  1. I was wondering if any of you specifically asked about urinary catheters during surgery. Does anyone know if they would have a problem allowing me to to have a suprapubic catheter rather then a urethral? I just really do not want a urethral catheter. EDIT: All do respect, allow me to rephrase I HAVE DECIDED I DO NOT WANT A URETHRAL CATHETER. A SUPAPUBIC ONE IS OK. HOW DO I GO ABOUT MAKING AN OFFICIAL LEGAL REQUEST FOR THIS? HOW DO I WITHDRAW MY CONSENT FROM A URETHRAL CATHETER. If you liked your urethral cath. GOOD! I am happy for you. Please stop being dismissive of my feelings and belittling the fact that I don't want one because you liked yours. It's really becoming upsetting. Every time I get an update and hope to see help, I see another version of "You're overreacting, it's fine." Please, stop doing this.

    Catheters

Yes, I did, happily. I told them straight up I would not consent to a urinary catheter and he said it was alright and we'd discuss it more closer to surgery when we talk about all the other specifics of my care. So, I'm going to bring it back up then. :-) Thanks! Are you hoping for no caths as well?

    Catheters

Thats ok. I'm sorry if I came across as a bit aggressive. I've just been having people respond that way in my RL so much that seeing it online, too, really frustrated and upset me. I wasn't necessarily angry, it was just a 'wtf' situation. Thats all. I mean, when you keep going to people with a decision you've made or the like and you keep getting people not addressing your question. It had more to do with frequently getting the same responses then anyone in particular. Thanks for understanding, though, I really appreciate that. :-)

    Catheters

Ummm, so, I found in this passage in my hospitals web page You should not be subjected to any procedure without voluntary, competent and understanding consent or that of your legally authorized representative. But, it doesn't say where I start. I mean, I want written and signed acknowledgement of the fact that I do not give consent to this. Does anyone know who I should contact? And @@MamaTo3inNH - That SUCKS! Thats my favorite position! LOL.

    Catheters

Oh, thanks. :-) I have never had a catheter and I'm fine with a suprapubic catheter (one that goes through my abdomen), its the urethral catheter I won't submit to. I totally understand! LOL. I am kind of excited about not having to move to pee, though a little weirded out there will be a bag. Hahaha. XD I mean, like I said, I've only had three infections (none from catheters) but I am not willing to risk it. I plan to call tomorrow and ask about it. A lot of people have said they slept most of the first day as well. Thank you for replying. I wanted to make sure I expressed my gratitude and clarify that I just don't want anything in my urethra. Teehee

    Catheters

Oh, not with a catheter and its not that I'm assuming anything about the hospital or the nurses, I just only recently got insurance after 10 yrs of not having it and I had a TERRIBLE UTI a few yrs back that I had trouble getting rid of. I mean, my vagina and urethra are just two places that really dedicate themselves when they get infected. LOL. I've only had 3 infections between the two, but I don't want to tempt fate in any way at all. Especially considering I've never had a catheter. Plus, I'm also just not psychologically comfortable with the idea, though the discomfort is secondary to the other concern, paired together, this is a huge issue for me and I would seriously delay my surgery or pay more out of pocket to just have an extra hole in my abdomen.
  7. Thank you! That definitely makes me feel better about this whole thing; the fact that its temporary. He gave me the impression he wants me to watch my carbs after surgery, too, as a part of whatever diet I choose after surgery, but I know that can be done. XD
  8. Heres the thing; The only time I've both felt healthy and was able to maintain my weight, I was vegan. I miss it. My first priority RIGHT NOW is to lose weight (40lbs by October), but I'd like to do it without eating meat and my system is sensitive to dairy, so while I can eat certain things (hard cheeses, yogurt and cottage) without too much problem, I can't have a lot of it. The surgeon wants me to go on a ketogenic diet. I'm ok with that but really upset with the amount of meat they are suggesting. I don't want to drone on and on, because I don't want people to think I judge them for their dietary choices, it just really bothers me to eat meat and the amount that they are suggesting is ENORMOUS! (most meat has no carbs and is high protein) I spiritually can't do that. I'm willing to give in and eat meat several times a week in order to add variation and follow the diet more easily, but that is the most I can do. Does anyone else on this diet have any suggestions of other things I can eat? Because right now the list is dark leafy greens, mushrooms, seitan(if made with vital wheat gluten and not flour) and tofu. I can do a lot with these, but if any one has anything to add, I'd deeply appreciate it.

    What to tell the children

I'm very happy so many of you were up front with your kids! I am not a parent, but I am a child care provider and, currently, an adult child stuck at home (changing that). I think its a sign of respect to your children to tell them the truth and very beautiful. Most kids are smarter then parents think and it's kind of insulting to their intelligence to lie about big things like this. Besides, when you go to them and share something personal like this, they might, as they get older, feel more comfortable doing the same to you. Not all kids feel comfortable talking to their parents about things they find personal; weight, sex, what college they want to go to... whatever, so when you start allowing yourself to be a bit vulnerable to them and share something like this honestly, they learn from that example. Sorry, did I say too much for a non-parent? I should say, I've done the same with the 2 little girls I watch (7 and 9). They found it interesting.
  10. I right there with you! I just made my first payment and had my consultation today! I know they'll be bumps in the road, but he wants to get my in the OR before Halloween! So, if I can lose the preop weight he wants (35-40lbs) and the insurance approves me fast, I could have my surgery before the end of the year! My goal is it have the operation done before my 30th b-day in January. There were a lot of things I wanted to do for my 30th (its a big one) and I had to choose, so this will be my bday gift to myself. XD You wanna hold hands and jump and down and squeal with me?! LOL

    Your pre-op diet?

I'm new here, too, and haven't seen my nutritionist yet, either, but he suggested, preop, I go low carb high protein. A ketogenic diet. He also said I could use Atkins, but he thinks thats dangerous long term and that keto is more sustainable and closer to how I'll have to eat afterwards, anyway. I wish I could help you more.
  12. I think you need to stay realistic. He's not smoking enough any more to have a 'smokers cough' anyway. After your surgery, I'd still commit to not smoking for at least a month, but smoking as little as you do a month isn't that bad. There are people that STILL drink everyday and I've seen more deaths attributed to that then smoking. For you, its just a 'treat' a few times a month, thats fine! Quitting smoking caused my grandma a lot of depression. She hates it. After a few years, she started begging her kids to smoke around her because she wanted the second hand smoke. Five years on and she's miserable, so it irks me and everyone is jumping on this bandwagon. Just like everything else; if you only do it in moderation, like you are, and know when to abstain, you should be perfectly fine. I'd still quit for the recommended amount of time of the few months before and the month of surgery. You may not want a cig after, but if you do, just remember to leave it at one or two.
  13. I know sleep is important, - but it's not even technically "day 1" yet and I'm too stoked to sleep. http://t.co/RCmbEonjWq
