  1. I think the whole idea of a supervised diet is a farce. What exactly does it prove to the insurance company on whether or not they should pay for your surgery? Luckily I'm large enough to have this supervised diet waived. The only time my size has gone in my favor.

    Fatty Liver?

My primary care doctor had a blood test done and determined from that I had a fatty liver. The surgeon will probably know by the blood work. I have to imagine that 99% of obese people will have a larger liver than normal weight people so it can just be assumed.
  3. I'm having a devil of a time just scheduling a psych evaluation. My surgeon gave me 5 doctors to call. One doesn't even do bariatric psych evaluations anymore. One isn't accepting new patients. One doesn't answer the phone. The other two make me leave voicemail and never call back. How can I find one who will assist me?
  4. What are the advantages to getting surgery if after a year you will basically be back to where you were?
  5. I have read time and again that the changes are mental, so why exactly should one get the surgery and what is it going to do for someone 1, 5, or 10 years down the road?

    Gallstones

I haven't had weight loss surgery yet but I have had my gallbladder removed. I developed a gallstones because I lost a lot of weight in a short time. I went a year with gallbladder attacks because I kept getting diagnosed as having indigestion. It wasn't until a gallstone got lodged in my bile duct and I got jaundice until they finally diagnosed it. Due to the rapid weight loss that usually accompanies weight loss surgery, you're probably at a high risk to develop gallstones. Personally I would just want it gone.
  7. My whole life I grew up living in fear. We lived in a bad neighborhood and young males were killed frequently. The sound of a pop or firecracker would make me dive to the floor. Spent a lot of time indoors because I was afraid to go outside. Probably how my weight gain started. Also find this walking down the street thing interesting. Here it is generally considered safer to walk close to the street or even in the street.
  8. Both hospitals are pretty close to each other. A little surprised St John rated higher since it seems to have a worse reputation. That may be more perception since it's in a poor area and Beaumont is in a wealthy neighborhood. Kind of favoring St John since it is a center of excellence and has a dedicated bariatric section. My surgeon is also the head of laparoscopic surgery at St John so he may even prefer St John. I'll inquire about the anesthesiologist when I go on my appointment.
  9. I am a surgical first assist, and have help many surgeons with these procedures. Besides your surgeon, 2nd would be a great anesthesia provider, they are very important in any procedure, but especially this one because they are controlling the tubing that is put into the stomach for your surgeon to mark were he will staple. Next the hospital, look up hospital leap frog scores, it compares hospitals scores for safety, patient care, and infection rates Sent from my XT1254 using the BariatricPal App This is interesting. St John scored an A and Beaumont a B overall. How do I chose an anesthesia provider or how do I know who it is?
  10. Never heard of this stuff until I read this. Picked some up at Walmart today. Just poured a little out and added some Water. Tasted pretty good. I'll use it in a shake here shortly.
  11. This is good to hear. I have BCBS of Michigan and have a BMI over 50. My first appointment is April 25th. They made it sound like I would be on the table in 4 to 6 weeks.
  12. I started changing my eating habits and exercising in preparation for a sleeve. I started eating three meals a day and no snacking in between. Each meal is high Protein and average about 60-80 grams of protein. The weight is dropping off and my appetite has been curbed somewhat so it has me second guessing. I've been down this road before having lost a lot of weight. Don't want to full into a trap of losing and then gaining and being set back another 10 years.
  13. I'm not going to tell anyone. I do have to tell some people why I'm going to the hospital for surgery. I'm going to tell them it is to repair my hiatal hernia which is true. Just leave out the sleeve part.

    Anesthesia Questions.

I had gallbladder surgery where I needed general anesthesia. Haven't gotten my sleeve yet. Can't tell you how they administered it. Last thing I remember was being wheeled into the operating room. Don't remember getting on the table. Woke up in the recovery room. Was a little confused at first. Didn't know what was going on. No nausea. I did have pain in my left shoulder the first night. I was thinner and younger then so I worry sometimes about going under now but probably not worth worrying about.
  15. St John's is definitely a larger hospital. It's also the default hospital fro emergencies and traumas. The Beaumont is in a wealthy neighborhood and caters to more wealthy patients typically so I would imagine the one on one may be better. My surgeon and my primary physician seem to like both hospitals.
  16. I thought I could do it and did do it. I lost 100 pounds and was close to a normal weight and in very good health. The problem is I then gained 200 pounds. I've now lost 50 and am continuing to lose without surgery but I don't want to fall into the same trap. It took about 18 months to lose that 100 pounds and years to gain it back plus 100. All told I'm probably going to be set back about 10 years. I know I can lose the weight but I believe the surgery will help me maintain that weight loss.
  17. I bet Dr Now doesn't have to tell his patients very often to gain weight. It's unbelievable to go from 700 pounds to 160. I've always resigned myself to the fact that I will always be overweight but I may have to start changing that thinking.
  18. A simple Google street view would reveal he doesn't have neon signs outside his office. I'm quite certain the show finances these surgeries or else why would these people expose themselves to such ridicule? My surgeon does surgeries other than bariatric surgery. When my surgeon and Dr Now got into the profession, bariatric surgery didn't exist.
  19. Some may have watched the 600 pound virgin. In 2009 this guy was over 600 pounds and lost 400 pounds without surgery. By 2012 he had gained over 300 pounds and weighed over 500 pounds. The people who had the surgery were more successful than the ones who didn't even if they are still overweight.

    Wellbutrin?

I take Wellbutrin and have not experienced any side effects. I have noticed an increased sex drive which is a bummer since I'm single. I took Lexapro and that killed my drive and I felt doped up. Glad I switched to Wellbutrin.
  21. It's a show for entertainment and of course they will have the extreme cases. No one wants to see just an average 300 pound person get weight loss surgery. It's not a documentary about weight loss surgery. They wouldn't qualify at most surgeons practice. That's why they travel to Houston because Dr. Now is one of the few doctors in the country who will operate on people that size.
  22. Honestly, I found it encouraging. Melissa weighed over 600 pounds. She's cut her weight in over half and would be dead by now if she hadn't done the surgery. I haven't had my surgery yet, but I started at 470 pounds. If I'm 235 pounds after 10 years, I'll be thrilled. These people are the extreme and don't represent the majority of weight loss patients.
  23. I haven't had my surgery yet but I'm planning on one week. I have a desk job and I work from home so that will make it easier.
  24. I got her posts mixed up with someone else. I saw that and read another post about being married for 20 years so I was think they married when he was 30 and he's now about 50. I'm 31 so I'm about the same age he is. I do have sleep apnea but I don't sweat or get out of breath that easily.
  25. I haven't had surgery yet, but I make Protein shakes sometimes as a Meal Replacement. I start with some powder protein, usually whey protein and vanilla flavored. I then add about two tablespoons of Fage nonfat plain greek yogurt, one cut up banana, a little skim milk, a couple almonds, and just a little vanilla extract for flavor. Refrigerate for a couple hours and your good to go. Now most people don't like crunchy shakes so you skip the almonds but I don't mind.
