Hi - I'm Helen - March 2007 - South Africa - 147kg (324lbs) -  I had Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery. On the one year anniversary of my surgery I had halved my body weight and 8 years later I am still 73Kg (160lbs).

The decision has been the best one I EVER made and has been truly life changing.  Don't for ONE minute think it has been plain sailing - it has not!  I have had to work HARD to maintain this weight!

WLS surgery is a TOOL - the window of opportunity is one year - 18 months in that time you need to get your head around changing your eating patterns and how you live.

I have recently given up a corporate job to try and start working full time with obese clients - I have become a personal trainer (I know everytime I hear myself say that I look around to see if there is someone else in the room) because without exercise we are all just doomed to fail. If we had loved exercise in the first place we would not have gained weight would we???

South Africa is far behind when it comes to supporting obese people and yet we have one of the fastest growing obese populations in the world.  I am blessed to have a group of supportive firends and professionals that I can turn to hen I am struggling and I urge all fellow BariatricPals to do the same ;)
