    Protein intake

At five weeks out I was able to eat 3-4 oz of protein from something that had a mother three times a day. I weighed every single protein on a kitchen scale. I did feel restriction at 4 oz. no snacks rest of day. Getting in all my water was a challenge at 5 weeks. Now, eight weeks out, I have added 1/2C vegetables once a day and 1/2C berries once a day to the three 4oz protein meals. I have gone to a restaurant several times and try to order off the appetizer menu but still try and eyeball 4 oz. no dairy yet and no alcohol or sugar. Water is easy to get in now. Walk three miles seven days a week but break that up into half in morning and half in evening.

    Support Groups!

I never hid what I wanted to do from family and friends. Most were against the surgery but were supportive of my effort to lose weight. Now 8 weeks out they still think the decision was a drastic action but ask about the progress. I knew that surgery was my chance to conquer the weight issue because I had failed at every other diet over 40 years. I still feel supported from family and friends with the realization that they don't have my history and that they would never consider surgery as an option for them. I am me and they are them.
  3. My Bariatric nurse is a bypass patient several years out from surgery. She does the three month checkups and discussion groups before we see the doctor. She admitted she fell off the wagon and gained 45 lbs last year. She described how she went back to the basics and started with the routine we all went through post op - liquids, puréed food, soft protein, 4oz solid protein, 1/2 C veg, 1/2 C fruit, no snacks, getting in her water, eliminating caffeine and alcohol to reset her body and her mind. She admitted it was very difficult because the rest of the family was eating a typical diet and she had to adapt what they were eating to her own needs. I guess it might be helpful to get back into a support group or visit your nutritionist to help reset your motivation. We all know we have a tool for weight loss but we have to allow the tool to work and to get back on the plan for a healthy reset.

How soon can I move around?

The evening after surgery they had me up and walking the halls and each day of hospitalization I tried to increase the time I walked. The day I came home from the hospital I walked a mile. Luckily the walking prevented me from suffering the terrible gas pains that others describe here. I drove a car as soon as I was 24 hours off the pain medication which was day three at home after being released from the hospital. No lifting of course but I encourage you to move as much as possible several times a day. You will feel better if you do.

    Body temperature

In the pre op diet and the first month post op I was cold much of the time. I would be bundled up in a blanket most evenings. After I started solid food the cold spells gradually went away.

    7 weeks- no loss

Entirely normal I think. Keep trying to get in 4 oz of Protein from something that had a mother three times a day. Drink at least 64 oz of Water a day and try walking 60 minutes a day even if you have to spread the walking into 20 minute segments three times a day. Eventually your body will adjust and you will start losing again. I am 8 weeks out and I still can't have dairy so no yogurt, sugar free pudding, limited cheese, and other dairy products like sour cream, cream, milk, etc. Try not to snack between meals. Take your meals at a regular schedule about 4-5 hours apart. I am eating 1/2 C cooked or raw vegetables at one meal and 1/2 C berries or other fruit (no bananas) at one other meal.

    Turkey Neck!

Can you share the approximate total cost for your procedures and were they done in the U.S.? I am only 8 weeks out but the turkey neck really bothers me.
  8. Was allowed leafy vegetables and uncooked and cooked vegetables at 7 weeks out. Amount was and continues to be 1/2C once a day in addition to 4oz of protein.

    Protein

8 weeks out and no snacks allowed. Surgeon wants the protein primarily from real food but will allow one protein shake per day as a substitute for one meal. Luckily I can get in 4 oz of protein per meal and 1/2 C of fruit added at one meal and 1/2C low carb vegetables added to another meal. I feel very little restriction but continue to lose 3-4 lbs a week. I do walk three miles seven days a week however.

    Anybody eat Fruit?

Starting my 8 th week out from surgery and now get to add 1/2 C of fruit once a day. It's strawberry season so I am looking forward to adding that to my breakfast.
  11. I was told at the pureed stage that spices were fine but sauces were a no no. Actually that advice is repeated by my clinic coordinator for every phase up through the first year. If the Protein is served in a sauce try and scrape it away as much as possible. Avoid red sauces all together because the prepared ones contain sugar. If you want to make a tomato sauce at home just be sure to not add sugar to the ingredients.

    Is it odd

I HAVE to rely on a kitchen scale to weigh EVERY Protein serving. I was told by my doctor NOT to exceed 4 ounces of protein at any one meal. At seven weeks out (sleeved 4/13/15) I am allowed 1/2 C cooked vegetables ONCE a day and never to be a high carb vegetable like peas. Next week I get to add 1/2 C fresh fruit but not at the same meal as the vegetables. I feel little restriction as well. I know without the kitchen scale I would eat too much for my eyeball judgement is not very accurate about portion size.

    For sleeve veterans

Seven weeks out. I don't feel much restriction. I have to weigh all my Protein or I know I'd eat too much. The lack of restriction REALLY concerns me. If it were not for the kitchen scale I'd be in big trouble. Usually two eggs scrambled or a Premier Protein shake for breakfast. lunch is usually 4 ounces of cooked chicken, tunafish, grilled turkey burger, left over hamburger from night before. dinner is 4 ounces of protein from something that had a mother and 1/2 Cup of cooked vegetables. By my calculation I'm taking in between 550-800 calories a day. I'm sure I'm getting in 60+ grams of protein. At night my treat is a cup of sugar free Jello. No dairy, nuts, Peanut Butter, almond butter, bread, Pasta, yogurt, sugar, or other carbs. Next week 1/2 cup of fresh fruit is added once a day but not at the same meal as the 1/2 cup of vegetables. I'm getting in 60-80 ounces of Water each day and walking three miles seven days a week. I don't feel strong hunger pains and don't have heartburn so no antacids or Pepcid is needed. I do take three bariatric Vitamins a day and one Co-Q 10 capsule a day. I know I could eat more and so I've conditioned myself to weigh every ounce of protein.
  14. Can you have any vegetables yet? Tonight we had a delicious supper with mashed cooked cauliflower, cooked ground turkey, cheese, and cooked bacon pieces in a light sauce. I am 7 weeks out and can't have any dairy yet so yogurt is out.
  15. Seven weeks out. Sleeved 4/13 of this year. I have been lucky I guess for hunger issues have never been severe. Honestly my biggest fear is not having what I thought would be a real restriction. I could still eat more that I am allowed and thus have forced myself to weigh everything I eat with a kitchen scale. I don't suffer from heartburn and haven't needed to take Pepsid or some other antacid. I think that is because I don't eat any processed foods. Everything I eat is cooked at home, weighed, and calories and Protein content are monitored. I eat 4 ounces of protein three times a day and none of that protein is from processed foods like lunchmeat, hotdogs, etc. Breakfast is usually a Premier Protein shake or two eggs scrambled. lunch is 4-5 hours later usually consists of 4 ounces of tuna fish, cooked chicken, a left over hamburger from the night before, or some other protein from something that had a mother. dinner is 4-5 hours later and again 4 oz of protein plus 1/2 cup of vegetables. I'm getting in 64-80 ounces of Water which really cuts any hunger I might have between meals. Next week I get to start 1/2 cup of fresh fruit. I think getting in the water, exercising 30-60 minutes a day and avoiding dairy, caffein, processed foods, carbs, sugar, helps stop excessive hunger. I've lost 42 lbs and am thrilled with my progress. I did have a stall at three weeks and had to go back to liquid Protein shakes twice a day to break the stall but since then the weight has come off at about 3-4 lbs per week.

    New to this

I got lots of looks as well when I went to my first meeting. No one said anything but I'm sure they thought what is he doing here. My BMI was 38 but I had high blood pressure, cholesterol and knee problems as well as sleep apnea issues. I had failed at numerous diets over 40 years. I could lose weight but it always came back plus even more pounds. I did this for me. I wanted a better quality of life and I wanted to live longer. This surgery is my last hope. So far I am totally satisfied with my decision. best of luck to you. Listen to yourself and actualize your goals.

    Regrets?

We all feel regret at some point. Follow your doctor's plan and everything will get better. Walk as much as possible, get your fluids in , avoid eating too quickly, and let your stomach tell you how it is doing. It will let you know ahead of the tilt mark when to stop eating. Weigh proteins with a kitchen scale for every meal. When eating out look at the appetizer menu for your meal. Don't give yourself permission to snack. Follow the program and you will do great!

    Body Mass Visualizer

That is so cool! My goal is 30 lbs less than the surgeon's. I am still overweight at the surgeon's goal of 200 lbs. dreaming of being 170!

    Regrets?

Regrets happened the moment I awoke from surgery in recovery. I couldn't swallow and became panicked until recovery staff gave me a little water. The evening after surgery I wondered why I ever thought this was a good idea and then I was forced to get up and start walking - first out of the room and then eventually around the wing. Things improved rapidly thereafter and other than discomfort from the big incision I felt better each day. Now, starting my seventh week post op, I feel wonderful and am eating 4 oz of protein three times a day. Surgery was the best decision I ever made!
  20. Retried beans were not in my plan until I reached the full protein week which was week four. I think you started the beans way too early.

When will the main incision STOP hurting!?

Mine went away about 12 days after surgery.

    Any Illinois Sleevers?

I'm doing great! Beginning week seven post op and have been successful with following the prescribed diet, even while eating in restaurants and other people's homes. Am averaging three pounds a week in weight loss and trying to get in 3 miles walking six days a week, sometimes seven. The weather isn't helping much.

    Afraid of refusal!

I went in with a BMI of 38 but with three co-morbities. I was less than 100 lbs overweight and over the typical age limit for surgery. I felt totally comfortable with the surgeon's assessment and he did have concerns because of being over age 70. However I had a very successful surgery, an uncomplicated recovery, and I think I added years to my life and even more importantly an opportunity for a better quality of life.
  24. Sleeved in April of this year so I am five weeks out. I was told specifically the advantages and disadvantages of both bypass and sleeve. I was not a candidate for the bypass so the sleeve was my only choice. I was told the responsibility was on me to make this journey a success. I was also told ahead of time to expect a 1-2 lb weight loss per week on average. Having averaged 3 lbs a week in five weeks to me is acceptable. I don't expect to reach my goal until April of 2016. I'm happy with the surgery and comfortable with my progress. I feel in control for the first time in years regarding food.
