  1. I don't think I will end up in a bikini without plastic surgery. Not due to weight loss but from the two babies I had. As I lose weight things are coming along nicely but the belly area was ruined long before I had the excess weight.
  2. My BMI was 40 no complications so far. I had surgery May 29th. I'm 30. Also, I didn't feel like I had surgery until I dumped for the first time on chicken salad. It was awful. I thought the same thing about the barium too

    Gum

    I was told no gum.
  4. I think that people who have more weight to lose will lose more than that 1/3. For example. I had RNY at 238 lbs. If I lost 1/2 of my body weight it would be too much. However, if I went in at 600 lbs losing more than 50% would not be u heard of. Considering surgery can be done with BMI's under 40 I see where they get the averages from. An average is just that, an average. You can be on the high or low end. I would work as hard as I can, and not worry about it too much.

Anyone else's post op like this?

My surgeon's team does clear liquids only in hospital. Full liquids for week 1 then move into purees start of week 2. Then soft foods week 3 for 6 weeks. I have had no issues with this method. Follow your surgeon's plan. There are great differences in plans so follow yours.

    Losing too much weight

People going to talk. That's what they do, but we have to keep our eye's on the prize, as they say. At this point 3 weeks postop there is nothing I can do about it. As of today I am down 26.5 pounds and I am feeling good. The sleeve is a better choice if you want to lose less weight. I had metabolic issues among other problems, and it would have never worked for me though. I figure after I have another child or two and tone up I wont look so emancipated. Good luck on your surgeries and weight loss ladies.

    Losing too much weight

This was a concern of mine before I had surgery too. I talked to my Bariatric team about it. I had RNY surgery this past May. And with RNY there's really nothing you can do. You will lose what you will lose. And it's better to be healthy than unhealthy. I found that hard to swallow, but I chose health. Just 10 years ago I was a size 0 115 lbs and people talked about how I was too skinny all the time. I didn't want to be like that again. But after I weighed the pros and cons and looked at what I wanted to do in life I knew surgery was right for me even if it meant I would be that small again. I totally understand though. Its something I worried about. I'm hoping to land around 165 but it'll probably be lower and I will just have to live with that.
  9. The hospital gave me a pill crusher. Prior to surgery my program has us meet with the pharmacist to convert medications that can be converted to liquid. The rest we were told to crush for 1 yr.
  10. I had RNY done with Mayo Clinic. And their philosophy is to just get moving. They say exercise in some way for lifelong success. However, they admit it will have little effect on weight loss. Nutrition is a major part of it especially in that first year. They tell you to exercise because when the effects of surgery wear off they want you to have created good habits. Exercise can keep the weight off later in addition to nutrition. After the first year I would agree with your 80/20 ratio. Think about people who have surgery and are basically immobile due to knee problems etc. these people still lose weight based off of nutrition alone. I was told that surgery resets the body's set point for weight and the new set point is decided without our help. So stick to nutrition and exercise the best way you can for lifelong success. Good topic
  11. I changed to a Nuvaring. I was told the pills may not absorb right. The shot may contribute to weight gain. I had surgery so I could have a baby after the 18 month wait so I did not want something that lasted as long as an IUD/Mirena.

    African American RNY Sisters

Hi. I just had RNY May 29th. Working on getting my fluids in. I feel OK though. Tired though.
  13. I had surgery this morning. My nausea is still not under control. Its the pain meds I think. They gave me zofren. Its not working all that great. When I try to walk I'm so nauseous I have to lie back down. And the gas pain is horrible so I need to walk. I am kind of disappointed in the nursing staff here. They are not addressing my concerns. I'm at Mayo Clinic in Florida.

    Argument with NP over Coffee

My program allows decaf coffee as long as you get all your fluids in. They don't count coffee as a fluid
  15. Today is day 10 of my 2 week liquid diet and I have lost 10.5 lbs. Haven't cheated. Surgery is Friday

    Afraid of refusal!

I am a 40 BMI as well. My family and friends all say that I don't look like I need surgery as well. And my reply is "it will probably be too late by the time I look like I need surgery". Anyway, all my doctors and nurses are professional and they look at it from a BMI standpoint. They understand. I wouldn't worry.
  17. I was told I can have a piece of lean Protein as needed, but I was worried it would make me hungrier if I did.
  18. I have to be at the hospital at 5:30 am. I'm the first up that day. I'm anxious too. The day can't come fast enough
  19. I have surgery scheduled for May 29th. I'm on optifast shakes. I'm taking it one day at a time. Everyday I feel a little better. The doctors office gave me different recipes for the shakes Using ice and different sugar free extracts. I can't wait for surgery day to get here
  20. Best of luck! I have RNY May 29th
  21. I was told that the weight that the submit your approval at is the only weight that matters. I am at a 40 bmi and worried about the same thing. I wasn't required to lose weight before hand, but I was worried about pre-op diet so I asked.

    moving.

I started in Tricare north region then moved to South region I have Tricare standard. I changed from a clinic in Illinois to Mayo Clinic in Florida. I just had all my records sent over and picked up from there. I was approved in the South region then moved back to the North region. Tricare told me as long as I have surgery where I was approved I will be OK. I will still have surgery at Mayo Clinic in Florida where I was approved even though I now live in the North region. This is how Tricare standard works though. Prime is another type of beast
  23. I have a 2 week pre-op diet. BMI 40. I was told to shrink the liver. The risk of surgery being an open one increases if fatty liver is in the way. I do think this is very individual and varies from person to person. I met a lady at the same clinic who had to do a 1 month liquid diet. So I think it is very individual.
  24. I chose RNY because I needed the metabolic fix. I am pre diabetic (PCOS w/ insulin resistance) and it has been proven to resolve insulin issues. Also, RNY has more published research than sleeve, and a longer proven track record. Research also shows that those that have the RNY surgery lose more weight than those that have the VSG surgery. And lastly I think dumping syndrome will keep me honest and on the right track.
  25. This is my day one of pre op diet. Crystal light and sf jello has helped so far. I can't wait until day 14 gets here
