  1. When it is appropriate to do so, you can on occasion enjoy a drink and consume alcohol in moderation. The calories are empty. A few people have transfer addictions to alcohol since they are no longer using food to deal with those feelings. It could lead to other, old, unwanted behaviors. Many people find that the alcohol's effects are stronger post surgery, so be careful how much you consume if you are driving afterwards. BUT FOR THE SAKE OF GOD AND EVERYTHING THAT IS HOLY, IF YOU HAVE A MIXED DRINK AND USE A STRAW, DON'T POST IT ON THE SURGICAL WEIGHT LOSS FORUMS THAT YOU USED A STRAW!
  2. These "straws with girth" that you speak of to drink your beverages with, do you place one hand behind the back of your head pushing you downwards when you are using them? Inquiring minds would like to know.

  5. You couldn't burst into flames by using a straw, you were drinking a liquid which would have doused it.
  6. @@VSGAnn2014 Drinking straws CAN give you an ulcer! Here's how. Drink through a straw. Post about it on the internet in surgical weight loss forums. Get really aggravated at the militant people that chastise you for drinking with a straw. Create extra stomach acid due to that aggravation. Develop an ulcer.

    HELP! Sleeve vs RNY

I used similar rationale based upon my medical history and gave the same thoughts (along with reviewing studies and clinical data from reputable sources) I never thought of that one though. Interesting concept. To the OP: You still have time. Either decision is good, each has its pros and cons. Research, research, research (oh yeah, did I forget to mention research) and discuss it further with your surgeon so the correct decision is made for your specific needs and medical history.
  10. I don't buy these shakes, but could you get a 6oz drink container (or as close to 6oz) and pour 1/2 of one into it for two servings? Or, 2 small containers for 3 servings of approx. 4oz each.
  11. I shall confer with him myself, then we can compare notes. He is currently chilling in my kitchen. I hope it isn't "Dr. Pepper TEN", because per the manufacturer, you aren't allowed to have it! Who was the marketing genius that came up with this ad? (At a board meeting) CEO: "Let's see, our profits are down, what can we do to affect our revenue?" Over Compensated Marketing Genius: "I know, let's try to alienate 50% of the population from our product" I can understand a vasectomy clinic coming up with a slogan "Not For Women" or even Tampax coming up with a slogan "Not For Men". I know it was an attempt on their part as humor and I guess a little controversy discussed in the masses is free publicity, but I don't know if they thought this one fully through.
  12. I wonder what the famous medical weight loss professional "Diet Dr. Pepper" has to say about all this bantering? I may even consult his expertise when I go grocery shopping later this morning.

Why do I find this so funny?

OK this made me nearly spit yogurt out my nose. I am glad this made you smile and took your time out to respond. That made me smile (needed it today). I am so thankful you weren't eating lentil Soup when that happened.
  15. This is not a study, only a recommendation by the ASMBS for certain surgery types and the introduction of certain foods during the post op diet phases. It is only an excerpt of a very lengthy article. I am not going to argue this point, everyone needs to do what they feel is best for them based upon their surgeon's and nutritionist's recommendations. There are polar opposite opinions by the medical professionals on carbonation stretching your stomach, so it is not something that they seem to agree upon. I guess err on the side of caution if you want to feel safe. This document is intended to provide an overview of the elements that are important to the nutritional care of the bariatric patient. It is not intended to serve as training, a statement of standardization, or scientific consensus. It should be viewed as an educational tool to increase awareness among medical professionals of the potential risk of nutritional deficiencies common to bariatric surgery patients. The goal of this document is to provide suggestions for conducting a nutrition assessment, education, supplementation, and follow-up care. These suggestions are not mandates and should be treated with common sense. When needed, exceptions should be made according to individual variations and the evaluation findings. It is intended to present a reasonable approach to patient nutrition care and at the same time allow for flexibility among individual practice-based protocols, procedures, and policies....... .....Similar to AGB and RYGB, programs offering DS/BPD procedures reported that the clear liquid diet phase is employed for one to two days after surgery. The full liquid phase was most commonly noted to last >10 to 14 days, while the pureed phase was reported to be >14 days. Most programs report that a ground texture phase is not utilized. The soft diet phase was reported to last >14 days. Finally, those programs offering DS/BPD most often reported advancing patients to a regular diet five to eight weeks after surgery. **Foods commonly restricted ** The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery members reported in the survey that patients were instructed to avoid or delay the introduction of several foods as noted in [Table 9](#tbl9). Research to support these clinical practices is limited, especially with regard to caffeine and carbonation. Practitioners might theorize that certain foods and beverages will cause gastric irritation, outlet obstruction, intolerance, delayed wound healing, or alter the weight loss course; however, much of the information is anecdotal and lacks empirical evidence. In addition, although practitioners recommend that patients avoid or delay the introduction of these foods, little information is known as to whether patients actually comply with these recommendations and whether those who do not comply have altered outcomes or clinical histories. One retrospective survey suggested that many patients are noncompliant with diet and exercise recommendations [[174]](#bib174). food type Recommendation Sugar, sugar-containing foods, concentrated sweets Avoid Carbonated beverages Avoid/delay fruit juice Avoid High-saturated fat, fried foods Avoid Soft “doughy” bread, Pasta, rice Avoid/delay Tough, dry, red meat Avoid/delay Nuts, popcorn, other fibrous foods Delay Caffeine Avoid/delay in moderation Alcohol Avoid/delay in moderation The article: https://asmbs.org/resources/integrated-health-nutritional-guidelines

    Did I have surgery?

Did they go in and have to abort the VSG due to something they found? If so, they would have told you. Request your hospital records from 2013.

    Forks over Knives

Look up how much protein is in Plants. It is a lot more than meat & milk, plus plant protein will not cause cancer. Remember where do animal's get protein? Yep PLANTS! The protein is not a problem. Ever meet anyone sick from not enough protein. They marketed this to get us to eat meat & milk. It worked. Somehow the rest of the world get there protein with no issues. Jack There are some very valid points you make. But if you look at the teeth of humans, we evolved to be omnivores. Animals have specialized teeth. Look at what cows and horses eat, and how they eat and chew. Humans have teeth for grinding up food but also for ripping and tearing flesh. Millions of years of evolution can't be wrong. I am not saying you are wrong, it is probably not a bad thing to reduce the amount of animal Proteins in our diet. But (I am not going to look this up) are there other benefits to a omnivore vs a herbivore diet that humans need such as certain amino acids, etc. that maybe a balanced plant based diet might not be able to replicate? This will probably light a fire under the backsides of some vegetarians. I am not criticizing your lifestyle, that is your choice. I just will remain an omnivore but maybe with less animal based protein.

Plain water in larger amounts consumed over a shorter period of time will give me a slight "fuzzy" feeling, where flavored water or a different zero calorie beverage of an equal amount won't. 25. @@PinkPolkadot619 "....I'm curious.......... Have you found ONE doctor that has said its okay? Or even recommend, I haven't seen anyone ever post that. That is the reason people are posting here." My surgeon and nutritionist allow diet soda within moderation at the appropriate stage. My surgeon's head nurse even scoffs at the idea carbonation will stretch your stomach. But given that, they prefer Water or water with some flavoring or infused water over diet sodas. There is no nutritional value to the diet sodas and the artificial sweeteners and other additives are really not that good for us. Also, diet colas can also be acidic and/or contain caffeine; caffeine should be kept to a reasonable quantity. Some doctors are afraid that other "old habits" could be associated with the drinking of diet sodas that may also creep back in. Bottom line. Everyone is different and need to base these decisions on what is best for them. Personally, I am trying to drink less diet sodas and more water due to all of the added chemicals and artificial sweeteners (I try to buy only decaffeinated soda) -unfortunately, I prefer it with a flavoring that contains artificial sweeteners and additives, but I am trying to drink more plain water. Plain tap water is healthier (not counting areas of Flint, Michigan)
