What, specifically, caused you to become obese?
misswhitneym replied to careya123's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
PCOS + Insulin Resistance + Metabolic Syndrome -
I had substantial hairloss from months 3-6. Around month 7 it just stopped. I didn't change anything, so I think it just ran its course. Just make sure you get your protein, water, and vitamins, and it will eventually lessen.

Questions for Alcohol Drinkers ONLY!
misswhitneym replied to Cape Crooner's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm also in the 3 months, no, no, no category. I will say, in weeks where I have a few drinks my weight loss is slower, which is frustrating. Also, I get tipsier faster, so my biggest change in drinking habits from before surgery to now is that I cannot drink as much as I used to (I'm also 100 pounds lighter, so that may play a part in that). -
Pregnancy after surgery
misswhitneym replied to ToniMarie05's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My doc only recommended waiting a year. I don't know anyone that's been pregnant after the sleeve, but there is a forum on this site about the topic. -
When did people notice your weight loss?
misswhitneym replied to newbeginnings1965's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had people close to me say something around 40-50 pounds down, but once I hit around 75-80, I started getting comments from acquaintances. -
What's your "weight loss pet peeve?"
misswhitneym replied to Elode's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
. YES! My husband gets offended that I don't want to share. We shared food presurgery, but for me it is like an ownership thing post surgery. Even though I can't eat it doesn't mean I want to share it! Also, I think for me it's a bit psychological. I haven't quite figured this one out for me. I'm the exact opposite. I NEVER shared food before surgery, but now, as soon as I'm done, it's fair game for my husband. If he's not around, my extra food usually goes straight into the trash, so at least when he poaches off my plate, I know it's not going to waste. -
I'm in the same boat. I couldn't tolerate chewable Vitamins at all, so at my 1 month appointment my doctor and NUT approved me moving to capsules. The capsules still make me sick if I'm not careful, but if I spread them out through the day (I take 3/day) and always eat something right after taking them, I'm usually okay.

What Brands of Drinks do you use?
misswhitneym replied to theatrejo's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Recently I've been LOVING Hint Water and Ayala Herbal Water. I've found Hint Water at Whole Foods and my normal grocery store, but the Herbal Water I've only found at my normal grocery store. They're unsweetened. Some of my favorite flavors are Honeydew, Watermelon, or Cucumber for the Hint Water, and vanilla Mint Lemongrass or Lemon Ginger for the Herbal Water. -
How many days were you in the hospital?
misswhitneym replied to LaLaLucy's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon told me there was an 80% chance I'd only be there one night. I had a lot of pain and nausea, and I wasn't ready to go home the day after surgery, so they kept me another night. By day 3, I went home feeling a lot better (so 2 nights in the hospital). -
things i wish they would have told me...
misswhitneym replied to glitterpockets's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wanted to be as prepared as possible, but I overshopped! I didn't want to eat anything more than just once or twice, so I ended up throwing a LOT away. I wish I knew that it would take a WEEK for the gas pain to go away. Also, I didn't know that the gas pain would be worse than any other pain. Finally, I wish I knew it would take 3-4 weeks for me to get my energy back. I was completely zonked out the first few weeks. -
I needed help the first few days while I was in the hospital, but by the time I got home on day 3 3, I was okay by myself while my husband was at work. He had to help with laundry, feeding the dogs, and basically anything involving bending over or heavy lifting.

Any ST. LOUIS sleevers familiar with Dr. J. Stephen Scott out of Des Peres Hospital?
misswhitneym replied to Nikki Monroe's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
AWESOME! I finally met Dr. Scott this past Wednesday morning and I will say that when I left the waiting room was PACKED! I will continue to make my appointments at the beginning of the day. Question for you. How long did it take you to get approved and then scheduled for surgery? How long was that process? They told me up to 6 weeks. After I submitted, 6 weeks sounds about right. (Granted, that doesn't include the 6 months of document gathering leading up to submission). It took about 2 weeks for my insurance to approve, then surgery was about 3-4 weeks after that. I was so impatient and would have loved for it to go faster, but it all worked out fine. -
Roll call all who had surgery JUNE 2015
misswhitneym replied to JosieAppleHead's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was sleeved 6/9, and I'm down about 30 pounds. I'm currently in a stall, which is annoying, but I'm trying to be patient. The hardest part is keeping myself from thinking "ok, I'm done losing weight..I guess that's it". I know the stall will break eventually and I'll get back to losing weight, but part of me still doesn't believe that. I just keep reminding myself that I'm happy with my progress. Anyway, I'm currently eating ground meats, steamed frozen veggies, and thin shaved deli meats. I cannot wait for next week when I can get back to eating raw crunchy veggies and nuts and seeds, plus chicken! I see lots of salads in my future! The past few days nothing really sounds appetizing, so I've just been focusing on getting in my Protein and liquids. All in all, can't complain! -
Any ST. LOUIS sleevers familiar with Dr. J. Stephen Scott out of Des Peres Hospital?
misswhitneym replied to Nikki Monroe's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Dr. Scott did my surgery (gastric sleeve) in June. I really like him, and I have no regrets choosing him as my surgeon. A few words of advice - appointments with Dr. Scott are very short as they usually double or triple book him, so if you have any questions, write them down ahead of time and make sure to get them in before the appointment is over. Also, appointments earlier in the day have shorter wait times (I've waited up to an hour after my appointment time for a 5 minute appointment). He's also very matter of fact, which could be off-putting to some people, but I appreciated it very much. The nurses at MyNewSelf are really good and super nice. Your nurse will have to schedule your actual surgery, and even after insurance approval that takes time. They're also very difficult to get in touch with (which can be irritating if you're impatient like me). The care at the hospital before and after surgery was much better than I could have hoped for. I was really impressed with everyone I was in contact with - from nurses to techs and the doctors I saw there. Overall, I would recommend Dr. Scott to anyone. Good luck! -
When do you start to feel normal (after surgery)
misswhitneym replied to Jim in Utah's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I felt physically better within 7-10 days, but I was really fatigued and had some brain fog for the first 3-4 weeks. By a month out, I felt like I had my energy back. -
I was allowed lettuce at 6 weeks, but no tomatoes or raw veggies until 8 weeks.

Snacks or no snacks, I'm confused
misswhitneym replied to quiltermom65's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I eat 3 meals and sometimes a snack. My nutritionist encourages the snack, especially something high Protein to help me reach my goal, but some days there's just not enough time to get all of my liquids and eat a snack. Plus, most days eating more is the last thing I want. -
How do you all figure your goal weight

1 week post op and feeling blue
misswhitneym replied to tiffanyt's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I felt a little blue soon after surgery. I felt fine with the liquid diet, but I was so exhausted and wondering if it was worth it. Now that I'm 5 weeks out I feel great and have no regrets. If this lasts more than a couple of days, I would recommend talking to your doctor about it. -
What does it feel like when you eat something your stomach isn't ready for? I'm 5 weeks out, and I'm following my plan from my surgeon. So far, everything has gone down fine. I'm feeling good restriction, and I haven't had any problems with anything I've eaten. I just want to know, as I'm introducing new foods, will I know if I eat something I'm not ready for?

Protein Shakes and samples
misswhitneym replied to Nikki Monroe's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I got my Protein powder samples at Nashua Nutrition online. That's also where I ordered my Vitamins. Just a heads up, they came in clear plastic bags with a label that just had the brand and flavor - no nutritional information or instructions. The instructions came on a separate sheet of paper. So far I've liked all of them except the Isopure Zero Carb (the pre-made drinks are my fave, but I'm not a fan of the powder). -
I took 3 weeks, which was perfect for me. That third week I had absolutely no energy, so I was glad I was at home. I also went back on a Wednesday, and worked Wednesday and Thursday, then had Friday off for 4th of July. It was nice going back for a short week.

I was having problems with chewables - I would throw up within 5 minutes of taking them. At my 1 month appointment, I talked to the nutritionist about it, and he approved me changing to capsules that I can swallow whole (they usually don't recommend this until 6 weeks out). I still get nausea when I take the capsules, and I throw up occasionally. It's much better if I take them with food.

I really like the Isopure zero carb drinks. The Orange Pineapple Banana is my favorite. I drink about half a bottle at a time over ice. I didn't notice a bad smell, but the texture is a little off-putting. It looks like it should be the consistency of gatorade, but it's thicker than that. For me, they go down easier some days than a shake if I'm running low on protein.
