    Diabetics

I was only on Metformin pre-op - 2000mg per day - but I was sent home from the hospital without it. I had my first A1C this week and it was 6.0. Hasn't quite been 3 months so still some old sugars and will go down more. My endocrinologist marked my records as "Type 2 Diabetes RESOLVED". Trust it will go away and go away fast!
  2. I had it yesterday for lunch. So good and a good serving of protein and fiber!

    First post-op labs

I'm not sure. This was my endocrinologist and he will do my diabetes and thyroid follow up in 3 months but not sure about bariatric surgeon. I see her Tuesday and I'll find out. I think I see here again at 6 months so I assume she will do labs then also. I believe it is supposed to be labs at 3 months, 6 months and 12 months then annually after that.

    First post-op labs

I was just looking at my lab results again so I could send them to my bariatric surgeon (they were done by another dr) and I noticed that my endocrinologist had moved my diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes to RESOLVED! I thought he said something the other day about not being considered diabetic anymore but to see in writing in my medical records that this has actually been removed is just overwhelming. THIS is why I sought out WLS. And I knew that RNY can have a huge effect on diabetes but wow, in less than 3 months, I am now not considered a diabetic?! I think I will hug my surgeon when I see her Tuesday. She effectively cured me from a deadly disease - in less than 3 months! What motivation to keep up the hard work! I am sitting here with tears rolling down my face. I just don't think that I truly understood the impact until now...

    WLS for the "right" reasons

Good questions! And good for you for battling it instead of just going into this blindly! Yes - they are all good reasons. I had the exact same questions and even in the first couple of weeks post-op, I kept wondering if I had done it for the "right" reasons. I felt guilty for what I still considered an "elective" surgery. It took a while to get that out of my head post-op. I felt a lot of "why couldn't I just have done this without surgery", etc. The truth is, if I had done this when I was 30, then I wouldn't have some of the co-morbidities I have now (Type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, joint pain, etc etc). I was just looking again at my first post-op labs done this week and noticed my dr moved my diagnosis of Type 2 Diabetes to "RESOLVED". I cannot tell you what an amazing feeling that is! Imagine that had I done this at 30 when I was told I was "pre-diabetic", I would never have had to have the diagnosis of Diabetes and the damage it has done to my body this last 17 years. It is a big decision and only you can make that decision, but not quite 3 months out now, I can't imagine my life without having done this. Keep wrestling with this though. The more you wrestle, the more positive you come out on the other side when you KNOW you made the right decision. Good luck! Keep us posted!

    Coffee?

Could you try decaf? I know it's not the same, but it is the flavor you are craving, it might help. I actually used an individual serving of decaf coffee in my Protein shake early on. It tasted SO good! I am not a big coffee drinker myself and pre-op it often made me a little sick to my stomach sometimes, so no cravings really. Just wanted something different. There is also a coffee Protein powder called Chike (I think?). I haven't tried it but Shelly raves about it on theworldaccordingtoeggface.com. Might be worth trying if you can find a sample. I know that doesn't help you with your craving today....
  7. My NSV for the day - 3 mile walk this morning and NO low back or hip pain! Wow! That is huge. I don't love walking that much and won't do 3 miles walks very often (not great at the exercise part yet), but it was so encouraging to know that I was physically capable of doing it without having to stop and sit down and "release" my back pain, before I could continue. This time last year, I went for a walk on the beach on vacation and had to stop and rest because my back was giving out. Can't wait for my next walk on the beach!
  8. Is there any chance it is pill size? That would seem odd 1 year out, but I was just thinking if you maybe tried crushing the pill or trying it in the liquid form as we too right after surgery if it works. That would be very frustrating. I have to take pain med for chronic kidney stones, so I would be in BIG trouble if I couldn't take NORCO (or whatever other hydrocodone combo pill). Or maybe they can give you a pain patch next time? (I have never had that, so I don't know if they make one small enough dose for dental pain but might be worth asking.) That would just process in your bloodstream not stomach. Sorry I know that doesn't really answer your question of why it is happening. Just trying to figure out how to get around it. Hope they can find a solution!
  9. Congrats! Thanks for sharing that! It will be an encouragement to those who are bummed at getting a denial and show that an appeal sometimes works!

    How soon is too soon?

Don't do it. Way too soon. Some say at least 6 months, some drs say 1 year. See if you can find a substitute like Isopure Coconut Protein drink. If you don't smell it, it doesn't taste too bad. Whatever you do, don't put it in an open cup where you can smell it though! GROSS!
  11. @@Indy _Mike - Honestly I think you are further ahead of the game than many that enter into this surgery blind and frankly in denial of their escape to food. I will tell you that I wasn't willing to admit I was a food addict in the beginning at all. I had thyroid problems, I just needed a little help to lose and then I would be fine, blah blah blah. Thank goodness for my therapist! (Sorry I know I said that before.) But seriously, I had no intention of really seeing the therapist as much as I have especially once she wanted me to admit I was a food addict. How dare she! But man am I glad I didn't give up. She tells me all the time exactly what you are saying - food has been my best friend for over 40 years. Since you already recognize these issues, you are headed in the right direction. Find a good therapist that works with Bariatric patients. They will help you work through some of these issues. When I started, "hey even if I don't go through the surgery, surely this can't hurt". I tried to quit several times but didn't and so glad I didn't!
  12. Start therapy now. Do not wait until post-op. You will be too far behind at that point. And no smoking. I also had a nicotine test pre-op.
  13. Daisee68

    Always so nauseous

I have the same issue. See if the Dr will prescribe either Zofran or Phenegran cream.
  14. I thought the slow rating thing would be hard but let me tell you, you learn very quick after you get food stuck or get sick a few times. And the further out you get the easier that gets but you need time for the food to hit your new stomach and tell you when you start feeling full. I have to use the timer in my phone still, but I'm hoping it eventually will become more habit. I do still eat in the car on the run. I just still make sure to watch the clock and space out my bites. Don't let this part scare you off. Trust me it is the least of the issues.

    I have a question....

Slow and small is key for long success I would think. Even before surgery that is something that we have all been taught. It takes 20 minutes for your body to register that it received food - even before your new tiny stomach. I will say that at 11 weeks, I can eat slightly larger bites now but likely more because I am not as afraid. But if I eat too fast, I get sick - every. single. time. It does get easier. Set a timer on your phone. Eventually we won't have to do that as it will be a new habit, but as my therapist said to me today - you are trying to change many many years of conditioning and it cannot be done overnight.

    Anyone Using HCG?

That is a very bad idea. You have to get out of the old "quick fix diet" mentality and start getting your head around this life change. The best thing you can do is concentrate on making new habits - small bites, eating slowly, cutting down on caffeine, cutting out carbonation, etc. Not all at once. Try one for 2 weeks and then add another new habit the next 2 weeks and then another and another. Are you required to lose a certain amount of weight pre-op? Have you met with nutritionist or therapist yet? Those are the things you need to focus on. Therapy is number one in my opinion. Had another appt today myself and I leave there every time realizing that without her, I would absolutely not be getting through this.

Why am I so hungry still

The hunger feeling could be acid reflux. Did the dr give you meds for reflux? Zantac seemed to help with that discomfort for me.

    chips for salsa?

I tried melted parmesan crisps tonight (after reading this yesterday it is all I could think about). They were really good! I just melted 1/4 cup of freshly shredded parmesan into 2 piles and broiled. Maybe a little too high in fat to have too much but it gave me 9 g of Protein with my meal and tasted so yummy! I think I would try that with Soup the next time I have soup also instead of crackers. And they were really filling too.

    First post-op labs

And PS now I just really gotta get that "one too many bites" thing under control. Struggling with that but bad days are getting farther apart. Therapist asked me today if I still regretted thevsurgery and I could say no without any doubt. 11 weeks out now. Couldn't have said the 6 weeks ago.

Thanks everyone! @@butterfly23 that is amazing A1C !! Congrats!

    And another question

I had the pickle pops in week 2 without issue. Helped with hydration and the cottonmouth I had.
  22. Daisee68

    Help!

Sipping every 30 seconds may be too much. Use a medicine cup (or other one ounce cup) and set a timer for 5 minutes and sip 1/3rd of the cup every 5 minutes. That only gets you 4 ounces in an hour but within a couple of days you will be able to drink more so up it to 1/2 the cup every 5 minutes or drink it every 4 minutes, etc. Do this for a while and you will catch up. It is the only way I was able to get in enough fluids in the beginning. That will ease up pretty soon - by day 8 or so I could drink 8 oz per hour and then by 2 or 3 weeks I could do 12 oz per hour.

    Pretty fantastic NSV's

Wow! What an awesome day! Love those NSV's!!

    Eating before its time ..

. Yea they were just worried about calories. Never gave a real reason . Ima look soon The Premier Protein ready made shakes are 160 calories with 30g of protein and only 1g of carb (I think - it might be 4g) and is 11 oz. They are very good - or at the very least tolerable. So, does your NUT work at your dr's office? If not, I think I would call the surgeon's office and ask for the nurse. When do you go back for your first follow up?
  25. Daisee68

    Eating before its time ..

OK I remember u r about a week out. I am not a medical professional and honestly I would not normally say go against your NUT but before you tried food this early, I would at least try protein shake instead - unless there is so me medical reason that your Dr doesn't allow it. The protein shake would certainly be a much safer choice than food. And it will help with the hunger. Just take it slow. Make it a good choice (high protein / low sugar).
