I lost a cc of fluid in my band. My doctor explained that with a new band, that will sometimes happen - it's not leaking it's just absorbed into the device. Don't know if that is what happened to you, but thought i would pass it along.

Steph, Chocolate Dipped Sawdust! Hilarious. That is exactly it - you are a master with words. Yeah, what the hay is the name of that bar. I too am a snacker, as a "meal" is impossible. And still have less than 900 calories a day, but keep the machine burning with high fiber fruits like you. Seems to be working fine, I'm losing.

    Waking up during surgey

Yeah, tell your Doctors during future surgery that you have a history of AA. Some places are now using a brain wave monitor to insure that this doesn't happen (They are only like 5 grand, so you think everyone would have had them by now). It probably has nothing to do with the kind of surgery you had, as others said. You are so not crazy. It IS rare, but recognized now - and if you have a surgeon that doesn't know about it, I would have to question why. We know, and we aren't even doctors - (But I play one online. heh heh)
  7. I did hear something interesting tho. I heard that after flying, restriction can be increased for a few days (I guess it is from the pressure change). I am flying from VA to LA over New Years - and will be doing a 5 day fast while I am there... I hope it's true, hahahaha. Will let you guys know what happens.

    Excruciating Pain

Yeah, after 4 days, intense pain is a red flag if it is in the same place every time. Otherwise it could be gas, but I would call the "on-Call", and/or go to the emergency room.

    ketosis

THERE ARE PLUSES AND MINUSES TO BE AWARE OF WITH KETOSIS (NOT KETOACIDOSIS) EVERYONE RESPONDS DIFFERENTLY. (Alcoholics and people with Liver or Kidney dysfunction are absolutely contraindicated for a ketogenic diet) There are side effects from a Ketogenic diet - and there are advantages. This has nothing to do with Ketoacidosis. For example: (Disadvantages) Other side effects associated with ketogenic [a diet that puts the person in ketosis] diets include temporary dizziness, headache, lethargy, weakness and, in extremis, diarrhea and nausea. In addition, a person on a diet extremely low in carbohydrates, Fiber, and many Vitamins and minerals is liable to feel cranky, sluggish, and deprived. Ketosis occurs when the amount of carbohydrate fuel- the fuel that is needed to run the body - drops below a critical level, forcing the body to turn first to Protein and then to fat reserves to do the work carbohydrates normally do. When protein is deflected in this manner, it releases nitrogen into the blood stream, placing a burden on the kidneys as they try to excrete excessive urinary Water due to sodium loss. When fat is likewise deflected, the breakup releases fatty acids, or ketones, into the bloodstream, further burdening the kidneys. If ketosis continues for long periods of time, serious damage to the liver and kidneys can occur, which is why most low-carbohydrate, or ketogenic diets recommend only short-term use, typically 14 days. Many nutritionists caution their patients-especially women in the early stages of pregnancy-against following them at all. Some Advantages Fasters experience a sensation of improved well-being and absence of bothersome hunger in the second or third day of a fast. Experts suggest that this feeling is due to a chain of reactions set off by the release of ketones. Ketones inhibit the release of insulin and the stress hormones. As a result, the blood sugar becomes more stable and hunger is calmed. Anxiety is reduced. During ketosis the brain cells are calmed down enough to prevent epileptic seizures. The electrical activity of the brain, as measured on an electroencephalogram (EEG), is found to improve in regularity and intensity. Ketones, being acids, also tend to sterilize the urine against infection. They even dissolve certain types of kidney stones. The low-carbohydrate diets that rely on ketosis for weight loss are termed ketogenetic diets. There is no question that ketogenic diets work. They can result in quick weight loss. Dr. Atkins' diet is and example of a diet based on ketosis produced by a very low carbohydrate intake. Sources: Mega Mega Nutrition by Richard A. Kunin MD Eat Better, Live Better: A Common sense Guide to Nutrition and Good Health by Readers Digest Carbohydrates Include FRUITS AND VEGETABLES! Veggies are carbohydrates. So is fruit. It is important to understand the difference between a complex and simple carbohydrate. The pop diet culture has turned the word Carbohydrate to mean breads, sweets, etc. Those are refined, or simple, carbohydrates. Not good. Complex carbohydrates, especially high fiber carbohydrates, are an important part of my diet. Anyone eating a High Protein High Fat diet for any extended period of time is so at risk for coronary artery disease, heart attack, and a whole bunch of other problems. You may be thinner, but you could die significantly sooner. That just sounds insane to me.

Long term Ketosis can be dangerous for some, and has intense side effects for many. This article might help: Ketones, Ketosis, and Ketogenic Diets, Weight Control, Weight Loss, Strategies for Weight Loss, Dieting, Holisticonline.com Also, Alcoholics should never go on a Ketogenic diet, and there are other negative effects that I was happy to learn about. The way I avoid it is I incorporate a Complex Carbohydrate (Fruit/Vegetable) mini-meal twice during the day. To learn more about Ketosis, here is a link that might be helpful:

Anyone ever feel Anorexic with this band?

Jacqui, Well said. I am not in a battle, or at war with my beautiful sweet body anymore. I had to come to that, for me, BEFORE I got my band. I did a lot of work around my dysfunctional thoughts about body and food and self. And there is now NOTHING I hate about my body. It is my dearest and most loyal friend, even at 207#. I got the band to better serve my body, myself, and others. I have no illusion that thinner will make me happier - tried that many times and it didn't work. I had to find Peace and Happiness and THEN I was ready to get healthy from a place of absolute love. It's very exciting and kind. Thanks for your post!

    ketosis

Yeah, I keep complex carbs on board, too - but not the nasty simple, refined carbs. Luckily I am not a sweets fan, and of course can't eat bread anymore. An occasional potato doesn't suck, but I can have like 3 bites.

Anyone ever feel Anorexic with this band?

Tulip, I had a period of Anorexia, and Exercise Bulimia and just plain old compulsive overeating that left me heavy. I use a process called "The Work" to deal with the thinking that was behind alot of it. If you want, I would be glad to send you a kit with how to use this simple, free tool, and a mini-version of the book about it called "Loving What Is" by Byron Katie. No charge - I just love to share it with other bandsters. Just email me your address at private@meetingyourmind.com and I will send it to you with a CD that explains it all too - it's excellent once you hear it in action and you do it with yourself (you can do it with others and that is very helpful too)
  21. I had a 39 BMI and got a AP Large. I am not sure why they choose large and small. I will have to ask. I have great restriction and started at 220ish. So I don't think the large will be a bad thing.
  22. Another great resource that is simple, easy and great for self-processing the thinking that leads to the feelings that lead to the fridge is "The Work". The book is "Loving What Is" by Byron Katie (she is awesome) and you can get all the information free on her website. www.thework.com. It seemed stupid when I first looked at it, but as you can tell by my name, it is become the single most life changing process I have every given myself!
