I think it's pretty much up to your surgeon. I was using a straw right after I got out of surgery. I had my endoscopy done before surgery, and a hiatal hernia repair during surgery, so taking small sips was not a problem for me. Using a straw was not an issue either.

Hello July Sleevers!! Congratulations to everyone! We made it!! I'm six weeks & five days out - and am down 51 lbs. I too am struggling to get my Water every day. Some days are better than others, it depends on how much I'm doing. The other day I went to the Iowa State Fair, and within four hours I had met my goal. Other times (like now) when I'm sitting at my desk working - I barely drink any. I'm finding it hard to get water in especially trying to follow the '10 minute before - 60 minute' after meals rule. I guess I'll just have to find what works best for me. I love Diet Snapple Raspberry Tea, but try not to drink too much of it because of the aspartame. I hope they jump on the band wagon like a lot of these other companies and find a more healthy alternative! I've graduated from the soft food diet to whatever I want. So I'm gradually trying new foods. I'm staying with healthy foods. I work on Proteins first, and by the time I get to carbs, I'm pretty much done with my meal!

Question for everyone
mclorrie replied to byebyefat's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was told I could drive a couple of days after I quit taking my pain meds. For me it was around five days. I only took my meds for two days after I got out of the hospital. -

Start dieting before surgery?
mclorrie replied to Missbliss14's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You're on a good start by cutting out alcohol and soda, and are practicing chewing your food. You're slowing down while you eat which I think helps you to get fuller faster! Don't get discouraged, if you have questions about dieting - ask your dietician! That's what they are getting paid for! I had to do a six month Doctor supervised diet before my insurance would approve me. I learned a lot from asking questions, here and at my appointments! Good luck!! -

VGS Scheduled 9/2 - SUPER SCARED!
mclorrie replied to Jennifer Cunningham's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know it's easier said than done, but try not to be nervous about your surgery. I was afraid too, so I prayed about it, and it really helped! I was calm, cool, and collected during pre-op and my family were the ones that was nervous! I honestly feel that this helped me to recover so much faster! Don't worry about nausea. If your nurses are anything like mine, they will help you to keep your nausea under control with medication. Good luck with your surgery, and keep us posted on how you're doing! -
I had trapped gas in my right shoulder (right in the shoulder blade). After getting a massage, the pain was gone!

Sleeve tomorrow. Any words of confidence from those who have done it.
mclorrie replied to my_new_lifetime's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Congrats!! Welcome to the loser's bench!! I'm probably a little late, but my best advice is - to try not and be nervous! Believe it or not, I wasn't the slightest bit nervous when I went into surgery! I didn't have any complications, what-so-ever, and it didn't take long for me to recover! I was off of pain meds in two days after being released from the hospital. Good luck to you, and wish you all well on your recovery!! -
United Healthcare approval?

I have United Healthcare too. My PCP referred me to my surgeon, that way I knew that she was in-network. -
To straw or not to straw
mclorrie replied to ladyfrann's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon allowed me to have small sips of Water right after surgery, and I drank out of a straw. The only thing that bothered me was the swelling from the hiatal hernia repair. Other than burping, it didn't bother me much. I would ask your surgeon about using a straw just to be sure it's allowed. -
Tomorrow is my big day!! Six months of supervised weight loss, and now - I'm on the last day of my pre-op diet!! I amazed myself with how much weight I've lost pre-op - 30 lbs, and am ready for surgery tomorrow! Tonight after work, I'll pack for the hospital, and hopefully get the call to let me know what time my surgery is! I'm praying it will be early!! A big thank you to everyone on this board that has helped me along the way! For those of you just starting out and are doing your research - this board is the best place to be! Everyone is so helpful, and will always offer you good advice! They did for me! Just wanted to give a shout out to everyone who's got a date with their surgeon tomorrow - the best of luck with your surgery!! And I'm wishing you all a speedy recovery!! Move over everyone! Because the July 2 Sleevers are about to join you on the loser's bench!!! Woo-hoo!!!

Tomorrow! July 2 - Who's with me?
mclorrie replied to mclorrie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@@mykdzmom - I've been adding 1 scoop of unjury to 12 oz of skim milk each morning. It takes me about 45 - hour to drink it all down. The reason why I go with 12 oz is because I bought the vanilla Unjury, and it's too strong with 8 oz of milk. 12 oz makes it taste better, and sometimes I add 2 tablespoons of PB2 to make it a Peanut Butter Protein drink. It gives me an extra six grams of protein! -
Tomorrow! July 2 - Who's with me?
mclorrie replied to mclorrie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Three weeks post op - Doing well! Went back to work on July 21! Feels good to be back! I'm a little tired when I go home at night, but am adapting well! Still on the pureed diet until next week. It's really odd adapting to my new food portions! It's crazy how little I eat, and I'm satisfied! Hunger pains are still there, but I think it's mostly head hunger. I should be able to move on to soft foods next week which will be anything you can slice through with a fork. I'm still struggling to get my 60-80 grams of Protein a day mainly because I'm just not hungry at night after supper. So today, I'm trying something a little different. Protein shake in the morning when I get to work, and about a couple hours later I having lite yogurt. I'm usually hungry after late afternoon before I go home from work, so I'm going to try having to have another Protein Drink before I leave work tonight. We'll see how that goes... I'm getting all of my 64 oz. of Water - no problem! I can't believe I'm 42 lbs down already since I started this journey! Time to start getting busy in the gym! Thinking about asking hubby if we can go out on the bike trails this weekend! If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask! -
Day after surgery - chest pain when drinking anything
mclorrie replied to ozgirl14's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My nurses told me it was due to the swelling, I had hiatal hernia repaired too. I think air had a lot to do with it too, because they had me drinking with a straw. Once I ditched the straw it was better. -
how long is the Gastric Sleeve surgery ?

Tomorrow! July 2 - Who's with me?
mclorrie replied to mclorrie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, I'm three days post op, and am doing pretty good! I'm almost getting my 64 oz of Water. It's really hard because of the swelling. Doc had to repair a hiatal hernia, so that has made it a little difficult getting all my water in. Every time I drink, I have to burp. The nurses told me that my body is telling me to slow down. I'm definitely not getting my Protein, but as I'm getting better, I'm going to start pushing it. Today is the first day I felt well enough to give up the pain meds. I'm still taking my anti-nausea medication. Hubs made toast yesterday, and I thought I was going to hurl. I had a little bit to eat, I hope this too shall pass. Just haven't had an appetite. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask! -
Tomorrow! July 2 - Who's with me?
mclorrie replied to mclorrie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Look to your future, and how you're going to look and feel after the weight is gone! I kept my focus on eating right, & knowing that as I do what my doctor said, there will be less complications. -
