D-I-S-R-E-S-P-E-C-T Find out what it means to me

Such a coincidence. I read an interview with Deneuve late last night from yesterday's Times. When asked whom she would want to be if she were not herself, she confided that you are her fantasy alter ego.

You are our fearless leader. Now stand in the corner. To borrow from "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" and perk it up -- Inner Surfer Girl, you are Catherine Deneuve. Anyone who was a model for Marianne is an excellent choice for fantasy alter ego.

I don't know about a metaphor, but it surely says that I'm a babe of advanced years. The French have a much nicer (?) phrase which translates as "a woman of a certain age." Me and Catherine Deneuve. Not bad.

    Lap band removal question

The expectation is that, barring unusual circumstances, the band would remain. It serves to maintain the weight loss. If your band is in fact a problem in medical terms, it would make no sense that your insurance plan would not cover removal. If a person wants the band removed for non-medical reasons, then I can see the plan refusing to pay.

    Dumped on Valentine's Day

The only thing you did 'wrong' was too overestimate him after not much contact. When someone is in the middle of making a plan for the next day and, in the middle of the middle, says, "Oops, never mind," you know you've given him too much credit. His on-paper credentials may be solid, but there's a major piece missing. You're feeling disappointed and hurt, so you may not want my take on a few of the details you laid out. If that's accurate, stop reading after these next words: You're fine and he's a dope. Now I'll continue in no particular order just in case. Telephone is better than text, especially in the early, getting-to-know-you stage. To text is to put distance between parties, it's so impersonal. If someone has time to text, he/she has time for even a quick call to confirm. Texting gets less objectionable when people have enough connection and history to be super-casual. You wrote, "Between the first date and the second date, I think he got scared. I don't think he was expecting to like me so much and he freaked." Maybe, maybe not. You'll never know what was going on in his pinhead, so don't speculate. Speculating accomplishes one thing only: It keeps us on the hamster wheel. (Easier said than done, but certainly doable.) You are a catch because you're taking the risk to meet men. Keep applying your non-negotiable criteria when deciding whom to meet and try not to think of each one who is in contention for a second get-together as a potential sweetie. A friend told me about a friend of hers who is now planning her wedding with a man she met on a dating site. Her approach was to keep dating those who met the basics until one turned into a relationship. It doesn't sound like such a bad method, especially when a dating résumé isn't vast. I'm sorry you're feeling the way you do now.

@@jess9395 wrote "Dang clearly I missed the post with all the cursing out! I love them for the entertainment value! "Henry Mancini's love theme to Romeo and Juliet, how boring!" The thread in question was my first exposure to heavy-duty cussin' directed at individuals in a site of this type and I'm a little surprised that it wasn't the first. It wasn't the "unsuccessful sleeve" topic, Jess. The misspelled "Judgement" was in the title followed by a question on whether it's okay to smoke weed after surgery. I can't quote chapter and verse for you, but imagine a Tasmanian Devil trapped in a pit with people reaching in to help. Then imagine the Tasmanian devil going berserk, spitting and hissing in all directions, insisting on being lifted from its hole only as it wishes to be lifted. The more people come along to assist, the more vicious the creature becomes. In the end the creature seems to be spitting, hissing and nipping in all directions because that's all it knows. Then throw in a laugh track. Henry Mancini is an icon. Cheer up, you got a good one. I'm the one who got the novelty song, "Mañana."

How do you know you're doing enough?

@@gpmed, in general you're doing all the right things. Tweak what needs tweaking for health and good nutrition, but never tweak so far that you'll feel you're under punishment. You want to enjoy your progress, not feel enslaved to it. Even if you were short of the 60 at 6 designated by your surgeon, it would be nothing to make yourself miserable about. Do the right thing and it comes out even in the end. We all lose at different rates. The main thing is to see loss.

That happends, but, in this instance, I think it's likely that the sewer-mouthed OP registered at BP for the sole purpose of riling and ridiculing people who are or have been unmistakably fat. It happens. I've seen two or three others who I'm sure were here just to entertain themselves and then slither off to search out other sites for displays of their warpèdness. (I make up words.)

Since Tony Bennett has been named here, I want you to know that in 1964 I was at a friend's Sweet 16. It was in an old-style, glamorous sort of nightclub in Brooklyn, an unusual venue for a party for 30 or so teenagers. The entertainer was -- tada! -- Tony Bennett himself, in the flesh, live, right before our eyes. We all knew him, of course, but our callow selves were not fully appreciative. The show seemed to go on forever and we got quite restless. The adults of the Sweet 16 girl's family, at a nearby table, had a high old time, though.

How do you know you're doing enough?

Whenever the subject of "how much protene?" comes up, my antennae come up. When the desired daily range varies from post to post and some link the goal to height, we're treading bumpy ground. (The height-gram connection is apt for my 65".) My assigned goal is 60-100g daily, with 60 being a solid, not half-heartedly recommended, minimum. It's also my understanding that to exceed 120 or 140 (sorry, I don't recall which figure at the moment), may do worse than force the kidneys to work harder: They may cease to function. Does it not make sense to stick with each of our surgical practice's guideline? I hope they all have RD's on staff.

Have you ever noticed that, when you do give a tough-love type of response, people "like" it, but the addressee is never amongst them? Most often people want to hear what they want to hear. Spring chicken is more like it, Missy. My thought upon reading your day-of-birth song title was, "Geez, I pre-date Peggy Lee's 'Fever.'" The funny thing is that, when I clicked into the BirthdayJams link, I found that another Peggy Lee song was #1 on my day. Ever hear "Manana (is good enough for me)?" It must have been around for quite some time, as I do know it. @@2goldengirl, let's send the two of them to their rooms without any supper.

Psych Eval Clearance is Making Me Crazy

@@melyssafaye == That's good. I didn't get any of that from your initial note, especially not from the part about the psychiatrist saying you may be hiding something. Whew, the therapist needs to go, but not right now. The points she raises about fear of male attention, et al., come up in the forums often. The important thing, though, is that your only response might be "I don't know how I'll react and am willing to find out when presented with such situations.....There are lots of resources to help learn to deal with stress, including WLS support groups both in-person and online (you already know of one!); books/recordings/etc.; hobbies; exercise (exercise really does help to relieve stress).....Dear therapist, you're raising concerns about situations that might exist regardless of the method of weight-loss. I am motivated to lose weight for my health, my future and my belief in myself. Surgery will be a tool for losing and maintaining forever after. If I find that any of the concerns you're speaking about do arise, I will have you and many sources of support to cope and learn to conquer on my own." All in your own words from your own mind and heart, of course. Once you have what you want from her, send her to me. I'll slap her, the negative beech.

Psych Eval Clearance is Making Me Crazy

The psychiatrist is "the doctor [who] required a letter or phone call...?" The therapist doesn't need to be well-informed about WLS nor is any prejudice she may have relevant to her recommending it for you. The purpose of the psych eval is to show the insurance company that you understand the risks of surgery [nb: all surgeries have risk]; that you have realistic expectations of surgery; that you comprehend that you are the one who must do the proper work in order to lose and maintain weight loss and that the surgery is an aid toward the ends; that you are capable of comprehending and following instructions from the surgery practice; that you are motivated. Very simple and straightforward. You, unfortunately, are tied to the present therapist, as I'm sure you don't want to start anew and thereby delay for several months. Also because the Big Jerk Psychiatrist has said you may be trying to hide something. If I were you, I'd want the therapist to tell the BJP that's she'd have responded to her sooner except for time constraints. That will cover your tush. My rant is that the surgery practices and the insurers make such a kerfuffle about such a simple requirement. The patient ends up paying several hundred to some BJP for no good reason. Patients must find out whether the insurance company requires a letter of support from a psychiatrist who doesn't know the patient or whether they will accept a recommendation from the patient's own therapist who has some sort of license (PhD in clinical psychologist; LCSW; whatever other, depending on the paient's state). I had surgery six years ago. My own therapist, who I'd been seeing a year or two at that time, wrote a seven-sentence letter, two sentences of which were "I have been seeing Ms. X ..." and "If you need any other info...." Five sentences of substance and I was in, or at least the five didn't keep me out. Of course it may be that insurance companies have toughened their requirements since my time, but how bad could it be. It's also likely that there are differences from one company to another. Nevertheless, the auxiliary industry of BJP's can't possibly be necessary in all instances, can it?
