@@pato_3472 I agree those protein shakes taste terrible! I was drinking chocolate Bariatric Advantage for a while, and it was only tolerable when prepared in a blender with half a banana and some caffeine free instant coffee. Or with a spoonful of peanut butter. I'm having a much easier time adding the unflavored whey protein to my soups and smoothies. It's not changing the flavor and if I add water, it doesn't change the texture either. Are you allowed to add anything to your shakes to improve the flavor?

5 days post op and really really struggling.
GeminiSleever replied to rhondatk's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
@@rhondatk I was just sleeved on Monday and I think I wrote posts very similar to yours in the first couple of days. My body chemistry was way out of whack so I was dry heaving every morning, having tastes linger on my tongue from everything I consumed which made me feel even more nausea, and I was in pain. I started to regret my decision to even have the surgery. Today marks five days post op for me and, while I do still have a lot of muscle soreness, I feel great. This is the first day I haven't dry heaved. My taste buds are back to normal. I'm still exhausted but my energy is up. And I have felt hungry today, though I have deprived myself of satisfying that hunger because I couldn't feel too sure. Hang in there. It gets better!! If you need someone to talk to please feel free to inbox me. I also wanted to add that the only things I was able to do in those days were walk small distances and sip ice cold Water. I believe those things helped me. -
I'm glad you had a better day, Pato!!! It's only uphill from here. It feels like it will be forever until I can actually chew again (and even longer until I can satisfy my popcorn craving), but I'm hanging in there and trying to find the bright spots where ever possible. How are you taking your protein in during the clear phase? Today is the first day I could have any because it creates a viscous liquid rather than a clear one.

Welcome!! I have found awesome support and help on this site.

Congrats on getting through it!! I'm glad that your recovery seems to be going well and that you escaped some of the awful post-op side effects I dealt with this week. (I was sleeved on 2/9/15.) if you need a buddy to commiserate with just send me a message!

Patricia, my nutritionist outlined a meal plan for the first five weeks post op, including suggestions on what to eat and at what times. It has helped a lot. The clear liquids was very rough for me to get enough fluids. Aside from the nausea, I was dealing with taste bud issues. Everything savory lingered on my tongue no matter how many times I brushed my teeth. Everything unsavory was far too sweet. The constant sipping on ice Water got me through it. As well as sugar free Popsicles and the broth from Lipton noodle Soup. Taking a sip every 5-10 minutes would often result in me getting in 20oz within a two hour period. I started full fluids today and it's such a relief. Every two hours I have a 4oz fruit and yogurt smoothie mixed with unflavored whey Protein isolate. At the end of the evening I can have a liquid soup. I bought the dole garden Soups (tomato garden basil and carrot ginger) and the progresso artisan soup (curried butternut squash) and I'm just looking forward to having something different. Chin up, it gets better!

They talk about walking a lot and it's true. Walking while sipping on water helps a lot with releasing the gas. I'm four days post op and I'm still not completely rid of it, but I have at least gotten the majority out. Don't worry, it will pass. -
Day 4 post op ...still struggling

I can't tell when I'm experiencing hunger either. I've been erring on the side of it being pain since I really cannot tolerate the flavors of anything at the moment. -

I was also sleeved on 2/9/15 and the dry heaves are finally down to a dull roar. Now I only get them when I first wake up in the morning. I brush my teeth and pop a zofran and I'm good to go. I still haven't experienced hunger but my stomach is growling. I can't tolerate sipping anything but water because I'm afraid that other tastes will linger on my tongue. And though I have dreamed about eating food, seeing it in the flesh is unappetizing. I hope things get better when I can switch to full liquids on Sunday. -
Post op day three: sensitive taste and smell

If I can get through the day without the tastes lingering in my mouth even that would be an accomplishment. -
Post op day three: sensitive taste and smell
GeminiSleever posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think I've finally gotten a handle on the gas pain and now I can sip my liquids with less discomfort. The problem is that my sense of smell and taste are suddenly SO sensitive. I tried ice cubes and I could literally taste the freezer. Water and I taste the plastic bottle it comes in. Adding things to the water? Forget it. The sweetness sends me into dry heaves. I even stepped outside for fresh air and could smell every single foul odor in the air. I know it's still early, but please tell me that this is something that eventually goes back to normal. Otherwise I may never enjoy eating or drinking again. -
Day 4 post op ...still struggling

I also had surgery on Monday and I'm glad to see that I'm not alone in my regret. I get so thirsty and envious of those around me who can just chug a glass of Water without issue. Why did I take that for granted when I was able to?? Everything I put into my mouth I taste on my tongue for hours, even after repeatedly brushing my teeth. My sense of taste and smell are just that sensitive. I've thrown out all the little room fresheners that I loved pre-op. Finally though, the gas pains are at a dull roar. My surgeon has been calling me regularly and I am getting plenty of assurances from others who have had the procedure that this part sucks for everyone. I am planning to go back to school on Monday. I hope I can reestablish some form of normal by then. Good luck to you all in your recoveries!! -

Favorite Liquid Diet Food/Drink

I drank the broth from wonton soup. It was satisfying, filling, and flavorful. I haven't tried it yet post-op. I'm too afraid to hate it. As for the Protein, I drank the chocolate Bariatric Advantage blended with half a banana and/or a little instant coffee and then put in the freezer until Ice cold. It was the only tolerable way. Forgot to add: adding lemon pepper to regular broth was great. -
Post op day three: sensitive taste and smell
GeminiSleever replied to GeminiSleever's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can't imagine ever being hungry again. I'm having trouble deciding if that's a good thing or a bad thing. Obviously I want to lose weight, but I don't want to give up enjoying my life either. -

Thanks! The whole thing really is a journey, isn't it? Each day brings a new surprise, some unpleasant. Most unpleasant. I can't wait to get i the good parts. My surgeon called me and told me I can start full liquids on Sunday. I haven't even been able to tolerate broths yet! -
