    African American Sleevers

@@Joannaharris77 I don't think you can. The best you can do is to strength train when you are able to keep the gluteus muscles in shape.
  2. Thanks for this. I've wanted a tummy tuck since I was 22 years old. Now that I'm over 50, it's boobs too. In a perfect world, I'd get a thigh lift and brachioplasty too. For now though, I'll keep working on the weight loss. I've done so much research over the years, I'll need to find new docs...lol (they have retired now!)

    African American vsgers!

My granddaughter was 2 years old when I had the surgery. Her and my daughter lived with me. It was hard taking care of her, I tried my best not to lift her unless absolutely necessary, which was putting her in bed occasionally and definitely not for the first few weeks. You will need help. As for someone else and stalls, I lost 8 pounds total month 3 to 6. I was frustrated as there were weeks the scale didn't move. I did notice inches, a LOT! Take your measurements. I lost my original ones when my phone was lost/stolen, but I need to do new ones. This month alone, I've lost 4+ pounds so far. All in good time.

Personal Style -- How will I dress as a thin woman?

You look fabulous! I just took my granddaughter out roller skating last Saturday. It felt so good to move my body and not feel like a lump! As for more clothes, I received coupons in the mail from Bon-ton for $100 in clothes, shoes and makeup. The orange dress I bought for $11, the black skirt is pleather and has long fringe. Cost me $8.80, also picked up 3 pairs of shoes for $5.95. I keep getting coupons for $10 off $10, or $30 off $30 for Kmart or Sears. Only condition is that they can't be clearance. So, the rest of the coupons I'm getting underwear and socks for the homeless shelters. My style is still evolving...skinny jeans, wide leg, it's whatever I look in the mirror and think...Dang, look how far you've come. And "I ain't finished yet"

    What Is Your Latest NSV?

Knee boots that have the ankle zipper were the bane of my existence! My daughter had been wearing a pair someone bought me because I barely got them on, and they wouldn't go up my calves. They do now! NO, my darling daughter, you may NOT wear them this year....! NSV! (Can I also say that I teared up, it was THAT emotional.)
  6. I have been on so many diets starting when I was 13mand the doctor told me and my mother I needed to lose 5lbs. I was 140...that was enough to solidify my dislike of my body and weight for many decades. So here I am, 51 years old and a size 10-12 (2015 standards). I spent HOURS this past weekend going through my closets, attic and basement cedar closet trying on clothes. I am a clothes junkie! I found numerous items with the tags on them. Things I had forgotten about, things that were 'just a little tight, a size maybe" . And now they are falling off. I ended up with two very large and heavy boxes of clothes to donate. I had tried selling some things online and that was a disaster. Waste of my time and effort. I found some students to give them to, it makes me feel better about the NWT items. On another note, someone posted that this year is BoHo Chic and wide leg trousers and bell-bottoms are back. Lo and behold, up in the attic, in the box marked "skinny clothes" I found bright tops, long skirts, wide leg trousers and bell-bottom jeans. It's good to be this age and not have to follow tends to a "T". Especially since I'm loving my skinny jeans and intend to continue to wear them. (Shoes and boots, all 125+ pairs is another story) The red dress is vintage and a size 17...gotta love vanity sizing! Anyone else find a treasure in the attic or back of their closet?

    Wayyyyyyyyy too many clothes!

I call where I am right now round 2-3 of this year. The room that I took the pictures in was a bedroom, then made into my walk-in closet and is back to a spare room. The walls were lined with double clothing racks and where the mirror is, used to be floor to ceiling 6foot wide shoe shelves. The mesh crates are the remnants of it. Today a college friend moved in while she is finishing her last semester. She brought with her less than I take for an long weekend. I think she will be very good for me, as she eats clean, is pretty much a vegetarian and a minimalist. I KNOW I don't need all the stuff I have, it's finally sinking in that I'm winning this body back, pound by pound. And it is okay to let things go. It really is a new me in the mirror, inside and out!

    NSV- Throwing Out Yummy

@@AvaFern Thank you, I am not quite at the point of throwing things out without the guilt. I have bought the pretzel, ate part, took it home and ate it at two more occasions, finally throwing out the last bite. It must feel so good to just "throw it out" ! I'll continue to work on it. Congrats!

    Stress incontinence

It was actually one of the comorbidities on my surgeons list. Thank goodness it went away after surgery! I meant to say after the first month of weight loss after surgery.

Personal Style -- How will I dress as a thin woman?

I love this topic! I'm 51 and spent the last 3 years at a women's college with primarily traditional age students. I loved seeing the various styles on various shaped bodies. What I loved most was the confidence these young women had wearing their clothes. It brought out my inner wild child/sophisticated mama. I wear clothing based on my mood and the outing. I love my twinsets, boiled wool cardigans, and pencil skirts. I also love my leather pants, denim jackets and flowy maxi-dresses. I tend to dress for the occasion. . As fall approaches, I have a fabulous long leather coat, think Matrix, that I wear with these awesome chunky heeled boots that have buttons up the front. I used to sew outfits for myself from outfits I saw in magazines and in the stores. I'm so excited to set up my spare room and do this again. I have some great material that I purchased awhile ago that will be perfect for BoHo chic. Fringe and all!

    Buying the wrong size?

I actually bought a pair of pants two sizes too small in May. Because and this was a BIG because, I was able to get them on and my sister (who does NOT know and will not know if I can help it) said that I shouldn't get them, they don't fit. Guess what, now THEY FIT! I've had to give away some of my favorite clothes because my daughter told me I looked like I had a floppy diaper on under them. Yep, loving my sleeve!

    Low BMI and Gastric Sleeve

I had a lower BMI with multitude of comorbidities. HBP, GERD, the dreaded stress incontinence, and sleep apnea. I was told by people that I was "not that fat". Really? I couldn't go a flights of stairs without stopping. Now six months out, I've lost over 60 pounds, do Zumba in a class that meets on the 4th floor of an old factory (I run up the stairs! Warm up) I've "trotted" a 5k and in two weeks am doing a Rugged Maniac. I found a picture from a year ago and I look at that woman and think, she was so big and unhappy. I'm sooooo happy!

    African American vsgers!

I brought a bunch of stuff, Chapstick, toothbrush etc. I didn't use ANY of it. I was there one night. Slept most of the time, got up and walked the halls. My hospital gave me toothbrush, socks, mouthwash, etc. I got to admitting at 6a, was in surgery by 7:45, woke up in recovery...well medicated :-) , up to my room. No drain, my surgeon fixed a small hernia. I was out 3pm the next afternoon. I say bring what you feel you might need. I'm a person who would rather have too much than not have it.

    African American Sleevers

I OBVIOUSLY didn't get the quote part right... Live and learn! Yesterday was my birthday. What a change from last year! I spent most of the day with myself. Had my hair done, went shopping, light dinner and the movies. It felt really good to spend time with me, on me. Looking at last year and this year, I really am, finally fit 50's! (Still working on getting more fit!)

    African American vsgers!

Hair loss- you wouldn't know by the pictures, but I feel like I've lost a ton of hair. I'm going tomorrow to get my hair done. I'll definitely know after that what I'm working with. I'm not complaining as I LOVE my new body!

    African American Sleevers

Love this thread! I'm six months post-op. Down 59 pounds, only lost 8 the last three months. Not happy with the numbers, and really really trying to not let the scale dictate my success. My goal is weight, size and a pair of jeans I've saved from the only time I ever felt truly in shape. Anyone else have THAT article of clothing, outfit that was your thing?
  18. OMG, just found this thread again. How things have changed in six short months! China was the trip of a lifetime. I didn't swell up, was comfortable walking the many miles each day. At one point it was over 22,000 steps before my counter died. The jeans will fit in another twenty-five or so pounds. I tried them on the other week and was able to get them up. No where buttoning, and they have NO STRETCH! But, before the end of the year, I'll be posting a pic. Graduation, I wore that fabulous dress and it fit beautifully. I was happy and proud of ALL my accomplishments. Still haven't dated, yet. Working on it, writhing the next few weeks, I'll make myself go on at least one. Lol. And finally, I'm NOT the fat one in the family. My mother, who doesn't know, and won't, called me her "skinny" daughter. It felt wonderful. I'm still a work in progress, and it is something I'll probably be doing the rest of my life. It's a journey, all right. I am going to enjoy every precious day of it!!!!!

    Disappointed with weight loss progress

I just had my six month check up. My surgeon is pleased with my weight loss. I'm finally in the gym and taking Zumba classes. My weight loss has been really slow the last three months, only eight pounds. It's frustrating to see the scale moving so slowly. Meanwhile, shopping for size 12 is fabulous. The NSV are so many, I'm trying to keep them in the forefront, like jogging up the 4 flights of stairs to the Zumba class, when a few months ago I was stopping each floor and panting when I finally did reach the class.

It was among my list of co-morbidities for surgery. No more poise needed!

    Getting Back to Basics

YES! I'm in the same boat. I'm four months out today and have gotten complacent and cocky with myself. I've lost 50 pounds since I started this journey. After talking to my BFF, I realized that I'm falling back into old habits and I can't and won't do that to myself. This morning I re-dedicated myself to getting back on plan. High Protein, lots of Water, veggies and low carb. It's been horrible today, I feel tired and worn out. I know this is temporary. I did this to myself. It's up to me with the help of friends to get back on track.

    African American Hair (and loss)

Hi, I'm four months out today. I have enough hair on my head for two people but worried about hair loss. I've been natural for almost three years. I take biotin and try to get in protein and water (no so good on either the past few days). So far, my hair loss has been minimal. My sister has been using the LOC method for her hair, Liquid (water), Oil and Conditioner (leave in thick pudding type). I started doing this and my hair feels fabulous. At night I spritz it lightly, add some African Prise oil or coconut oil then a glob of African Pride leave -in conditioner. Then I twist my hair up in a bunch of two-strand twist, or do two flat twist pigtails. Cover with my sleep cap and good to go. In the morning, I untwist , add some coconut oil and I'm off. Hope this helps. It's keeping the moisture in to promote healthy strands.

????A shout to the February sleevers ????

Thursday will make 11weeks. I'm down 26 pounds and a whole bunch of inches. I feel really great as I shop in my closets/attic for clothes that have not seen my body in at least 4 years and some 10+. Definitely an advantage of being 50 years old, I don't have to worry about what's "in" style, I can make it work with accessories. I'm graduating Sunday from college with my BA in psychology and my traditional cohorts love my clothes and shoes. I have to laugh that most of the stuff I'm wearing is older than them. Something to be said for classics!

    Stall Panic

Oh thank God for this site and the wonderful people on it. I am 7 weeks out and since March 31st have fluctuated up and down the same amount. My surgeon told me to stay off the scale at my last visit. I have my two month appt in the morning. I DEFINITELY have lost quite a bit of inches, finally did my measurements! I took a picture yesterday in the same bathing suit I used for pics from the night before surgery. There is a huge difference that even I can see with 17 (post surgery) pounds gone forever. It's terrible that I base my success on the scale. It took 30+ years to get to this point, I know I need to be patient and give myself the time to reverse. I'm trying...a work in progress !
