Rest and recuperate but get up and move around as much as you can. You will do great!!

    disappointed with self

Agreed with @Rocket. 57 pounds is great now dig in. Get back to basics and get rid of temptation that might be around. Log everything and measure to the ounce. You've got this!! Good luck!

    Onederland

Congrats on your success!! Hoping to get there myself!
  19. Not crazy at all...it is amazing tho! Enjoy it and keep up the compliance. I had to do a 2 week pre-op diet of Protein shakes, sf pudding, light yogurt and Water. Week one post-op was 3 Protein Shakes a day with all the water I could do. Week 2-4 was soft foods (including eggs, flaky fish and deli chicken/turkey. One Protein shake a day and fluids. Week 5 was reintroducing regular foods slowly. No nuts til 3 months. Mine was relatively easy compared to some but I did tolerate everything well and have had no issues. 4 months post op and down 61 pounds since surgery and 91 total from pre-op to now.

    ALMOST ONE MONTH IN...

At one week out the hunger is probably in your head unless you are having acid reflux. I took otc meds for acid reflux for the first week, some take them for longer. Focus on getting in Protein for now and fluids. The rest will come as you are able to tolerate more. You definitely have to slow down and not eat so fast. Put your utensil down between bites, it will help. Good luck!

    Question about protein drinks

Every nutritionist is so different. Some are very strict and some not so much. I was on regular foods at 5 weeks out. I did one week Protein shakes after surgery. 4 weeks soft foods then week 5 I reintroduced regular foods slowly. I am sure they have their reasons, ask more questions?

    Surgery

Just know that the surgery is a tool and not necessarily the answer. You will still have to monitor what you eat and how much. You will forever have to take Vitamins. You will forever have to time it so you get your fluids in. You will have to commit to exercising. If you are committed to those things then I say do it!

    Had consultation yesterday

I had the sleeve done on 5/15/15 and stopped all blood sugar meds day of surgery. My blood sugar and A1C have been completely normal. I also have normal cholesterol levels now and am slowly decreasing my HBP meds.

    The sum of all fears

So sorry to hear about your situation. Maybe you can save up toward a self-pay price or could Mexico be a valid option. Good luck and keep abreast of any changes to your insurance at annual enrollment with your employer to see if there is another insurance option that does cover the surgery.
  25. Portion control is extremely important but carbs for me are a trigger. I am doing both. I eat low carb, high Protein. Seems to be working so far. Would love to hear the veteran's take on it.
