Random Post-Op Questions
ShellMilliner replied to jm726's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@jm726 Try varying the temperature of your Water. Cold water can cause spasms in some people at first. Room temp is what most people prefer. I had the hardest time with plain water after my surgery, but the minute I added lemon, lime, crystal light or infused water, boom the pain was gone! I read somewhere that water has a high surface tension and swallowing it post surgery makes it feel heavy like rocks, but by adding something to it like a squeeze of lemon the surface tension is decreased. I haven't actully looked into this theory, but I can say it does work for me! Keep in mind, you were just pumped full of fluids for your surgery, once you are up and moving around more and your Protein and liquid consumption starts increasing you will start dropping quiker. I'm 6 weeks out and it still takes me more than an hour to drink an 11 oz premier Protein shake. It just feels heavy and fills me quick. You are doing great...as long as you do your part your surgery will do its part! -
@Swampdoggie WINNING!

How about a couple shots of tequila? They're small right?
-
@@wannaBthinsoon - If I could do a shot first, I just might. Haahaa, I'm such a chicken.

Yikes! I've thought about it but just never mustered up the guts. I only have one right now that is dead in the middle of my chest right above the cleavage, so every v-neck I wear you can see it. I'm trying some liquid stuff called tag off but it says it can take up to 8 weeks for it to dry out and fall off.

Congratulations! Wishing you an uncomplicated surgery and speedy recovery!
-
I think by your statement you are on the right path. They know what your plans are you are willing to accept and identify the problems and start working through it. You are going to do great!
-
I agree wholeheartedly, however, on another support site there were two individuals that no matter what the person said they would respond harshly and negatively on every aspect of the procedure. One of the responses I had here was literally a cut and paste from the other site which contained false information. I don't mind contructive discussions or even if someone disagrees, but I draw the line on spreading fear from non-fact checked information. One quick edit: You can call me out, and maybe it is a sensitivity thing, but I don't think on a WLS support site you should have to defend your surgery type decision, especially once you've already done it.

Having a hard time 1st day liquid diet
ShellMilliner replied to Jaymmie Hengle's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
SF jello! Do they limit your shakes? Often you can call your NUT and ask if you can add in another shake if you are starving. Warm helps to give you a more satisfied feeling, think tea and broths. Lastly, with myself and most people your body adjusts after the 3rd day. Then you just need to fight off the head hunger. When it happens get up go for a walk or stretch, drink more Water, or my favorite go brush your teeth. I know for me I hate to eat after my teeth were just brushed. -
Oh my, yes drink your Water. The first sign of dehydration (besides thrist of course) is headache. Why the angst? I can't say for sure, but I do know there are many people that are very "protective" of their surgery. Because the SADI/SIPS is a newer procedure it doesn't have a long history of results to look back on. Most of the negative comments come from people asking why choose something that hasn't been proven over a standard. My thought is stomach stapling was standard (not sure any doc performs that anymore), LapBand was popular but years later many people are requiring revisions (my doc doesn't perform lapband any longer). RNY had and in some circles is still considered the "gold standard" but is quickly being replaced by the sleeve. The full DS requires more time under anestesia and recovery can be harder. Often (not always) dumping, gas and bowel issues were known side effects. I look at it this way, ALL WLS procedures as well as ALL medical procedures were once new. They are constantly improving and learning what works best for various individuals. Imagine the first person that received a pace maker or organ transplant, chemo, radiation, etc... I feel I'm doing what is best for me based on my own research and discussions with them doctors. I would never judge or belittle another person on their decision. You make the choice that is right for you. We are a community that is here to support one another through advice and occassional butt kickings. Akin, to the saying if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything. On here, if you aren't offering support (and in many cases just copying and pasting comments directly from another user on a different board) then don't comment. Of course I might be a little old fashioned in that sense. Oh and used to play the SIMS many, many moons ago.

Have you tried premier protien shakes? I drank the chocolate during my pre-op and it wasn't bad...very cold! They have 30 grams of Protein to boot. Drink, drink, drink too...add lemon or lime to your Water or a SF flavoring if you like. I picked up an individual infuser cup at bed bath and beyond and get creating making infused waters with fruits and herbs. Just don't eat the fruit. Remember your body will adjust, but you will have head hunger especially with old habits like snacking while watching tv, or sitting down. For those times get up and walk or stretch or my favorite...brush your teeth. I never like eating after brushing!

Call the Bariatrics police!
ShellMilliner replied to jackiemc1987's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I just have one question. Why would you deliberately and intentionally do something that can harm yourself after just going through a procedure meant to give you a second chance at a healthier life? Something that goes against every NUT and doctor's advice that I've ever seen. A little something to think about. Alcohol is a diuretic. Now think about how your stomach has been altered and the amount of Water and Protein you need to consume daily. Your chances of dehydrating skyrocket when consuming alcohol and even more so in extremely large quantities. This post both saddens and angers me, especially when you think about how many people want/need this surgery for a better life and are denied or have to pay out of pocket and you see people being nothing more than irresponsible. @LipstickLady I'm right there with you...I said it, it's out there. -
Drainage catheter
ShellMilliner replied to Jaymmie Hengle's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@Jaymmie Hengle Mine was removed the morning I was discharged as well. But I have read where others have theirs in for an additional 5 days or so. Find out from your doctor what their standard procedure is. -
@45678 How long is your pre-op diet and what does it consist of? Reframe your thinking to start. The pre-op diet is not about losing weight at this point, but all about shrinking your liver. When you are obese your liver get larger, fatty and floppy and hangs like a bib over your stomach. Your liver becomes an obstruction during surgery that must be lifted and moved out of the way. To reduce the chance of nicks and speed your recovery most all doctors require some sort of pre-op diet. It is for your health and benefit. @@NZ_gal is right usually after day 3 it gets much easier, your body begins to adjust. Your head hunger will remain and that is a matter of telling yourself you are not hungry and why you are doing this. When it hits, get a hot cup of tea or broth or take a walk with a bottle of Water. That is the other thing, drink, drink, drink your water until you feel like the bathroom has become your second home. It helps!

Article about botched surgery
ShellMilliner replied to AmyFromCincy's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That's very sad. I wouldn't call it a botched surgery though. It was a reaction to medication. I wonder if she knew about her medication allergy prior to the surgery? Unfortunately, this is how many people find out they are allergic to certain medications. I had a good freind that came close to dying after a PCL, MCL. ACL knee repair at a fantastic hospital. She never knew she was allergic to morphine. Her first indication was increased pain so they pushed more pain meds then she went into severe resperitory distress. In the end she recovered, but undiagnosised medication allergies are very scary business. -
@chunkylover I need a good swift kick in the butt occasionally to straighten me out and give me a reality check. Luckily, there are plenty of people on here that will do just that! That is why I love it here!

@stevodreo I had the SADI on April 1st and am doing very well. You can read about some of my experience throughout this thread: http://www.bariatricpal.com/topic/338303-may-2015-sips-patients/ I'd be more than happy to discuss any details you would like. I'm very happy with my recovery, weight loss and lack of unpleasant side effects (dumping, gas, bowel, etc...). Ultimately, it is your desicion as to what is best for you. You will see in the other thread two of the main reasons I chose this procedure was my BMI was over 50 and I had extremely high triglycerides (lipids/fatty liver). This method is proven to very quickly resolve those issues. I also have severe obstructive sleep apnea. I will be making an appointment for a new sleep study/evaluation once I drop below 250 to see if the CPAP pressure requires adjustment or if I can get rid of the machine yet. (crossing fingers).

@@wascott - My NUT has posted lots of receipes for all post-op phases. I will likely start a thread and post more in the future. Best of luck to you on your upcoming surgery, may it be speedy and uncomplicated.
-
When did you start your pre-op and for how long? Mine was two weeks and I was allowed a no carb, low fat, lean meat and veg/day. Definitely mix up your flavors so your tastebuds don't get bored. I settled into the routine after day 3 and then it wasn't so bad. I think your body starts accepting the change. Keep reminding yourself the purpose of the pre-op diet is to shrink the size of your liver, making your surgery easier on the surgeon. It isn't really about weight loss at this point. It helps with reframing your focus on your why. You're doing great, just remember when changing up milks to watch the amount of carbs and double check with you Doc or NUT. Every doctor is very different so you will receive many different answers on here.

Like I said I really didn't need three weeks off, but I had the time. I actually spent a good portion of the last week catching up with my sister who just moved back to town the day of my surgery. We did lots of walking together. Two weeks was fine but you will have some tiredness.

Anyone try new Fairlife milk?
ShellMilliner replied to aSleeveStory's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I saw it at the store just the other day but they were sold out of skim and only had chocolate (lots of sugar...darn it), whole and 2%. I've really been wanting to try it. -
Remember, give your NUT a call. Doctor's advice varies greatly on what is allowed and not. I haven't tried these yet but here are a few receipes my NUT gave out. Peanut Butter Protein Ball Recipe 1 cup All Natural Peanut Butter 2 cups Unflavored or vanilla Flavored Protein shake Stevia liquid to taste 1 tsp. Vanilla extract (optional) 4 cups Of any combination of the following ingredients if permitted on your phase of the diet. Sunflower, pumpkin, or Flax Seeds, Peanuts, Crushed Nuts, Roasted Soybeans, sugar free chocolate chips, Granola, oatmeal, Raisins, Dried Cranberries, Oat Bran, Wheat Germ Mix the Protein powder, liquid stevia, and peanut butter together in bowl. Next, add any additional ingredient like nuts or fruit. Using an Ice Cream scoop, roll equal size scoops of the batter into balls. Refrigerate on a tray with parchment paper. Protein Brownies 1 scoop Flavored Protein Powder (Chocolate, Vanilla, or Peanut Butter) 1 Tbsp. Natural Peanut Butter Milk (A few drops to make the consistency like a thick batter) Mix all ingredients together in a small glass bowl or Pyrex Microwave for 30-45 seconds (depending on your microwave) Homemade Protein Bars 6 scoops Egg Protein (flavor of your choice) 6 egg Egg Whiles 5 cups Milk or Water 2 cups Flax meal 1 cup Splenda (or Stevia) 1 tbs. Baking Powder 1 tbs. Vanilla Extract Cinnamon to taste Mix all ingredients together and bake at 350 until done.
