    Before Your Surgery Suggestion!

Folks, don't fret too much. There's a learning curve at the beginning and everything will make sense as you go along. Do the reading and the questioning, but be assured that you'll get it all. You'll be best off if you take care of the research before surgery so that you don't unnecessarily freak out afterward. I was also concerned with what to do when before and after. So that I could free my cluttered mind, I made a huge calendar covering about six weeks to mark each change in stages, when to take meds, everything I needed to stay on top of. Dear, old oak tag, forgotten since Junior High, is still on the market!

    Has anyone weaned off vitamins?

You're implying that, had you researched the nutritional suppplements sooner, you may not have had surgery. "That's a lot!" Yes, it is, just like all the cake, coookies and other junk, but so much smaller. How much of a hardship is it to take suppplements at different times with different meals? You don't have to "remember" jack. That's what seven-day pillboxes are for. Thank you for holding up the mirror. Now I'll never whine about my supplements again.

My issue or is it his (the hubby)

Maybe he's feeling that he's lost his eating partner. Or, if he's significantly overweight, he may think you'll reject him along the way. Or any number of other things (I hate to speculate, but it's a trap I fall into sometimes). You don't say whether you've said anything specifically about the snarkiness. If you haven't, take a light-handed, humorous approach.

How to cope with death so soon out...

@@cbonet and @@Rosey posey, someone at another website posted the poem a couple of weeks ago for a member who had just lost an important person. The rawness of the wound may need some time to heal before the poem can be fully digested, but it really is a stunning, expansive view of what life is about apart from the tangible.

Do you see that menu? It's curious that he hasn't moved out. I've had surgery and I wouldn't touch something called a "tuna patty." So, to answer your question in what may be the language of the Chinese menu he orders from, it's one from Column A and one from Column B.

  9. This evening's clothing exchange was one of the best. The highlight? A BP member came! And she brought lots and lots of great clothes! And found lots of clothes! And is terrific, too! And lives a few blocks from where I grew up! If I did that at all!

So they advertise the date and location of the sale. For a week before the sale, people come with their clothing items tagged, hung and priced. They are assigned a number that they place on their tags. They get 30 - 40% of the sale price and my friends get the remaining cut. It's a ZOO. The sellers get a pre-sale date to shop before it opens to the public. Anyone who volunteers gets a discount, too. There is a few days of after sale when sellers come collect their clothes or they are donated to a clothes bank. The big work for them is keeping track of who gets what as the clothes sell. It's definitely a lot of work, but the participants are HUGE and bring PILES and PILES of clothes.

I have never participated but the $$ flow is great for all interested. Because the seller prices their own stuff, it's up to them how much they potentially earn. It's a great concept all around.

The venue size is HUGE. Clothes, toys, handbags, shoes, maternity... HUGE for Virginia is about 10,000 square feet of empty store front. It's a cool process and a brilliant idea.

How to cope with death so soon out...

Your grandmother has been an important presence in your life. You two have shared love and affection. Why would you want to say "goodbye" to such delicious things? I see the emotional adjustments as being more about knowing that the love is still in you as are the things you learned from your grandmother about how to live a good life. Missing her physical presence is the hard part, but time takes care of it emotionally and intellectually. Now is the time to feel your feelings. They do make staying your course shaky. You can draw on the strength and resolve you used to begin exploring surgery. If your grandmother knew that you've had the procedure, recall that she'd be cheering you on. No matter what, don't berate yourself for having difficulty now or even if you slide a little. Journaling about your grandmother, your relationship and how you feel about her death may clarify a lot. Find comfort wherever it is, but be aware that it isn't in food; overeating and bad choices will only numb you and delay the inevitable, making it more difficult. This poem may help. Epitaph by Merritt Malloy When I die Give what’s left of me away To children And old men that wait to die. And if you need to cry, Cry for your brother Walking the street beside you. And when you need me, Put your arms Around anyone And give them What you need to give to me. I want to leave you something, Something better Than words Or sounds. Look for me In the people I’ve known Or loved, And if you cannot give me away, At least let me live on your eyes And not on your mind. You can love me most By letting Hands touch hands, By letting Bodies touch bodies, And by letting go Of children That need to be free. Love doesn’t die, People do. So, when all that’s left of me Is love, Give me away.

    Failed :(

Jane, I can't speak of the coffee thing, as I was never told to stop. I will say that your choice to quit smoking is genius. Long ago my beloved internist told me that, if both were too much to take on at once, it was more important to stop smoking than to lose weight. All I can offer are a couple of tips from the stop-smoking program I attended a thousand years ago -- before anyone had heard of bariatric surgery and the asp nipped at Cleopatra. - When you feel the urge, drink Water or orange juice. The later especially helps diminish the urge - When you feel the urge, inhale as slowly and deeply as you possibly can and exhale as slowly and completely as you can. Do it again. Taking in oxygen somehow diminishes the urge. It may not last long, in which case, repeat. Do this a thousand times a day if necessary. I have no idea why, but quitting was easier for me than for most. I'll tell you anyway that you're in no way lame. You can do this.

Why I'll Never Say, 'You Look Great!'

I don't see it as a matter of my preference. It's more about whom is speaking to me. Not everyone has the right to be so personal. Those who do know it; those who don't should know that they don't. There's more to it than this, but the fine points take a long time to spell out. When in doubt, I see nothing wrong with telling some that she looks happy or relaxed or like the world is hers. Something along that line. It covers a lot of territory without naming the thing that may be unwelcomed.

    Gift for surgeon

@@Inner Surfer Girl, my esteemed colleague in WLS, you're absolutely correct about all the staff who had a part. As a former legal client, I thank you on behalf of all the former clients who weren't thinking. @@rebcal, the gift-giving is still a nice idea, but it can get out of hand. I still think that the personal aspect of heartfelt, handwritten notes will achieve what you intend. Not so long ago I wrote in another BP topic about being at my practice 15 months out and 115 pounds down. I was overcome when I saw the scale and walked foolish-weeping throughout the office to thank each staff member from the surgeon and NP to the appointment maker, the medical assistant who weighed me and checked BP each visit, the insurance coordinator and a couple of administrative support people who Id never met. Each told me that I'd done the work, but I really did feel that each of them had a part in it. I could tell that my "thanks" touched them. When it comes to work, we all like to know that what we do leads somewhere.

    Yeast infection

I think you're talking about intertrigo candidiasis? It's an unfortunate, rather common yeast infection that occurs in close places such as under the belly overhang and under the breasts. If were told to get over-the-counter clotrimazole cream or other anti-fungal cream, they work for I.C. Keep using the cream sparingly twice daily, as you probably were told, and you should be cleared up by surgery. Even if not, I don't see why surgery would be postponed. The affected area isn't one where surgical incisions are made. If I were you, I'd phone my surgeon's on Monday to mention the infection; I think I'd be told not to worry or just to mentioned it while being prepped for surgery. Fyi if you haven't already found out: - The best (but, alas, not foolproof) way to prevent recurrence of the infection is to keep the area(s) clean and dry. You can also dust the areas with baby cornstarch as an extra measure. - Three common, generic prescription creams are nystatin; nystatin and triamcinolone; and econazole. The advantage to these is that your medical plan probably covers them, hence, they'll probably cost you less than the O-T-C products. I don't see that they're more effective than O-T-C. - When the infection recurs, all these topical treatments seem to clear it up in a few days. Best wishes on your surgery!
