Not a fan of personal trainers. They are quick to show you the latest fad to get razor abs or muscle gainzzz! Or maybe the newest sport drank even. You are their customer, and an educated lifter is a customer lost. A coach is different as is a physical therapist. Their reputation is on the line for teaching things right. Bad thing about physical therapist is that they want to play it safe in the extreme. Problem with coaches is that they are insensitive to your personal challenges. lol, kind of a pick your poison situation.

It's not a tradional pyramid, no. You have the drecreasing rep but not the increasing weight. So you are still only working on endurance. Again, if that is what you are wanting, it's fine. But you could make more strength gains by lowering your sets and reps and raising your weight. And more importantly, don't use the leg extension machine. Ever. For any reason. Don't even look at it. If you want to work your legs, start squatting. That's the last I'll preach on it, promise.

OK, I am just getting some time to get back to this post. The routine you are describing is called a pyramid. I’ll quote the venerable Mark Rippetoe on this: In this case, Coach Rippetoe is describing a traditional pyramid routine. Traditionally starting with a lower weight and higher reps then moving up in weight and down in reps believing you are going to hit a 1 rep max (1RM) lift. As he points out though, this routine does not enable you to make strength gains at the 1RM level. This trains the body for endurance. If this is what you are shooting for, by all means continue. However, if you are trying to gain strength, you need to focus on higher weights for lower reps. Once again from coach Rippetoe: There is a picture associated with that last blurb, but it is in my book and I cannot put it in here. He describes it very well though. Now, to address the leg extension machine. Man... I hate to tell you this, but there is so much wrong with your routine it literally caused me to wince. Not because you are stupid or anything, but it reminded me of my earliest days of lifting. I'm on my phone right now and this post deserves a worthy reply. I will gather the info tomorrow and post again. On on the off chance I cannot post tomorrow, immediately stop doing the leg extensions! "Constipation" will give you 467. The search tool is better now than it used to be. To answer your question, it's not abnormal. It's pretty common. If you don't have a BM after a week, start with the laxatives/stool softeners. And talk to your Dr.

Boost Your Protein with Unflavored Protein Powder

The trick to mixing protein powders that have a tendency to clump is to think of gravy. Add your powder to a small cup and add a little water and stir. Add a little more water and stir some more. It should be a thick batter. Continue thinning it with water or milk until there are no lumps and then add that to your soups or whatever. As for peanut butter, as always - refer to your post-op diet papers or call your surgeon. Never trust strangers on the internet with your health. -

The smell is more common of an issue with bypass because of the amount of food that is not fully digested. Same reason BM's are so foul. As for the amount of gas, the best thing to do is lots of walking and slow methodical chewing when eating. The less air you swallow, the better.

Quest bars used to be very popular on this forum. Then about a year and half ago they changed their recipe and are now using a lot of corn based filler. Some people noted the taste was different. We don't keep them in my house because they are more expensive and my wife has a corn allergy.

Actually, your routine sounds like a pretty good one at your stage. You are hungry because your body is screaming for raw materials to start building. 1200 calories is too low for that much activity. I would add that you shouldn't fear fat, juust avoid the crappy kind. Milk, cheese, yogurt, etc... are good ideas if you are weightlifting. Not only does it have natures perfect blend of fat/carbs/protein, milk has naturally occuring growth hormone for, you know, growing muscles! Personally, I think you should be in the 1500-1800 calorie range. And eventually when/if your lifting gets to the 100+ lbs major lifts, you will be in the 2000-2500 range. My surgeon reviewed my diet logs and lifting diary and said he thinks I should go to 3500 and I told him it just wasn't possible. He's a lifter, so I think he was thinking with that part of his brain instead of the former fat guy just wants to be healthy!

It is completely normal to be tired, lose energy, and just be downright exhausted the first several months post op. Add to that exercise and your ass will be wiping out your tracks. I remember many times falling asleep in my chair at home by 7pm. Right now, your reduced caloric intake is literally being expended just to cover your routine activity. Anything above that is the calorie deficit that gives us the honeymoon phase of weightloss. This is why it is so difficult to build muscle early on. Now, if you are going to be working out (especially if with high intensity) you are going to need carbs. It's just that simple. I know it goes against the bariatric diet mantra of protein first, but it's the truth. It is also why I don't recommend high intensity workouts so soon after surgery. I can eat a half cup of oats 20 minutes before lifting because I know from experience that I am going to hit my 150-200 gram protein goal. But if you are still spotty on hitting that goal, you may not want to risk it. Learn to love grilled or baked fish. Tuna packets are great sources too, but you should only have about 5 oz of tuna a week because of the mercury content. Most fish is basically pure protein. Oats and shredded wheat are good grains for carbs. Basically eat out of necessity and not for flavor and variety. That comes much later. As for my fluid intake recommendation, if you are awake and it has been 30 minutes since you've eaten, you should be sipping some water. Never pop, diet or otherwise. Again, MY RECCOMMENDATION, anyone else can do whatever they want.

You might want to mention that unflavored does not mean no flavor. It means that nothing was added to the powder to mask the taste of the whey. -

Big fan of squats and dead lifts. I know it is because prior to surgery my back was in constant pain and my left leg was being dragged behind me because of nerve pain. Just being able to do the motion of a squat or pick something up off the floor is novel. Doing it with heavy weights is surreal. @dusky goddess - what type of squats are you doing? -
There is definitely a science to lifting/diet/sleeve. Wish I could say I have it figured out, but it is always being tweaked. You say you are lifting, what are you doing specifically? 1200 calories of what? When are you eating? If your surgery date is correct, you are only about 6 months post-op. Right now (only in my opinion) I would be focusing on losing the weight and trying to keep what muscle you have. You just cannot take in enough protein/calories to start building a lot of mass. Establishing the routine and habit is the most important thing. I used to lift everyday, but once I started getting into heavier weights, I needed more recovery time. So now I am down to 3 times a week. The other days I just try to get my steps in to maintain my weight.

Aside from the fact that I thought they tasted awful, I mean gelatinous cough syrup/jolly rancher hybrid really really bad, their primary source of protein is collagen, then whey, and lastly casein. Collegen protein is technically a protein yes, but it isn't much more than a nitrogen donor. Casein is a decent protein though. Whey is still the reigning king for muscle mass retention and growth. Even with that low opinion of the protein shots, they are still better than genepro. As a list, I would go like this: Whey Casein Beef or Bone powder Soy Egg (the powder, not the real thing. Real eggs rock) Pea Collagen Toenails Dirt Velveeta Cheese or aerosol cheese spread Genepro -

If you are only going to be having sips instead of cups, you should be fine either route you decide. Isn't Pass Over around August? If you are 10 months now, you'll be well past the year mark by then. The alcohol will not be a risk by that time. It may burn a little like normal alcohol, but not the stinging discomfort of a new patient. And the sugar content of grape juice would not likely cause you dumping syndrome.
