I'd like to share my story with you all. My diabetes was so bad, I was taking 150 units of insulin a day via pump (thats right 150 units). Couldnt lose weight. Miserable. Endocrinologist suggested I consider Gastric Bypass surgery for the diabetes. Something about getting the duodenum out of the digestive mix REALLY makes a difference in diabetics. I resisted...a LOT! Didnt want it, never wanted it....but as a nana of a now 7 year old and 1 year old and more to come and a wonderful husband and family, I realized that I need to be on this earth healthy for a long long time...and the only way to do it was to fix this diabetes thing. I had RNY gastric bypass on May 24, 2011 Ive lost about 140 lbs and am now at 1200 calories a day but still losing a lb here and there. It has leveled out at about 150
.
But heres the BEST news: I now take......drum roll.......9.0 units of insulin a day!! Ive never felt so good and the weight loss was just the bonus. I LOVE my diabetes now..MUCH more manageable and Im uber insulin sensitive! So the weight loss was the bonus....I did it for the diabetes. But now the trick is keeping it off.

High protein (for me 80-100g a day); low carb ( NOT "NO carb"...just lower than normal), low fat and small, small servings. and at least 64 oz of non-caffeinated beverage a day. I cant do water...so I drink Crystal Light Lemonade like its my JOB!

I wasnt able to lose the weight before because of the high doses of insulin (a fat storing hormone). Once that sensitivity was affected by the bypass, the weight just fell off.
I also LOG EVERYTHING....good or bad. I use Livestrong MyPlate and have for 5 years. But I have not skipped a single day since June 2011. Keeps me honest and I know how many CHO and PRO Ive put in and how much is left. I have lots of web resources to help me find foods that will work for me. I dont cook differently for me than my family. I make adjustments so everyone benefits.

I now weight 151 and wear size 4-8 depending on the brand. I cannot even believe I say that.  I             never EVER was in single digit sizes, so this blows me away.
