First appointment in the morning
bree1289 replied to bree1289's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you :] -
I've been a heavy smoker for over 7 years. I'm aware that you CANNOT smoke throughout (before or after) this process, but I need some encouragement on how to become 100% smoke free. I started a habit of drinking a cup of tea every time I was going out for a cigarette. Sometimes I would have both cigarette and tea in my hand, (addiction is addiction) but other times I would get annoyed with the process and just have the tea instead. I've successfully cut back from two packs a day to 4-5 cigarettes a day by doing this alone. Does anybody have any advice for me? I really want to be ready for my first appointment this month and would love to say I've been smoke free for a week rather than I still smoke occasionally. Please be kind, but all advice is very much so appreciated.

Quitting Smoking Pre-Op
bree1289 replied to bree1289's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congratulations! I'm going to be taking the same route, throwing the rest of them in the garbage and just deciding I'm no longer a smoker. Thanks for the advice and the luck, I definitely needed both! -

Thank you so much! Looking at my habits from just a few weeks ago I totally get what you mean, I really was controlled by smoking. I'll definitely stock up on Vitamin C (never knew that helped with quitting!) and the last of my cigarettes will be going in the garbage tonight. I'm so ready to start a new chapter. -
Quitting Smoking Pre-Op

Thank you. I keep telling myself I've already given up so much of them, I don't know why I'm clutching to the last few. I'll just throw them away, again thanks for the advice :] -
Psychiatrist against the surgery
bree1289 replied to bree1289's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
He actually told me psychologically that I would be stable enough mentally and my pre existing condition would have nothing to do with the psych evaluation. I am going to keep my appointments with the surgeon and the nutritionist, the comments on here definitely helped keep me on track with what my goal is. Thank you so much :] -
I'm really torn. I had an appointment with my psychiatrist whom I respect very much. I brought up the fact that I've started the process of having the gastric bypass done and he was very much so against it. He told me I was too young and not overweight enough, that many women my age look just like me. He also said there are many different ways for me to try and lose this weight that aren't WLS, and didn't waiver in opinion when I listed the dozens of ways I've attempted for years. I have to take medication for life because of a pre existing condition, so I asked if his concern was me not being able to absorb the medications as well and he said not really (that having been my only concern). I don't know what to think now. He told me to cut my stomach and torture myself with food is no way to live, and no way to lose weight. I feel a little defeated before it even began :[ I guess I just want someone's opinion, someone's support. My family isn't very supportive of this either.

Funny, my therapist was also supportive with my decision to start this process. Thank you, and good luck! -

Thank you, I definitely am still meeting with the surgeon and his nutritionist. I almost feel guilty going against his advice but I have to do this for myself. -
Headache is still with me. Hospital today

If you put your hands and feet in a hot tub and an ice pack on your neck/back of your head that can help a lot with migraines. It redirects blood flow which is what causes the pressure. -

you're right, I guess I'm just deterred being that he as my doctor didn't agree with the idea at all. But I know how I've struggled, and that this is going to be what's best for me. Thank you very much for your input. -
. Thank you so much!

I'm brand new to the forum, and also just started this journey (my first appointment being on March 19th). I'm 25 years old, have a 5 year old little girl, and have struggled with my weight for as long as I can remember. I've tried countless fad diets and different life styles just to gain back everything and then some. My most recent attempt was becoming Vegan for a year and a half. Not only did I lose over 80 pounds, but I started losing my hair too lol :]. I look forward to meeting people like me who just need that general guidance and the tool that bariatric surgery offers. I can't wait for my new life to begin :].
