Could you have succeeded without the band?
juliek replied to debi717's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Wow, you have some great responses here! I have just something a little different to add. 1st, I have been on every diet known to man and have never been successful. I was on the yoyo of lose 30 gain 50. I am convenienced that if I never went on a diet I would probably only weight about 200 lbs. Which when you are looking at a top weight of 366, 200 doesn't sound so bad. Anyway, in going thru all the tests for the band, one thing I discoved about my body is that my stomach empties abnormally fast. People would say, hey just eat til you feel full, well, I never felt full until I had the band! In the stomach emptying test, I was told to expect to be at the hospital for 4 hours, when they did the first check at 30 minutes, my stomach was completely empty, and the dr said they probably could have checked it at 20 minutes with the same results. So, not only did I have the emotional eating issues, the slow metabolism issues, etc, my stomach also worked against me. I have lost over 100 lbs and trust me when I say I haven't been the best band patient. I still eat junk food (severely limited now), and still have issues with emotional eating, and don't exercise nearly as much as I should, yet I am still losing weight. Good luck with your decision! -
Wow, I am actually quite the opposite. I was fairly regular before surgery, and have only been visited twice since then - last time in December. so totally not missing it at all!

How much weight did you lose the first month?
juliek replied to ginger's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I lost about 10 lbs the first 4 weeks. -
My oldest daughter was 8 when I had the surgery and she knew of it almost from my first appt with my surgeon. She also went to visit the surgeon with me on one occasion to ask questions. She is very into it. She is also one of the main reasons I did this as she is starting to be overweight. My losing weight has been good for her. She hasn't lost any weight but has maintained her current weight for over a year (which her ped says is the goal for a child her age, to maintain current weight until her height catches up). I have actually had several surgeries, (including spine) so this one didn't phase her too much. My twins were only 3 so they just knew I was going away over night.

What are the High Protein drinks you would recommend the most Or way of mixing powder
juliek replied to shell04937's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I LOVE New-Whey liquid Protien - it is 25 grams of protein comes in a little tube and drink it down over ice - no mixing or anything. When it is cold, it is almost like drinking down a jello shot -
That is AWESOME! Don't you just love it when that happens!

Something similar happened to me ... only I was on one of those swings that lift up high - it did lock, but then the swing wouldn't lift! talk about embarressing! All those people could see that the swing wouldn't lift off - YUCK! I can't wait until next year when I am going to go on every ride there is! Good luck with your surgery.

Some larger pills can be hard to swallow and trust me when I say you don't want one to get stuck. Nothing worse then undigested meds coming back the other way, not to mention the pain of the stuck pill. I now get any antibotic I take in liquid.

ABsolutely NO! I have never been this successful with any weight loss plan. Best thing I ever did for myself, even with the side effects!

Not my husband, but my daughter has definetly benefited. My hubby has a normal weight so he doesn't need to lose. My baby girl, on the other had has inherited her mommy's body. She is eating healthier and moving more now that I have been banded. In a discussion with her ped, he said at her age (she is 9) the goal is NOT to lose weight but to maintain your current weight until your height catches up. At her last checkup she not only maintained her weight for over a year, but did lose 2 lbs. We weren't trying to have her lose, it just worked out that way. It is a tightrope I walk with her. I surely DO NOT want her to suffer the way I did, but I don't want her to be worried about her weight, either. I remember my mom harking on me all the time and I don't want to do that. So what we are doing seems to be working. Healthy Snacks, no sugar drinks, moving more.

WOW, that is wonderful! I love Roller coasters but haven't gotten on one in about 12 years, since I tried to get on one and the seat belt wouldn't fit - talk about embarressed! I could probably try again now. Good for you!!!! :clap2:

I do forget about - however if I eat something bad it reminds right quick enough - LOL. I have been banded over a year though so it is not constantly in my thoughts.

How long will soreness lat at port site?
juliek replied to Buckeye62's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I think I was sore for like 3 to 4 days, not bad at all. Welcome to Bandland and good luck on your journey! -
Wow, powerful thread! For me, it was when my husband had heart problems and was diagnosed as diabetic at the same time - what?! - he is the thin, healthy one and he had to have heart surgery - scared the you know what out of me! I became very scared for my 3 beautiful girls. They need to have at least one healthy parent and I want to be there for them as they grow up and someday have children of their own. Plus my 3 yr old twins (at the time) could totally out run me - that is very scary! It is bad enough when they run in opposite directions, but I couldn't even catch one of them - not good at all!
