Ok, so I need to tell my surgeon he screwed up on my sleeve but don't want to do it in a way to anger him. I was sleeved on feb 23rd and as soon as I was on solid food I knew something wasn't right, I mean out of the gate it took 3x the food to satisfy me as it did my mother and aunt who were eight months out of surgery satisfy me as it did my mother and aunt who were eight months out of surgery. Now the other day I grilled large porter house t- bones for the family and sat down at the table with the intentions on just eating off the fillet side until I was full. Intentions on just eating off the fillet side until I was full. So I'm sitting there eating and talking to my dad when I notice I just ate an ENTIRE 20 0Z steak! This is dience protine were talking about here, I'm suppose to get full off 4 ounces of it! Needless to say my weight loss hasn't been anything to write home about... I know he will try blaming me for over eating and stretching it out but the fact is when I was just released on solid food and my tummy was still swollen like I said above I comfortably was able to hold 3x more that my relatives that were 8 months out. I know I should not have tested it that soon but I wanted to see where my sleeve compared to theirs. So how do I tell the doc that he made my sleeve wayy to large and put me through a surgery for nothing? I do know I was the last case that day and it was 2 pm before anesthesia even came and spoke to me, the surgeon hadn't broke from lunch and I'm sure was tired but come on, I would have rather had it out off than to rush though it and mess up due to being tired. Advise please.

How do I tell my surgeon he screwed up?

Thank you, some helpful reply's came in :-) I do plan on meeting with him for my follow upon the 12th and if I'm not completely satisfied with that he says I will visit another surgeon for a second opinion, Ive read stories of people going to get a second opinion only to find out that the original surgeon only took 50% of what they were suppose to and from what I'm feeling when I eat, this seems to be my case. I do know he used a size 40 bougie on me (he says thats all he uses), which if made tight should only be a couple bites more than even the smallest of bougies, not 4-6x more. I feel he was to quick to blame my eating habits even after telling him "hey, If i want to I can hold 20+ oz of solid protein" which he said was impossible before he done the scope yesterday. Even before leaving the hospital, the other patients were struggling to slip Water and I was drinking a 16 oz bottle like nothing was different. Yes, my volume has been reduced from pre surgery by probably 10-15%, for example pre sleeve I could eat meal XYZ and still eat desert, now if I eat that same meal, eating desert would make me to uncomfortable. -

I eat only protine and have for some time. Should I change to all carbs? Cakes and pies? Maybe that will control my hungar!? Are you not listnig me? It takes 5 or 6 times more protine (chicken, steak, etc) to satisfy my hunger than what absolutely stuffs abnormal sleeve patient. I DO NOT eat to the point I'm stuffed, just to satisfatication. This does not sound like a "perfectly sized sleeve" But my oppagies for thinking the sleeve would reduce the amount of food it takes to satisfy some one. I can't believe j was stupid enough to think that. BTW I also saw the dietitian 2 weeks ago, the only criticism she had to my food log was to try and get more fruit and was In disbelief of the volume it took to satisfy me and stated it points to the sleeve being overly large. But maybe she to is under the missconseptiln that the sleeve reduces the amount it takes to satisfy some one. -

Update: after several reschedules for verrious reason (death in family, work, dr vacation, and so on) I had an upper GI today so the surgeon could look in my stomach. He came in the recovery room and basically said the sleeve was normal and it must be my eating habbets. I then pointed to my mother who was sitting beside me and said the. Why can I eat comfortably 6X what stuffs her and her sleeve is 2 years old. His reply was "well your a bigger person" then got frustrated and said listen I can make it smaller if the insurance allows it, but you won't be happy with the side effects. Then turns to the nurse and said 2 weeks and walked away. So what is your all take on all this? I guess it's normal to be able to consume LARGE amounts of dince protine after a sleeve and not feel stuffed? Thomas -

You are absolutely right. I have no doubt that you had no intention of eating such a huge steak. I know that if I eat while doing something else, I may be able to eat more than I should. You absolutely call your doctor and get some answers. Clearly this is 100% his fault and you did nothing wrong. Your sleeve should absolutely do the work for you, because like you said, why have it if you need to exhibit any will power or pre-portioning? That's crazy! And yes, if everyone else had it on their plate, you should have it, too. I'd be furious. Call your doctor and get some answers. You are paying him, you are in ultimately in charge. Who cares if he gets mad? Not your problem. Good luck to you!! LOL... -

Thank you to the last few replys, I did make an appointment with my dr today, it is scheduled for the 14th of July. In the mean time i will try measuring out 1/2 cup of food per meal and see what happens, Tho I really don't think I would be remotely satisfied only having 1 egg for a meal like another poster said in their example. I really hope to have the swallow test done and get some answers, but to be honest.. I don't think I would go through another surgery even if it comes back as being twice the size as it should be. -

You guys keep suggesting I set out to eat a 20 oz steak when I've made it clear that's the farthest thing from the truth! It was on my plate because it was fresh off the grill just as every one else's was, we were at a cook out and left over meat was going home with the person it was plated to. For the 3rd time, My intention was to have the 4ish oz felet side and that's it, I did NOT set out to eat the whole thing, it just kinda happened before I realized it. Another concern of some of you was if I am following the Drs rules, yes to the best of my knowledge I am, he has no restrictions on volume but the paper says we should eat until comfortable and no more, and to stop after 20 mins. It does say however that our capisaty is about 1/2 cup which is clearly not the case with me. I didn't progress to solid foods until I got the ok either. Some of you say that we can't rely on the sleeve to reduce out intake but should rely on our will power. Are you serious? Why did you have the sleeve in the first place if you could simply rely on your own will power? I did t come here to get slammed about having to large a piece on my plate to start with when we were away from home, having a cookout and every one was being handed the same cut of meat off the grill! I came to ask how to bring up my concerns that it seems my sleeve is much large than it should be without making my surgeon mad. If your gonna howl about the meat shouldn't have been there to start with please go back and real ALL my replays to this thread first! -

Wow, some of you are right down hateful lol. I say I was talking to my dad while eating a steak for a cook out with the intentions of only have the filet mignon side and was able to consume a 20 oz steak without realizing it and I'm blasted because something might not be wrong???? Let me ask you this, can any of you eat 20 ounces of dense Protein? No? Then something is wrong lol. My stats were stRted in 2007 before I had a lapband, it was removed last June due to complications and the sleeve done in February so they look better than they are. But I've lost 20 lbs since leaving the hospital with the sleeve. I might not be the staple for doing everything by the book, but that's not why I came here. The reason I came here is because I ate a 20oz steak and that should be physically impossible and I need to know how to bring this up to my surgeon without making him mad or making he feel like in saying he don't know what he's doing. -
8 weeks out and able to ear a LARGE volume?
thomas1984 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hey every one, so my brother had his sleeve done about a month before me and he is now 8 weeks post up, but seems like he eats a LOT of food. We had the same surgeon and he uses a size 40 Bouge. Last night I witnessed my brother eat 2 hotdogs with the bread and say he still doesn't feel "stuffed" and could likely eat another. is this normal? we have the same doc so does this mean I'm also doomed to eating as large of portions as before surgery just to get the satisfied feeling? feeling so sad for him and scared for me right now! It just doesn't seem possible that he could hold that much food. -
Sorry for the low Info title but theres no other way to put it. My weight is just stuck! I came home from the hospital and lost 2-3 lbs a day for the first 7 days then on day 8-15 nothing, not a single pound! I've heard of the week 3 stall but a stall at 1 week? Come on that not heard of or at least ibhavnt hear of it. It's not like I'm a light weight either, I'm stuck at 392 lbs with a bmi of over 50 AND I'm a guy which means the weight should be falling off me, I just don't under stand. Any one have any ideas on what's going on or what I can do to get the weight moving in the right direction again?
-
I think you miss understood rep, I've lost a total of 12lbs since surgery plus the couple lbs of fluid from the iv but it was all with in the first 7 days, and absolutely nothing for the last 8 days, it seems way to soon for a stall, I've not heard of any one stalling at 7 days post op.
-
Has any one been moved to pureed at 1 week post op? I as because my surgeon called me today to check up on me and I let him know I couldn't even look at another Protein shake and he told me because of my size he really wanted me shooting for 1200 cals a day if i could and gave me the go ahead to move on to Soups and other pureed foods, Just told me not to go trying to eat a steak today, lol.

Holy cow! Should I have been able to eat that much?
thomas1984 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I got a call from my Dr's nurse this morning on my way to the store and I informed her i was feeling a little weak and had been taken some dizzy spells, after going over what I've been eating and drinking (mind you I haven't dropped any weight in 3 days after being on a 2lb a day loosing streak) she tells me I need more calories and suggested maybe a little mash taters. so Im at the store and I swing my the deli and grab the smallest container of mash taters and gravy they have (1 cup) and bright it home, seasoned it and figured Id eat out of it a few times that a few bites would fill me. well before I knew it I was scraping the residue out of the bottom of the cup to finish it! How on earth is this possible? I mean I'm ONLY 10 days out! Is it likely that i some super huge sleeve or is this normal? I was just starting to feel full when it was gone... Soo heart broken right now. -

Thanks for the kind words guys, so considering the consistency of mash taters and gravy, If It would have been cottage cheese or chili I should feel ful on roughly half a cup right? -
So I was sleeved on Tuesday the 23rd and other than BAD gas pains the first evening I've felt pretty good, was released about 24 hrs after the procedure and haven't looked back. Weight loss has been averaging 2lbs a day tho i must confess I'm not meeting my liquid requirements and have started to find excuses not to drink another Protein drink. After being released I took a stool softener for the first 3 days as I didn't want to be straining with a sore tummy and yesterday had my first BM, great I think, that came out smooth, lol well today I've had the screaming diarrhea all day long and am not sure if this is normal or not, I mean I must be 3-4 lbs lighter than when I woke this morning, its that bad. So is this something that is normal and to be expected? I understand liquid in liquid out but didn't think it would be this bad.

Ok, I know a rant is not how I should introduce my self but Im just frustrated! To start I was banded in march of 2008, My highest weight was 465 lbs and I lost down to 382 by the day of surgery. Things were sorta bad from the start, My doctor didn't want to give me fills because she said I wasn't losing fast enough and would only jump on to me when I went in so I tried to avoid it as much as possible. Finally at some where between 7 and 7.5 cc in a 14cc band I started losing weight, I was puking with every single meal (pretty much every bite) but I lost weight none the less. Then the GERD kicked in and it was BAD, it sent me to the ER several times thinking I was having a heart attack and I could not have any Fluid removed because my DOC went to a different state and no other surgeons would take me on. Finally after 2 years of acid reflux from hell she came back to practice in the same hospital where I had my band put in, I made an appointment right way and at 318 lbs she removed all my fluid to let me heal from the gerd. A couple months went by and my weight shot up to about 350 lbs and she added 1cc in my band and made me an app to come back in 2 weeks, well when I went back they informed me that she had moved back to her home country of romania and I would need to find another doc. I tried for months before I finally found a doc 2 hours away to see me, by the time I got an appointment I was weighing in at nearly 400 lbs. after seeing him a few times he had be back to 7cc and chronic diarrhea set in right away! But I lost down to 349 lbs in about 7 months until the gerd again got so bad I couldn't take it any longer and went for complete unfill witch immediately resolved the diarrhea but my weight shot back up to 380 lbs from 349 in about a month. I went back for another fill and was given 4cc and told to come back in 2 weeks and he would give me 2 more cc's but the very next day after the 4cc fill the diarrhea was back and had continued every since. When I went back for the 2 cc fill I told him about it and he told me that the only thing he can thing of is maybe the band is putting pressure on a nerve and causing it. He told me to see a gastro dr and rule out any thing else, and if it looks like its the band then he wants to remove it and do a sleeve 6 months later. I am afraid of going through another surgery (this time a permanent one) and having issues preventing me from losing the weight once again! Im fed up and wish I had never had the band done! Sorry for the rant, it had build up in me and I felt like I was going to explode! Thomas

For the longest time yeah.. but for the last year that ive had diarrhea, I been able to eat about anything I want.
-
So would bad gerd from the band being to tight be an indicator to having gerd issues with the sleeve? Just so its on the record I had only expieranced acid reflux a couple times in my life before being banded.
