4 small children sounds like a pretty darn good reason to have the surgery if you ask me. The risk of the surgery are very minor compared to an early death and not being around to see those kids grow up. Don't let anyone say your are being selfish, this is an expression of love and desire to be there when they need you in the future. So go for it, and let everyone know about your progress. gk

I'm a diabetic on insulin. I have sleep apnea, hypertension, and high cholestrol. Why add to the risk of surgery with something that is more invasive, and might cause absorption problems. Gastric bypass is like overkill for the same problem, so I chose the band. gk

Check out the news stories on Ron Lester. He is an actor. you might know him from 'Varsity Blues' or the series 'Popular' a few years ago. He played the fat(politically incorrect) kid. He was 500+ lbs when doing those parts. He underwent a vertical sleeve operation(a form of gastric bypass) and lost 305 lbs. He looks good now, but says that he has a problem getting parts. When he was 508lbs there weren't very many people trying out for those parts, but now there are bunches of other guys trying to get the same parts. Invisible, not quite, but it definitely takes some getting used to. gk

I have been using the protein powder shakes as a supplement to my diet, I'm not banded yet. Waiting on approval of insurance after doing all the jumping through hoops. Yes, too much protein can damage your kidneys, so be sure to have yourself monitored while you use it. Getting enough protein is important during the time immediately before and after surgery. Protein is what your body uses to build more of you, ie - healing. If you are on a balanced diet and getting adequate protein and other nutrients you probably don't need to take additional protein except as I noted in the immediate pre and post-operative periods. Ask your lapband surgeon, nutritionist, and primary care Dr for recommendations. gk

Hi I'm Glen, 50 yo, offspring [cant call them kids anymore] boy 30, girl 27, girl twins 25. DW was just banded yesterday(4/9). I'm waiting for approval to have mine done. I am a customer service analyst (repair call handler) for video, internet and phone over Fiber optic. DW is a supervisor over catalog control at a major retailer. gk

DW and I have been using EAS whey Protein. Comes in Vanilla or chocolate, 23 grams of protein per serving. Mixes well with skim milk. I've found that using the vanilla flavor we can add sugar free cofee syrup(like they use at Starbucks) and make almost any flavor we like. DW likes FRESH START liquid Protein energy shots better. 42 grams of protein in a 2.8 oz serving. 134 calories, no sugar. It's kinda of expensive, but it goes down quick & easy(has a texture like softset Jell-o). I think the only flavor is wild berry right now, but others are coming. Let me tell a story that happened to us years ago. Our twin daughters were about 2 1/2, just beginning to feel independent. We went to the Galleria Mall in Dallas with a friend and 17yo niece to help the niece pick a prom dress. Being twins we had dressed them alike that day. Keeping track of them was a challenge on the best of days so my DW and I each took responsibility for 1 twin, the 2 older kids wanted to stick close to our friends. We were in one shop for about 5 minutes when we called the twins and only 1 responded. Long story short...we got security and when they asked us to describe her, we said, just like this one, pointing to the remaining twin. After the longest 30 minutes of our lives a security guard reported that he had found her. Down on the 2nd floor (we were on the 3rd floor near one end) and on the far side of the ice rink that is middle of the mall. She just wanted to watch the skaters a bit closer. We got leashes and vests for the girls the next day. We used them from then untill the girls refused to wear them (about age 7) and by that time they had learned to stay close by. Some people thought the leashes were barbaric, but we didn't listen after that experience. The clerks in the stores always knew that our kids would not be running loose and many expressed their appreciation for that. gk P.s. the twins are now 25 and will shoot me as soon as they find out I've posted this story on line.
