Hello, I'm new...LOL
blashlee replied to Georgia_girl81's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Congrats on your surgery and glad to hear it went well! I'll be relocating to Georgia in about two years (hopefully to Atlanta) and one of the things on my list is to make sure I find a good bariatric surgeon to see there in case I need to. I'm having my bypass april 6. -
Has he seen a doctor and had his glands and everything checked out? If you've removed snack and junk food and he's an active child but still gaining it could be something medical.

Hello All - My Big Surgery Day is Monday Feb 23rd!
blashlee replied to losttexan's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Good luck and congrats on taking steps toward being healthy. I was thinking of having the band by my surgeon and I discussed it and thought bypass would be best for my lifestyle and goals. Keep us posted on your recovery and progress! -
When a friend isn't supportive.
blashlee replied to ambwolfe's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've found that a lot of people who are against what you're doing are either 1) ignorant to what it is you're actually doing. 2) afraid for you. 3) afraid to "lose" you. I have a few friends I know I'm going to have to keep my distance from because they are big social eaters and for years I've been their fat friend who's down and willing to go to buffets or get ice cream etc. I have to simply tell them I can't be that friend anymore and if they care for me at all they will understand and respect that. It's dangerous if they don't. -
For those of you who don't know your date...

I got my date. April 6! -
Thank you! If your ins co takes a long time just stay on them. A lot of insurance companies will drag their feet or create roadblocks to avoid paying and they hope you'll just give up. Never give up, you're paying for insurance for a reason.

Excited to share that my insurance approved me today and my gastric bypass surgery is scheduled for April 6! Feeling a range of emotions but mostly I'm feeling really motivated. Both my surgeon and my PCP think I'm going to do really well with the surgery and I've been doing really well with the liver shrinking diet. I'm excited about this new chapter of my life and using my new tool to lead a long and healthy life!

How long does it take to know if you are approved?
blashlee replied to roni99123's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Mine was sent yesterday and approved today. My doctor said they usually take up to 14 days. Every insurance company is different. -

My surgeon said possibly late March if all goes well and im successful with liver shrinking diet. -
Thank you Meryl! My insurance doesn't require the 6 month diet but I am on a liver shrinking diet prescribed by my surgeon. If all goes well we are looking at possibly the end of March for surgery. Thank you! If I have questions i definitely will!

Endoscopy? Pre Op diet?
blashlee replied to WickedRebelRose's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm pre-op, I had my first consult last Monday. My surgeon had me start phase 1 of the liver shrinking diet right away and about 2 weeks before surgery (which is not scheduled yet) I will have a liquids only phase of that diet. I am electing bypass, not band, so an endoscopy is not required, however I do have to have an ultrasound of my liver and stomach. -
I'm on the "Liver Shrinking Diet" and am 8 lbs down in 10 days so if you're on something similar, then yeah that sounds about right. A lot of patients lose a good chunk of weight pre-op. My diet is 3 meals with Protein (any amount) and up to 2 cups of veggies (non starch) only. I am to avoid fruit ( ), dairy, nuts/nut milks, grains, starches, sugars, carbonated drinks, coffee, black or green tea, and alcohol. I'm supplementing my diet with Isopure Protein Drinks. No snacking, 64 oz Water minimum a day. It's hard because I work in an office setting and there are always donuts and bagels around but I am determined to do what I'm supposed to do to get to the next step. If my liver is still too large at my next appt I'll have to keep up this diet until it's small enough. I don't want to do anything that will delay me getting my surgery scheduled.

My surgeon told me there isn't anything you can do about hair loss except take your vitamins and be patient. She said it happens about 90 days post-op and takes another 90-120 days for the hair to grow back and regulate. Basically the shock of the weight loss to your system causes the hair follicles to "die." And then when your system starts to regulate itself, it'll reawaken.

Thank you for sharing your story. I'm a new patient (prep-op gastric bypass) and regaining weight is one of my biggest fears because just about every effort I've ever made to lose weight has resulted in regaining all the lost weight back and more. People who are not overweight don't realize that for us it is a daily struggle and something we have to carry for life. Good luck, you sound so determined and I hope you get back on track!
