Wondering, once again, why I have to struggle so hard
hlj25950 replied to Alexandra's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I completely understand. I want to blame my band. It isn't tight enough!! The truth is, though, I am doing what I never thought I would...I am finding ways to eat more than I should. Drinking while I am eating, eating the WRONG foods, etc. So, while my ticker may say I am 176.5, this morning I was 188. 12 pounds!! Gained. GAAAAAAAHHHH! I really need to get my ass in gear, which includes taking it to the gym. I really need to remember that I never want to be that person I was again. Ever. I need to do better, for me. Intellectually, I knew there might come I point like this in my journey, but it still sucks. It is hard to make myself think about the fact that this is a battle that I will have to face for the rest of my life. I thoroughly believe that I AM addicted to food. Unlike other things you can be addicted to, you can't quit food cold turkey. Can you imagine a meth addict only getting a little meth a day? No, no, you can't have this big buffet of meth that everyone else is enjoying. Instead, you can have the low-carb, light version, on that teeny-tiny plate. Really. I fully believe that. I am physically and chemically addicted to food, to gluttony even. I guess I better start with today. -
My doctor is appalled that they do fills without flouro. All my fills have been doon with flouro, and given how often I've needed them and how a tiny amount makes such a huge difference, I can't imagine doing it without flouro! I wouldn't have lost nearly the weight I have lost, and I am slow to boot, if I had to work up to my restrictions every time I needed a fill. When I lose about 15 pounds, I always seem to need another one!

I'm 5'9", and I weighed 255 when I was trying to get approved for my band. I was so close to the 40 BMI cutoff for my insurance, but not quite there. I actually bought ankle weights, wore a jacket, kept my shoes on, and told them I was an inch shorter. All in all, it jacked my BMI barely over 40. The taller you are, the harder it is to gain that extra BMI point. Anyway, I ended up gaining the weight I weighed in at anyway waiting for my insurance approval and jumping through hoops. Don't purposefully try to gain weight, but do do what you need to do to have the surgery if it is the right thing for you.

Thank you, sunnysea, for your reply. I really hope I have 1-2 cc left!

Hi everyone. I have a question that hopefully someone can answer for me. I have a 4cc band that currently has 4cc in it. My surgeon says he isn't worried because the tubing, of course, contains some Fluid, and that my band will still have some play in it. Well, he might not be worried, but I AM!! I am not losing very fast right now, but I am losing, and I think I need another fill. Being restricted enough (not too tight, mind you) keeps me in check and helps me to not go overboard when I want to or am weak. I have been exercising 6 days a week, doing pretty great on my diet, but I really feel that I NEED my band to be working for me as a tool - like it is supposed to. I am worried that my time with any restriction is limited though. Does anyone know how much room is in a 4cc band with ALL the tubing. How much "play" do I have left. It's been almost a year (one week till my bandiversary), and I have lost 62 pounds! Which is great for me. 50% of my total excess and 60% to my goal. I am afraid that I won't come close to goal though if I can't get more restriction. Anyone?
-
I am almost 5'9", and my current BMI is 29.96 (down 10 points!!) at 200 pounds even. My goal weight (currently) is 160 which would put me at a BMI of 23.9. I think that's great!! If I lose more than that, wonderful. When I get to 160, if I feel I could lose more or need to lose more, I will reevaluate. In high school, I weighed 135, which is a BMI of 20. I don't understand where that comes from, because I will tell you that I looked anorexic. Seriously, people asked me. I had a 23" waist, and I couldn't have been thinner, no matter what the BMI says. I've never been a "good" weight for me. I went on hormone treatments and got pregnant, and within a year, I had gained 100 pounds! I sort of skipped a good-feeling body weight. My doctor says my ideal is 143 (21.4 BMI). I think that might be a little ridiculous, honestly, but I'll see when I get closer.

bump.... I am really hoping someone can help me with this. Anyone?

I haven't been this weight in over 5 years. However, I still cannot wear the jeans that I was wearing 10 lbs heavier than this. What gives? I wasn't more muscley then. I have lost almost 50 pounds and only one clothing size. AAARGH! I feel like there isn't much of a difference in the way I look. I know, how I feel is most important, but that hasn't been different either, as I never really felt bad Healthwise before the band. Is it skin? What? I am so sick of being a plus size! I'm still a 20!

Fast or gradual?
hlj25950 replied to Elisabethsew's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
My doctor fills if he and you come to a concensus that you need one. He will see what your weight loss is and what you feel like your restriction is. Also, every fill is done under flouro, so everytime I get a fill, it is to very restricted and spot on. As I lose weight, my stomach shrinks, and I need more saline in my band to give me a good restriction. I would hate doing fills every week. I love how my doctor does it. No one ever has to have an unfill, and I can see how much is going through my stoma. It gives a very clear picture. -

Before and After Lap Band Surgery - PICTURES ONLY
hlj25950 replied to DeLarla's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
December 3, 2006 This is a picture of me, already 20 pounds down from my highest weight (only picture I could find), and then another picture of me about a month ago. I am making progress. It is slow, but I can see the difference. Maybe I shouldn't have always been so camera shy so that I could see more of the work that I have accomplished. -
My doctor is Dr. Bour, but I know for a fact he will absolutely not fill patients that he didn't band. Sorry!
-
I am. Nice to meet you!
-
I know that everyone's body is different, but is there some way to guess how much a person has to lose to attain a different size? I am 5'9", and I am currently 225 pounds. At my highest, I was 262. I am a size 20 now and have been for the last 25 pounds. I think I still have to lose another 10 or so before I am in an 18. I gained most of my weight during pregnancies, and I really have no idea what weight I need to be at to be a certain size, or how much more I need to lose to be a certain size. I defnitely think you have to lose more weight to change a size the bigger you are. Is there some chart somewhere or some website that you can put in your height and weight and it will spit out a size for you? I would love that! It would help me to have a tangible number goal, and my biggest goal right now is to be able to shop at regular stores. I would love to be a 14 or a 16, and I would like to know how much further I have to go before I can ditch Lane Bryant.
-
Thanks everyone. I agree. I was just hoping...you know. They have those virtual models, but nothing that can give you a guess as to what size you might be. Thanks, Susan, for your compliment. I think it is and they are pretty cute too!

Could you have succeeded without the band?

I couldn't have succeeded without my band. I still have a long way to go, but I have never, ever gone this long or this far on my own. -
Hi everyone. I am going along slowly. I have my 3 month follow-up appointment today, and I am going to ask for another fill. I am eating less, but I wouldn't say that I am restricted by any means. I have had one fill so far. He put 2.4 cc in my 4.0 cc band. I felt restriction for the first week (maybe not even that long), and now I feel very, very little. It is better than before I had my fill though where I felt like I could eat like I did preband. My general trend is going down; although, I do fluctuate, and it is so discouraging to see a number pop up on the scale that you had thought you had passed two weeks ago. I hope everyone continues to do well on their band journey!

http://people.aol.com/people/article/0,26334,1209473,00.html A friend of mine says she looks like a deflated frog. From the above article regarding the Larry King interview: On another topic, King asked Reynolds whether she'd had surgery to lose 150 lbs. She said only, "Because of my health … I needed a full-scale medical intervention, and my doctors had to step in to save my life." For me, my weight loss is personal, but when you are in front of a camera every day, I think you have an obligation to say what you did, why, and how it isn't a solution for everybody. Also, that it took a lot of hard work. I know fully that people tend to think surgery is the easy way out. Maybe if more people who were in the public eye were candid and truthful about WLS, more people could live healthier, better, longer lives! Further more, maybe it would add it to the national heathcare mainstream, and it would be more likely to get covered by insurance whatever the WLS.

And now, I have my first restriction. It feels great! I feel full, and I had to stop eating. This is what I wanted!!!! I am feeling confident in my band now. Hopefully my weight loss can pick back up. I am excited now, again, to be here on this journey. I met a woman yesterday who was getting a fill at the same time as me, and she had been banded for four years. She was diagnosed with a brain tumor not long after she got her band, so she has had a tough go of it, but she is still there, four years later, getting a fill! :clap2: to her!

My doctor only does fills under flouroscopy, and I totally see the appeal in this as he will be able to see very closely how restricted I am. He said that most of his patients get great restriction after only one fill, and he has only ever had to do just a handful of unfills because someone was too tight. It makes me wonder why more doctors don't use flouroscopy to do fills. Does your doctor use flouro, and if not, do you wish they did? Fills are $250 with him (100 for me after insurance), but it seems like I will probably need fewer, and it seems like this will be a more accurate way to get fills. Am I naive? I hardly ever see people post that their docs use flouro, and it seems like everyone is having to get multiple fills and unfills. I am not saying that it is wrong not to have them done under flouro, but the flouro does make sense to me. Thoughts? My first fill is scheduled for June 7th, and I am thrilled. I need it bad!
