I had RNY on March 18 and have PCOS. I was scared of it not working as well. So far I am down 35 lbs from my highest weight at the start of my preop diet. I feel it is slower than others, but am still making progress, which is hopeful. However, I have gained and lost these same 40 lbs for years and won’t believe anything is different until I’m below 200.

I just had my 2nd follow up this week, does anyone else find it so frustrating that the nutritionists and doctors lump you into the group of people that eat super unhealthy and eat way to much when honestly, I probably know more about food composition than the nutritionist. I feel I don’t belong because I dieted, hard, for YEARS, without results. But everyone assumes you eat way too much because of the excess weight. I am an exercise junky, worked out all the time, ate little, avoided carbs, and still didn’t lose. I know surgery was the ONLY thing that might help. I pray it continues to work for all of us!

I know I'm probably in the minority on this one: I would actually PREFER if no one said anything about my weight loss.
I felt like that before the surgery and still feel like that now. The fact that my body is up for public commentary is GROSS to me.
I didn't look my best before the surgery, and I love fitting into new clothes and having more energy now. But I certainly didn't feel like I looked awful before. I also feel like hating what I looked like before is a trap that makes me less compassionate to myself and others who are overweight.
That being said, different strokes for different folks, right? Thats just me.

Since women face a lot of societal pressure not to get angry, I wanted to add, when people treat you badly, it's totally OK to get angry. If you want to stop being angry, then yes, therapy, realizing you can only control how you react, etc... but being angry and female is not, in itself, bad.

I love ethnic foods, so I'm downing Ethiopian vegetables such as lentils, beets (chewed fully), collard greens, yellow split peas, etc. One restaurant serving lasts me for 3 - 4 meals. Will probably move to West African foods next week.

I am attending the seminar with Dr Malipur in Huntsville in a month. I understand that I have to make appointments with several different kinds of doctors. I also understand that some may not give approval for the surgery. Can anyone give advice on which doctors they did use for this process. My family doctor won't approve it as I spoke with him last year about it. Thanks you all!

It is so nice to know there are several people getting sleeved in Birmingham. I am using Dr. Dewitt and I hope I will be sleeved sometime in November or December 2015. I have already done my sleep study, I have to have 7 months of supervised dr visits which I am on #3 this month so all I have left is EKG and pysch visit left to complete. Who are ya'll using for pysch ?

I use to live in Alabama will forever be a Tide Fan. Dr. Dewitt did bypass on 4 of my family members. I saw a picture of him last week and was in shock. He sure has changed over the years. He is very caring. You are in safe hands. He did not do my surgery because we moved to Florida 14 years ago.

    Hey all,
I'm starting to test out some soft Proteins now that I'm a week out of RNY and successfully getting in my liquid and Protein requirements. I'm confident that as a veggie I could get 60g of protein in with three meals, but I'm getting a wee worried about getting that done in three bebe meals like the ones I'll now be eating.
Has anyone come across sample menus like the hordes that are available for meat eaters? If not, I'll continue to just kinda wing it, but it's always nice to get some outside ideas!
    Thanks!

I smoke daily and consume edibles every other week. Never had any issues besides increased head hunger. (I normally solve that by just snacking on a low cal Protein Bar after smoking). I have noticed that edibles hit me a lot harder now, too. A little too euphoric for my taste. My surgeon only asked me not to smoke for a couple of weeks after surgery because smoking can increase the chances of blood clots. Plus you don't really want to end up having a coughing fit after having stomach surgery. Not fun at all.

If you are self pat, you really should have some kind of contract that spells out the costs and obligations on both sides - the insurance companies do that in their network contracts and it is reasonable to do so as a self pay patient. We self paid for my wife's DS and that was under an all inclusive contract that the surgeon had worked out with the hospital - all hospital and surgical fees including anesthesia and incidentals (no lingering bills for $10 Q-Tips, etc. and it seems that everyone down to, seemingly, the floor sweepers are independent contractors wanting to send you a separate bill.) Our contract also included a cost cap in the event of complications, covering additional surgeries and hospital days, if needed. As a self pay, you have the choice of dealing with any surgeon and hospital in the world; the surgeons are often more sensitive to this than hospital administrators, though I would expect in a city like Huntsville they would be more sensitive to competition than an a rural county with only one hospital.
Talk to your surgeon about this. They are often on staff at multiple hospitals, and some hospitals are more accommodating than others.
Good luck, and hope all works out...

For the few that had complications, there are countless others who did not. People tend to post the complications more in order to get support and ideas but if a person did or is doing great they don't necessarily create a post about it. Don't let the few bad experiences keep you from doing this. It's not just about the weight loss. It is also about the comorbidities and just living longer. You also have to be realistic about your ability to lose weight and keep it off. If you can then great! But most of us have tried losing weight in all kinds of different diets only to gain it all back. From what I've read here and from people I know, even those who have had complications, after a year or 2 out or more they say they would do it again knowing how it all went down for them.

I have two of the most well adjusted, capable, and amazing children who you could ever hope to meet.

My eldest child is a gifted violinist, in the top .5% of students in her grade level in the country, has already been offered a scholarship to Duke University's gifted student TIP program, is a leader in her class, is already taking college math prep classes, and is going to be auditioning for the Cincinnat School for Creative and Performing Arts next year for music and creative writing (she has already been published in a tween/teen magazine). In addition she is popular amongst her peers, kind and compassionate, and funny as hell.

My youngest is only three years old. She knows all of her colors and numbers in Spanish as well as numerous simple everyday sentences. She is already learning to read and knows all of the phonetic sounds of the alphabet. She is also kind and compassionate, loves nature, plays well with other children, and is showing a strong interest and talent in the piano.

I was a single mother for much of my 12 year old's life. While I do not think that smoking pot had anything to do with how my children are, I think that it does have something to do with how I parent them. I am a laid back, open minded, non-judgmental person. I have always and will always nurture their creativity and own personal uniqueness. The fact that I do not judge people on their own chosen lifestyles and I do not make assumption on people that I do not personally know MAY have something to do with my chosen method of relaxation, but most likely the two just go hand and hand.

So, as far as your hope that my children are not with me unsupervised while asleep in their beds as I am outside in my garden smoking pot.....well, I cannot help the ignorant and self-rightous.

    Peace & Love to you.

I absolutley adore how this sight comes off as NON judgemental then people ask a question and you jump down their throats. I've seen it so many f***ing times it irritates me to a point of no return.
On topic... my surgery was 2/12 I smoked last week. I only needed on hit and I was good to go due to stomach and body asorbs differently now. My doctor said if it hurts DON'T do it. Its common sense really.
Don't judge people every one has their happy zone.. I mean remember what it was like when everyone on this sight medicated themselves with food....
Gosh.... hope this helped ya hun =)

Im hoping you feel better soon asifitsthelast. I suffer from hedritis superativa which is similar to what it sounds like you are experiencing only my body doesn't need an operation to evoke this condition.
Essentially my lymph nodes can't get rid of the "garbage" fast enough and they become infected and have to drain. The pressure building up behind the skin becomes excruciating at times until it finally pulls the skin so much it drains pus and blood. I know....gross.
The great thing is that once it drains you are on the road to recovery! It will def take a while for your wound to close and more than likely your skin may be a little tough there moving forward but again you're probably over the toughest part. Keep us posted hon!
