    Pain is the real deal

Ask for Vicodin/Hydrocodone. It does not have codeine in it. Only problem is you have to go get the script. They cannot call it in, so you will have to wait until tomorrow. In the meantime, take half a dose of what you have. Sometimes that helps. The med could just be too strong for you. And definitely take it with nausea med. (If they didn't give you one, tell them you need generic Zofran ODT - which means it is sublingual and gets working fast instead of having to go through your stomach.) And what Dub said, walk, arms above head, use Gas-x and heating pad. Try yoga child's pose (basically on your stomach on your knees with arms stretched out in front of you - google it if that doesn't make sense. ) Now having said all that, what you are going through emotionally is VERY normal. Most of us have the same reaction. I remember getting home from the hospital and just thinking "what the heck have I done?!" But as @@Ashlegal said, truer words have never been spoken than "it gets better everyday". You just have to get through this first week or so as best as you can without dehydrating, so sip sip sip!

Resistance work with a bad shoulder?

Have you been to PT for your shoulder? If not, I would consider doing that because they can help you with the correct motions. Having had 4 shoulder surgeries myself, I know that certain movements can do damage. Impingement can lead to tears if you are not careful (and sometimes even if you are). You should be able to do bicep curls and tricep extensions without too much issue. You likely can do chest press too, but just be sure your hands are positioned far enough apart to work your chest only and not stress your shoulder. Also rows would be good to strengthen your back and shouldn't stress the shoulder. I would be careful with the planks and pushups. I did those as rehab to surgery but it really hurt prior to. Other than that, try and focus on your lower half - lunges, squats, etc. BUT walking is one of the best things you can do for the weight loss and for your heart. Good luck!! Don't make that shoulder worse and don't stress about the exercise. Do what you can and it will work!
  3. Nearly all (if not all) gain weight right after the surgery due to fluids from the hospital and swelling. That part is totally normal. The rest sounds like the gas they used during surgery trying to escape. It is good that you went to the ER just in case, but especially since you said it is easing up now, it very much sounds like that is what it is. It is an odd pain that the pain meds cannot touch. You have to walk, walk, walk. At day 5 it should start to ease up a lot. Try using a heating pad on your back/shoulder. That will ease the pain sometimes. And try Gas-X if you haven't. It does not work on the kind of gas they used to expand your stomach during surgery but it does work on the intestinal gas. If it doesn't ease up more by tomorrow or you need peace of mind, call your surgeon. There is always someone on call. I am not a medical professional, but I can only speak from my experience. Hang in there!

    No energy

Low Vitamin D can cause low energy but certainly lack of food would as well. Why us she not eating all day until dinner? That is just a vicious cycle Thatcher have all lived thru and screws with metabolism not to mention health. Did she tell the Dr how much protein she is (or in this case is not) getting? With that much loss that quick and little to no protein and no exercise, she is losing muscle mass and can eventually lead to her being much more weak and I'll than she realizes. Is she going to therapy? If not I strongly recommend seeing an eating disorder specialist.

My file is in "Review" with Cigna!

    @@Blueeyes66 - that's ridiculous! Find a new surgeon.

    Cow cheese!

Yay! It's so great when you find something you can eat comfortably at that stage!

    Approval

    Congrats!
  9. You surgeon may have one - especially if you are using Center of Excellence. Having said that, I use an AWESOME group of nutritionists who only work with WLS patients. They don't take insurance but they do everything over the phone and charge a very reasonable price for the 30 minute consult. I changed surgeon centers because I felt the NUT was not right for me. I'd be happy to share their info with you if you like. Just send me a private message if you want their contact info.

    Cow cheese!

Laughing Cow cheese? I hate it pretty early. I do think I tried it during pureed in very tiny bites.

    Regret surgery

Sort of unrelated but having 3 little ones especially one so young, have you talked to your OB about postpartum depression? It is a very real thing and nothing to be ashamed of. Aside frombthe WLS, I would highly recommend visiting with your Dr about that. Also know that your feelings and doubts are completely normal. Heck I had those same thought even a month after surgery and I don't have 3 little kids! Even with the small complication I had, I do not regret it. A couple if months ago it was a different story but at 4 1/2 months out , I am so glad I did this. It is a big undertaking so you need to get the depression delay with (assuming it is a treatable clinical depression). And please go see a therapist and work thru some of this stuff. Again Iowa's saying the same to my therapist the week before and even the month after and without her help, I am not sure I could have gotten this far in adjusting. THAT is the best money I have spent.
  13. I don't have a solution. I have done the same. I think it gives us something to do other than eat - especially if you have a trip planned. The only suggestion I have as far as stopping is maybe what my therapist tells me about food - make a list of things now of all the other items you need to do to get ready for your trip or get your house ready or just random chores you have been meaning to do, then when you have the urge to eat when you are not hungry (or shop), get out that list and work on one of those items until you can cross it off the list. Once you have crossed it off, you will feel accomplished and hopefully the urges will have passed. Hope that helps!
  14. @@Dub - so glad everything went well. Get some rest! TIP.: Ask for earplugs if the noises get too much. That darn beeping machine made me crazy!!
  15. I am 4 months post-op and finally got serious about exercise today by meeting with a trainer and setting up some appointments. It was a tough workout of things like kettleballs and using body as resistence, etc. and even put me on a 15 incline (max on the treadmill) and asked me to do that for 10 minutes. Um, no. Have you seen me? Clearly she missed the part where I was a beginner and she definitley didn't understand anything about the bypass. Did my weight, body fat, etc. and said I should be eating 2500 calories a day and again, nope. I am not going to follow that bit of advice obviously, BUT I do know I am going to have to get more than the 700 calories and 30 g carbs per day (thats total carb not net). Where I get very confused (and I feel like I have kind of posted similar to this in the past) is what does "good carb" really mean and how do we accomplish that without pushing calories too high? Oh and the only time I could meet with her was 7 a.m. She said I have to eat or at least have a shake first, but I have to take Synthroid in the mornings and wait an hour for food (which a shake counts as). She suggested half an apple and some Peanut Butter to be followed by a shake after the workout but that means I am going to have to get up at 5:30 to take the med, wait an hour and then have time to eat half an apple which is not something I can just scarf down quickly (not that I can scarf anything down quickly really). PS I really HATE getting up that early... I know I am overthinking this a little. I have a call in to my NUT to get her to sort it out for me, but I wanted to check in here and get your ideas. I still feel like I cannot eat much volume at once, so the thought of eating say brown rice and it swelling in my stomach does not sound fun at all. How do we get sufficient Protein AND sufficient good carbs at this stage? Or more importantly, enough of those so I don't get dizzy and faint when I am working out. (No worries, I didn't faint today but I did get pretty dizzy a few times.) .
  16. I agree with @@Babbs! I am anxiously awaiting this for you! Cannot wait to walk through this with you!
  17. @@Dub - don't be afraid to use a little Fairlife milk in your shakes if needed. I will use 2 oz of Fairlife and 4 to 6 oz of Water and it makes it a little richer with very little caloric / fat / sugar effect. (At least that is what I have done. ) I found something called "Spelt" flour which is supposedly a good substitute with higher Protein and better taste than wheat flour. Not sure how it will work in this recipe - or even in the nutrition stats but will check back in and let everyone know. @@beachgal2935 - REALLY appreciate your recipe! And I hope it didn't appear as though I was tearing it apart. It was really a genuine question about whether I could have flour at this stage (4 months post-op). Appreciate the reply about substitutes! Can't wait to make it!
  18. It takes a while to get up to that for most people. Once you can move on to real foods it gets easier. chicken, fish, cheese, yogurt, etc.
  19. So exciting! This will be the first thing I have done! Can't wait to hear how it goes for you
  20. I am going to make this today. Is the white all-purpose flour really Ok for us? Any substitutes?

    YUCK!

@@flokismom - Just be sure to use the sugar free syrups. There is sugar alcohol in them which bothers some people, but a little goes a LONG way.
  22. @@Elode - Yes that is the drink I was talking about! I actually first had it at this cool little coffee shop in the town near me and the Starbucks one was NOWHERE near as good as that one! FYI, not sure where you live but World Market (we have stores here but I think you can get them online too) have TONS of the sugar free Torani flavors.
  23. @@Elode - I was in search of my favorite winter coffee that is salted caramel. Never found an exact replacement but when I saw this flavor, I had to have it. It is VERY good. The only one I have used the whole bottle and need to get more. Mixed with the vanilla Premier Protein it tastes a bit like really good melted vanilla ice cream. Yummy!
  24. Premier Protein. chocolate and vanilla. I add Torani sugar free Salted Caramel Syrup to the Vanilla. yummy! For powders, I use Precision Engineered in Chocolate and Vanilla. In addition to shakes, I will add the chocolate Protein Powder to sugar free Jello Chocolate pudding snack and I will add 1/2 scoop of the vanilla powder to 1/2 container of greek yogurt. For unflavored (which I am able to add to a few foods), I use Doc Hale’s Unflavored Protein Powder. This last one came in handy immediately post-op because you can mix it in as little 3 ounces of liquid (I would use Propel Fitness berry water) and could get in 20g protein in only 3 or 4 ounces which really helps the first week when you can drink so little.
