2 Days Post Open Severe Nausea
ssourgirl replied to ssourgirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thanks everyone! Our first full day home and she's doing well. She's still on TPN (IV nutrients) and eating a few bites a day. They say once she can get up to eating 800 calories, she can be taken off the TPN. Since she's 6 weeks out from the sleeve, she can eat regular foods. We're taking that slow though, I don't want to risk more nausea. Does introducing different foods sometimes cause nausea and/or stomach weirdness in normal sleeve patients? I think she's scared to eat much for fear of bringing back the nausea and vomiting full time. Should she expect some sort of discomfort while eating? -

Good news, we are home! She's still a little nauseated but able to eat a little bit. She's not eating or drinking much so they have set up home health to continue IV nutrition for a bit. We are super glad to be home! -

@@ShellMilliner Thank you! She's doing really well so far today. The nausea has diminished a great deal! She has even taken a few bites of food today and is drinking without nausea and vomiting! YAY! She's still on IV TPN but they are talking about discharging her tomorrow (she will still have IV at home until she can fully sustain food and drink.) I'm hopeful for the first time in a long, longggg time! . -

6 weeks Post Op today. She had the 2nd surgery on the kidney stone today and they successfully got it! It had traveled back up towards the kidney so that thing was not going to come out on its own, that's for sure. It remains to be seen how/if this will affect the nausea and vomiting. I'm praying it was the cause of it all and she'll be nausea and vomit free after today! Thanks all for the thoughts and prayers. -

@cc4math @newbeginning77@desertgirl_74@Chrystee Thank you all! It really helps to have this support. Day 41 Post Op. She continued to do pretty well yesterday until she had a shower about 9:30pm. After the shower she started blacking out and threw up afterwards. Sigh. Well at least she got 24 hours in without vomiting. I'm still taking it as progress. She's still asleep this morning so I'm not sure how she's doing today but I think she's still better. -

@@LSF Thanks for checking on her! They started her on IV nutrition last night (TPN.) She'd been vomiting over 20 times a day but so far, for some reason she's actually feeling better today! She is less nauseated and she's not vomited in over 24 hours. She was even able to sip some liquids today. They're baffled why the TPN would help with the nausea. I'm baffled why it took them so long to give them to her! We've been here 15 days, day 16 today. Yes, the surgery is scheduled for Thursday and we can possibly go home on Friday depending on how she's doing. We can do the TPN IV at home until she is able to start eating on her own. -

Yes, except you have to be careful they don't then blame the nausea and vomiting on the hysteria or "anxiety." They've tried that already! -

@@LSF Thanks, LSF. Unfortunately she's still feeling horrible and has been vomiting/dry heaving around the clock. It's worse at night so she gets to bed around 3am most nights then she's up every hour or two. They still haven't started TPN Nutrients although they put the PICC line in yesterday morning. I don't understand why it's taking them so long to get them started. So she's almost gone 6 weeks without any nutrients at all except the IV fluids. She's weak, exhausted, constantly on the verge of vomiting, not sleeping well and today the bariatric surgeon had the gall to ask why she was asleep at 11:30am. Really?? -

@@newbeginning77 possibly the e-coli but they're saying that just started because of the antibiotics she got last week. Not uncommon. They've set the date to go back in and get the stone for Thurdsay morning. I guess that means we're in the hospital until at least next week. -

@@samuelsmom thanks for checking in No, she's not able to eat anything at all. She still can't keep down any liquids. They are probably putting in a PICC line today to start getting nutrients in through IV. They had a psychologist come to talk to her and teach her how to take deep breaths if she starts feeling anxious. She's still vomiting (violent dry heaving really) several times a day. I'm hanging in there. Luckily i'm able to work from the hospital so that takes my mind off of things and I'm not losing pay and in turn, my job. That's all a single mom needs! Last night I posted on Facebook how nice this "All-Inclusive Resort" is in Austin. They have room service, valet parking, round the clock care and even daily housekeeping. It's like a vacation. Ha! Not. Oh well, trying to make lemonade out of lemons. -

@@BLERDgirl according to the doctor, she had some antibiotic resistant e-coli in her urine and an apparent UTI or Kidney infection that also might be resistant so this is the only antibiotic they can use and it doesn't come in IV. I find it hard to believe there isn't and IV medication for this. -

We're still in the hospital. She's taking Protonix IV for antacid. They started her on IV antibiotics for UTI and then today he said he wanted to change to a stronger antibiotic because they found e-coli. WTF? The new antibiotic is oral and it makes her vomit of course. -

@@RNYGal He initially said two weeks from the first time he tried. So...next Friday. They did an upper GI scope today and everything looks good with the sleeve and esophagus so they've ruled out any issues with that. They want her to talk to a psychologist now. Seriously? I highly doubt this is psychosomatic. But hey, we'll play their game and she can talk to psych. He wants to "rule out any psychological causes." -

@@newbeginning77 Thank you! I hope yours goes more smoothly! It's true what she's going through is rare but it DOES happen. Just because they don't know why doesn't mean they shouldn't try to figure out just exactly what is going on. I get more and more disgusted with the medical field. The Bariatric Surgeon has now consulted a GI Specialist, who is going to do a scope tomorrow. He said he doesn't expect that anything will come from it but he wants to rule everything out to be certain. So, another procedure and we'll see what happens next. That stone needs to come out. Well, we are still here. She's getting more and more depressed by the day. This is really hard on her. Still super nauseated. Bariatric surgeon said the barium swallow study looks normal, he can't understand the nausea, he asked me today if it could be that she's just depressed? "When I see her she's looking like she doesn't have the will to live." So he was asking if the nausea is basically related to depression and anxiety. Typical, when all else fails, blame the patient. I'm not impressed nor am I hopeful. Hell YES she looks depressed and like she doesn't have the will to live. She's been in pain and vomiting and hasn't eaten for FIVE WEEKS. SHE HAS NO LIFE BECAUSE OF THIS VOMITING AND NAUSEA. Bright blue vomit bag is permanently attached to her hand. -

No, she's been vomiting this morning, well dry heaves. Nausea is back with full vengeance. Pain not much better. The Director came by to see me today and I gave her the entire detailed story, she took detailed notes, asked good questions, was appropriately aghast and profusely apologetic about the doctor and she was filing the complaint with the folks above her as well (I forget who.) She is having them contact me and marched off to assure that this doctor was off her case and a new one assigned stat. She even asked about why he took her off the IV pain medication and put her on Norco if she was still so nauseated. He did finally order her back on IV pain meds yesterday after I was complaining to the nurses and her pain was unmanageable.
