  1. Ok, here is an interesting subject for you and my personal story. I am post op about 2 months on 5/4/15. I've lost about 65 pounds so far all together and am about 10 pounds above my Doctor's goal. My goal is 25 pounds less than what the doc wants (Doc said 235, I want to hit 210). I work in Mexico (but live in Cali) and well I finally, after 14 years of doing this caught E. Coli. I had 105 degree temperature for 2 days plus I had a hurricane strength rains coming out of my butt for days, bad stomach cramping and pain... not to mention internal bleeding from the intestines. In 3 days I lost about 12 pounds. I was getting seriously dehydrated. After seeing my PCP, we decided that my overall health was more important than my diet and I had to break diet for a few days. When I say break diet, I mean that I had carbs. Mostly crackers, bread, and tons and tons of gatorade. I also had noodles and rice in my Soups which I tolerated all very well and the carbs seem to have helped me during the illness. I had a severe case. I was one step from being hospitalized. I've gained 6 pounds back of the 12 pounds that I lost. Mostly Water weight I guess. I am finally fully recovered as of today and am starting back on my diet again tomorrow. I'm still less than I was before I got ill. Would you have done the same thing? Break diet temporarily to take care of a could be life threatening illness? Is it bad? With how much weight I loss and how dehydrated I was, I am assuming that gaining 6 pounds of the weight loss back would be expected, right? Again, I am still about 6 pounds lighter than I was pre-sickness. What would you have done differently? I'm interested to see what people have to say or think on this. I wasn't able to take my Calcium Vitamins for a week. Apparently it doesn't mix well with E Coli and the antibiotics I had.

Gastric Sleeve and E. Coli :)

So, I am completely better now. I did gain back most of the weight, but the day after I peaked, it started coming back off again and now I am about 1.5 pounds above the low point, but this time losing it in a healthy and more timely manner. I'm happy with the results and glad I did what I did. I have found out that I can eat carbs. As others said, it is a low carb, not a no carb lifestyle. Yesterday I had a small personal pizza (like 4 inch diameter, not too big) for supper. I was still under the 150 carb limit a day my doc told me... I still lost .75 of a pound even with the pizza. My experience is that I have always eaten somewhat healthy. I don't eat that bad.... my problem was the quantity. Prior to surgery I would have eaten two or three of those pizzas. My biggest struggle right now is remember not to drink when I eat. That is very hard for me to do. I try my best though. I'm 90% successful, but there are points that I forget.

Gastric Sleeve and E. Coli :)

I apologize, I was on a business trip (in Mexico again) and didn't see this. I had a severe case, I started with a fever and then it went into the stomach problems. It really wasn't too much in the stomach as it was in my lower abdomen where I felt a lot of discomfort and pain. I had to go to the bathroom constantly, but it wasn't like normal diarrhea, it was very different. Hard to explain.

Gastric Sleeve and E. Coli :)

Diet was a poor choice of wording on my end. When I said diet, I mean like what I now normally eat, not as in dieting. Thanks for your feedback. Much appreciated.
  5. Ok, I'm totally confused by this.... I am doing most things right. I'm not perfect, but I log everything in my fitness pal and keep a good track on my diet and exercise. For example, I apparently did 9,100 steps yesterday on Fitbit. Which is weird because it was one of my lower activity days I felt. I ate ONLY about 849 calories yesterday. Totals 849 36 27 107 1,852 7 849 cals 36 carbs 27 fat 107 Protein 1852 sodium 7 sugar Besides sodium being higher than I would like, I did decent. Today is my second day on soft foods. Yesterday was my first. So this morning when I weighed myself, I gained .7 of a pound! Is this because of eating solid food and it weighing more? My bowel movements have been infrequent. Could that be in play as well? Like am I still on the right track? Is this just a minor setback? I am 3 weeks post op. So could it just be a plateau in combination with being blocked up inside? I feel bloated. Also, I've noticed I really don't get full. I stop willingly and am content, but never full. I wonder if I really have the sleeve sometimes. I'm usually hungry and I'm able to eat with no problems. I stop when I think I've eaten enough so that I keep on track. Is this normal? While I feel I have much more control over how much or little I eat post-op, I'm still usually hungry and really didn't get all the results that I thought I would have. I did lose about 50 pounds so far (30 day pre-op diet + 3 weeks post op). Thank you for your answers.

    Weight gain after Gastric Sleeve?

Thanks for the answers. I talked to my NUT about it. She's onboard. She feels my weight loss is well above average for this stage in the game and my healing seems to be above average so one glass won't kill me, just make sure that I don't eat and drink at the same time. Told me to go for mashed potatoes, baked fish and maybe some Soup to keep it easy on my stomach. It's a dinner/private unveiling ceremony that's worth a lot to my company and I'm the project head/Director... so yeah not having a sip (or 2 if I like it) would be very weird. Also if you are diabetic or such, then I recommend not working in my industry. I barely drink by the way, only at events like this.

    Weight gain after Gastric Sleeve?

I work in promoting the wine industry and it is for a wine event on a new bottle we are coming out with. So yeah, being forced is pretty much it.

    Weight gain after Gastric Sleeve?

Great response. I do have a PIP and just requested a stronger one via email. I have been able to eat larger amounts quickly after surgery. On pureed foods, I was doing 4oz since the first day I was allowed. 4 oz a meal. Now on soft foods, I do about 2 to 3 oz of food per meal with no problems or tightness or fullness. The only problem I had was post op day 1 with Jello. I guess I am lucky. I am tolerating everything quite well. I always said I had an Iron stomach.... looks like that stands. I have to do a social event where I have to drink a glass of wine. Long story, but I have to. Not a choice. Its for my profession. I am assuming I will be ok with that and just make sure I limit myself to one, right? No bad side effects besides getting buzzed off 1 glass?

    2 Tablespoons of Food. Really?

Ok, so I talked to my Doc. They said 4oz of food 3 times a day is fine, perfect actually. If I can tolerate that now that means my healing is probably going quicker than expected hence why I can fit more food in my stomach. She said that once I start on solids next week I will be able to eat much less and feel full quicker. Also for the Protein shake, while Atkins may be good, try the Premier Protein. 30g of protein, 160 cals and 1g of Sugar (or 2g of Sugar in the 14 oz). Saludos! David
  10. Hello, Ok, so I have sharp pains in the left side of my body, mid-section. I guess the farthest left cut on my body, closest to where the drain was. It is a mix between sharp and cramping pains. I am 2 weeks post op. I have been having this for nearly a week. I started pureed foods the other day and have had no issues. This is pain when I move or am still. It is random. Sometimes is less than others. The wounds themselves look good almost picture perfect. Is this pain normal? If not, what could it be? Will it pass? Should I contact my doc? Thanks! David
  11. I was thinking the same thing, but this happened prior to me eating. I was only on Clear liquids when it started. Talked to the doc today and they said it is from the hernia repair. Today I had less pain. So I think it is correct. Thank you though
  12. So I'm on the pureed diet. I am eating about 4 oz, maybe 4.5 oz a meal right now, three times a day. I don't think I am overdoing it or stretching anything. I am handling it fine in my stomach, or so I thought.... Is that too much food? Am I all right? I am always hungry but when I eat I get filled up fast. I'm worried I am eating too much... but I am dropping about a pound and a half a day. So I know I'm not eating too much, but I say eating too much in reference to my healing stomach. I don't want my pouch to get stretched Thanks. David

    STEROIDS....GRRRRR....

I take medicine for psoriasis. I am 2 weeks post op. 1 week post op I took my new injection, Cimzia and I had a severe allergic reaction and went to the hospital. I had 3 IVs and prednisone. I gained 5 pounds over night. Only today, 6 days later have I FINALLY reached the pre-weight of the allergic incident. It sucks. Get through it and move on. You'll lose it hopefully in a week.

    What to scramble eggs in?

I've been big into avocado oil lately. I haven't used it post-op yet, but it was great before the pre-op diet.
  15. I will post some soon. Thanks @MoMo12onTheGo. What about portion sizes? I am eating about 4 - 4.5 oz of pured foods a meal right now fine with no problem. If I feel full, I stop. I also worked up to this over the past couple days. The first couple days it was like 2, then 3, and now I am at 4 - 4.5. Is that normal? I'm not stretching my stomach out? Thanks!

    2 Tablespoons of Food. Really?

So a question here..... I am about 14 days out and I can eat literally 4 oz of food, pureed with no problem, three times. It was pureed chicken with low sodium mexican salsa. I'm worried if I am stretching my sleeve out? Or doing damage I shouldn't be? I get full with it and I stop. My NUT pretty much said, eat what you can within a 20 min period slowly. When you feel feel stop. I do 4 - 4.5 oz of food. I am only doing 800 - 900 cals of food a day. Is this bad? I'm worried now.

2 weeks post op... sharp pains

I just saw another user post this, I did have a hernia, so this may be the answer: Did you have hernia repair, as well? If so, it could be that. Your abdominal muscles that were cut during your surgery could be the culprit, but if you have ANY ANY ANY questions that it could be your heart, CALL YOUR DR. ASAP! It can't hurt to ask, and then you are reassured. Best to you!
  18. Ok, so I am having sharp pains/cramping on the left side of me. It has been bad the past week.... could this be because of the hernia? I had one.... I actually just posted a thread on this and now I saw your post. Also OP, glad to hear you are fine (or will be).
  19. @@trulyamazingtoo I have a question.... I am about 2 weeks post-op and I am always hungry. I eat a little bit though and I am full (pureed foods). I got about 900 calories today. Most in about 6 weeks (pre-op diet was 30 days). Is that because my head hasn't got used to the smaller stomach yet? Will there be a time I'm not hungry at all like that? I was kind of hoping for that result to help ensure that I wouldn't eat so much. I've lost about 48 pounds in 6 weeks, so I'm on the right track.... so just wondering. Thanks.

    Snack Attack!

I go after laughing cow light cheese everyday right now. I love it. Low fat and low cal. It's ok with my doc. That has been my snack of choice right now. I could do NSA pudding or fudgcicles but I'd rather stay away from sweet stuff. Just my opinion.

2 weeks post op... sharp pains

I sent an email. Thanks molina. I wasn't sure if it was normal or not. David
  22. Hi all, I'm 8 days post-op. I've lost in the pre-op diet and so far a whopping 47 pounds. I've lost 11 pounds since the surgery, the rest was on the month long liquid diet. So I have a question... I've asked my doc and they were "meh", telling me if I have to, but I wanted some others opinions. I have to travel to Mexico City for work. It would be during my "soft foods period" about 3 weeks after surgery. I am on full liquids. In order to prep myself and see if I can handle the food, I wanted to "push" myself a little bit and see if I can handle pureed foods a little early. Instead of pureed foods on Day 14, I would do it on Day 10 and not much either, it would be just a little bit, like dinner and slowly work myself to full pureed by the 14th. I am taking chewable Vitamins and other pills and so far no problem so I think my body could handle it. I don't want to be suck in Mexico City on a full liquid diet, especially since I'm going to have a very tight schedule and there are meal meetings with some government and corporate officials, so it would just be awkward, not everybody understands what we are going through. Much easier to find soft Protein than pureed foods and I wouldn't want to revert to a full liquid diet either. What are your thoughts? Doctor was neutral on it because my advancement in everything has been way above normal (weight loss, healing, etc.). I just want to make sure I'm not going to do something that would really hurt me. I'm fairly confident I will be fine. Thanks! David
