  1. When I started my research I was interested in the band because I thought it was a less invasive and easier to manage option. That's not true. It's still a hospital stay and is still required a pretty major surgery. I also wasn't comfortable with the port in my skin and a foreign object in my body long term. I wasn't really sure about the sleeve because it was fairly new and I didn't want parts of my stomach removed from my body. My surgeon doesn't perform the sleeve and doesn't believe there's enough long term data yet to know exactly how successful it is. The gastric bypass has been performed for decade and is the gold standard in weight loss surgery. While it seemed a bit more extreme than the band I was originally interested in, I did a little soul searching and realized that in spite of potential complications and in spite of the potential for malabsorption and not being able to tolerate certain foods, it was the best option for me. Maybe not being able to eat whatever I want is a good thing. Being able to eat what I wanted in any amount is what led to my obesity to begin with. Taking vitamins sucks but it helps me establish routine. I wake up and take the same vitamins at the same time throughout the day and I keep track of how much I eat and drink all day. I wouldn't ever do that if I didn't HAVE to. Do your homework. Write down pros and cons. Really self analyze what your pitfall is when it comes to your weight and diet and exercise and see which surgery and subsequent program seems to be the best fit for you. Sleeve patients love their sleeve, bandits love their band and bypassers love our pouches. You have to kind of determine on your own and with your doctor which one you think will be best. Every body is different.
  2. I'm 28. I had gastric bypass on 4/6 and so far I'm doing great. Im down 18 lbs since surgery (47 lbs overall). I haven't had any bad reactions to any foods I've tried but my eating is pretty limited to a list of acceptable folds my doctor gave me. I am having a difficult time getting my liquids in everyday and some days I am beyond tired and feel like I'm struggling to get things done. My doctor said the fatigue periods should end after 6-8 weeks post op. Right now I'm just doing the best I can and going through the motions of healing and relearning how to eat and drink again. Everything's so different but so far, not at all in a bad way.

    Pre-Pre op diet?

I was on what my doctor calls a "liver shrinking diet" up until 2 weeks before my surgery. Basically it was Protein and veggies only. No fruit, dairy, starches or grains. Two weeks before surgery I was on a 100% liquid diet which continued for a week after surgery and then I was moved to soft foods. My doctor doesn't do this to lower BMI or to make you lose a specific amount of weight. It's to decrease the size of your liver so that it's not in the way during surgery. Obviously since it's so restrictive you'll definitely lose weight, but she doesn't set a specific number.

    Insure nutrition?

I registered with them and they told me I was approved. But I haven't gotten anything since.
  5. I wasn't comfortable with the idea of a foreign object in my body on a long term basis. The sleeve I wasn't sure about because of how new it is and I wasn't really comfortable with the removal of parts vs the "rerouting" of parts. I'm a recent bypass patient myself.
  6. My immediate family, my boyfriend (we live together), my closest friends, my two bosses at work. Initially I thought about keeping it to myself and family only, but I realized my friends should know so that they can support me. Or at least know why my interest in going out with them has declined.

    What ya eating tonight?

1/4c of homemade tuna salad and a mini Babybel light cheese wedge. Didn't finish it though.
  8. @@Sam58 Yes everything is decaf. I even have to skip some crystal light flavors because they're not decaf. The Water drinking problem improves if I drink water AFTER something else. So basically now plain water on an empty stomach is the problem.
  9. I drink tons of fluid but very little of it is plain water. I'm drinking protein, iced tea, crystal light and similar zero cal drinks and diluted vitamin water. I know those things will all keep me hydrated, but I also know nothing's better than clean fresh plain water :-/ thanks for all the tips. Glad to know its not just me.

    April bypass buddies.

Good luck to everyone having surgery this week! First few days are rough but it gets easier and you'll be glad you did it!

    Magnesium citrate

I just chugged mine and followed it up with lots of Water. Any laxative product will dehydrate you.

    When do you tell him?

@@VSGAnn2014 I didn't intend to imply that secrets are dirty. I said for ME it would feel that way. I don't advertise my WLS, and you're right not everything is for everybody to know without cause. For me, it's not a secret, but it's also not just anybody's business. It isn't first date subject matter, but I wouldn't let months and months go by without saying something, especially if things advanced relationship wise. Just my opinion.

    Magnesium citrate

They're making you do 2 bottles?! Ugh. One was plenty for me. I had been on a liquid diet for 12 days when I had my magnesium citrate day. What an uncomfortable day that was.

    When do you tell him?

Personally, I think if it comes up and you're comfortable with it, go ahead and tell him. If things advance and you wait to tell him, then it may seem like a lie or that you wanted to hide it or are ashamed of it. If someone has a problem with the fact that you've had WLS, would probably be best to know sooner rather than later after you've made an investment of time and emotions. For me it's not something I advertise, but hiding it makes it seem like it's a "dirty secret" and it isn't.

    Lets talk gas...

I most burp but I'm less than 2 weeks post op and I don't eat very much right now. I do pass gas after eating and after drinking protein. It's a relief to feel and it's natural. I find gas-x strips to be helpful but if that's not working for you there are other makers of anti-gas products. Just make sure whatever you get is a chewable or strip or liquid because once you've had surgery you're not going to absorb a pill or capsule the same way. You also don't want it to get stuck. And walking around helps because it boosts the circulation. Plus if you walk outside and have to fart it's gonna blow away in the wind LOL so long as nobody's behind you it'll be fine.

    Mom just said..

May I ask if your mom is also overweight? If she is, she's probably jealous of your success at weight loss. If she's not, she's probably still jealous. Anybody who tells you "you look better heavier" or "I liked you better when you were fat," is not used to how you currently look and probably just isn't willing to accept the change even if it's a positive one. Don't let it discourage you, I bet you're happier now than you were before and certainly healthier I imagine.

    Post-op Blues

I know these feelings are temporary, and I know that this is all part of my recovery and I just have to work through it. But I haven't had solid food since March 23rd and it's making me depressed. Anytime somebody eats in front of me I'm having to choke back tears. When my boyfriend eats, I am irrationally upset. Mostly because he promised to walk this journey with me, and the night before my surgery he ate Easter Dinner. I don't even want junk food. I just want some kind of regular solid food. I am counting down the hours to my post-op visit and get the OK from my surgeon to move to soft foods. I just want to feel normal. I don't regret my choice to have my surgery. Because of my choice and in following my pre-op diet and going through with my surgery, I have lost 40 lbs in 3 months. I know in the long run this is going to be the greatest thing I ever choose to do for myself, but right now THIS IS SUCKSVILLE.

    African American RNY Sisters

I think I'm gonna put my hair in twists or braids for a couple of months during the shedding phase. That way instead of coming out and going down my drain, it'll all just come out when I take the twists or braids out. My hairs very thick I think I'll be ok with some shedding, I just don't want it in clumps messing up my plumbing lol

    Finally got to eat....

I don't think my doctor has a "puréed" stage now that I look at my paperwork. This week I was given a small list to eat from which included yogurt, eggs, cottage cheese, lentil and split pea soup. Next week I have a list that includes deli meats and cheeses, canned chicken and tuna, soft fish, well cooked beans/lentils/legumes, soft tofu, egg salad, and feta and ricotta cheeses, which I will eat for two weeks and as long as those foods go down well I move onto more stuff like ground meats and soft cooked veggies and non-fibrous/stringy fruits.
  20. I got advanced to soft foods finally. I had a scrambled egg and two tbsp if refried beans. It was the greatest thing ever. Today I had yogurt and it didn't seem to like me :-/. I'm thinking the next few months is going to be a whole lot of trial and error. Guess I'll start getting ready to open up Chef Blashlee's Test Kitchen!

    Bypass process

I was only in the hospital for 2 days. I didn't get dressed or change clothes until I went home. I had packed sweats and pajamas and ended up not needing them at all. I packed my shower cap and headwrap as well as my face soap and lotion. They provided me a bag with shower gel, body lotion, a toothbrush and toothpaste and mouthwash. I had brought my own but didn't end up needing it. You should bring your own in case your hospital or surgery center isn't as accommodating. If you have to buy these things from the hospital convenience store it'll cost you triple. I went to the hospital in a hoodie and leggings and nikes. I left the hospital in a sweatsuit and flip flops. I took my phone and iPad and their charging cords. Just about everything else I needed was given to me.

    April bypass buddies.

I don't know that my tastebuds are sharper but they're different. Drink I was able to enjoy pre op are absolutely intolerable post op. I had several unopened containers that I had to exchange because I just haven't been able to drink then without being completely put off. Isopure drinks have been going down the best. Hopefully I can start trying the other drinks a few weeks down the line n

    Finally got to eat....

Thanks. So far I've had yogurt, scrambled egg, refried Beans, and string cheese. Everything has gone down well. Yogurt seems to be a "slider" food tho, so i won't be relying on it much for my meals and my doctor doesn't condone Snacks. It's s great Protein source but it didn't fill me up at all. I was drinking Premier Protein mostly. I also had Proteins from Cellucor (Red Velvet was my favorite, I haven't tried it post op) and also Syntrax Fuzzy Navel (haven't been able to tolerate it post op). I drank a lot of Iced Passion Tea from Starbucks and crystal light strawberry lemonade.
  24. Plain water hurts my stomach! It's so frustrating because I know how important it is to get down pure water. Once I've had my Protein I can sip down a few oz of plain water. But at any temperature, especially colder than room temp, it hurts so bad. Not that I don't think people here will help you, but my topic is pretty specific to post op tastes and you keep asking about your pre-op diet. Perhaps you should post a new topic in the pre op forum specific to your surgery so that you can get more answers. When your topic is in the right place, you've got a greater chance of people who can give you advice seeing it and giving good responses. Thanks and good luck.
  25. Lucky you only 5 days. I did liquids only for 14 days pre-op. I did very well. Kept myself busy, got rid of all the food from my fridge so I wouldn't be tempted. At times where I would normally be eating, I ran an errand or worked out. @@James Marusek Isopure diluted with a bit of Water has actually been the best for me to get down. I got a fresh Vitamin shoppe order about a week before surgery of my faves, which are no longer my faves, so I'm going to go exchange them for some isopure bottles today. @@MrsSugarbabe I just ordered some yesterday, my doctor's office gave me samples and I found them to be perfect. If I can get down a serving of that and a bottle of isopure a day, I will get my minimum 60g in, plus whatever else I get from the little amounts of food I will begin eating.
