Where Are All The East Coasters?
allyray replied to Zedsmummy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Just to update, when I met with the anesthesiologist back in march, it was discovered thst I was type 2 diabetic, (my family dr hasn't done bloodwork on me for 5 years! Grrrrrr!!) so my surgery was postponed until my sugars levelled out. They have now and my surgery date is June 8th! No doubts about my decision now as I have been told that wls is the only thing that can possibly "reverse" the diabetes! Not that I'll be cured, but will be off my metformin!! I really would love to connect with some local people and hear about their experiences!!!!! -
Claiming Medical Expenses on Income Tax
allyray replied to KayGirl's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm not sure about if you go to Mexico, but my surgeon is 3 hours away from my home and I can claim mileage, and my hotel stay each trip. I would just ask your accountant. Btw, I'm in New Brunswick and have a date for my sleeve on June 8th! I was referred back in 2009, so it has been a long wait. What are the wait times in NL? Is the surgery covered by Medicare there? -
Has anyone watched A&E's show Intervention? Tonight's show is about a girl named Amy who suffers from bolemia! Wow. Food can have such a terrible grip on people in so many different ways! Just terrible what she and her family is going through!!!

Has AIC (Diabetic lowered/got normal nos) totally gone after sleeve surgery ?
allyray replied to shirleyjohn001's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi Shirley John. I have my daily sugars are between 7-8 and I am cleared for my surgery now. I haven't had another A1C since march 4th but she mentioned it should be between 6-7. She also mentioned that the surgery will most likley take care of my diabetes. It's really exciting thinking about the changes that are going to happen to us!!! Happy you have made the decision to have the surgery! -
Has AIC (Diabetic lowered/got normal nos) totally gone after sleeve surgery ?
allyray replied to shirleyjohn001's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi ... I was recently diagnosed with type 2 diabetes as well, back on march 4th at my last appointment with he anesthesiologist. They postponed my surgery until I got my sugars levelled out. My A1C was 9 at the time. It was all so new to me and extremely frightening to me because I am getting the surgery for the same reasons you are. At this time also, my mother is going through lots of issues with her body which was mainly caused by obesity and sedentary lifestyle she had when she was younger. She has kidney issues, heart disease, of course type 2 diabetes, etc... For these reasons I am determined to get this surgery done to prevent these type of things from happening to me when I'm older. Of course there are so many other things that could happen to me in the meantime that could affect my health but this I can do something about NOW! I have a date now(June 8th) but and also on a cancellation list as well. So hoping and praying I get it sooner than later! Good luck with managing your diabetes!! -
How bad is the hunger?
allyray replied to alindsey's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My date is June 8th as well. I gave up caffeine as well as pop(soda) back in November as well as stopped drinking with meals. My surgery was postponed back in march when they discovered I had type 2 diabetes but have since gotten my sugars under control and have been put on a cancellation list. So hoping I get a call sooner than June 8th. I'm ready now!! Good luck and keep reading these post on here. I find it very comforting as people seem to be very open and honest about the good and the bad experiences they have had so I feel very prepared. -
Anyone experience keytones in urine?
allyray replied to Shannon Piper's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
That's great!!! I have been waiting for my call again...since they put me off in March because of my diabetes, I was put back down the list. They told me that there were 20 patients ahead of me so it would be mid july before I would have my surgery, but she put me on the cancellation list because I can go on short notice. Hoping that call comes soon. Things get really busy here on the farm in the summer!!!! -
Are you from Canada?
-
Ok. Need some input here. I am just waiting for my call for a date for surgery. All the steps have been completed! My dilemma is this. My mother just had a mini stroke and is in the hospital and they also have found cancer in her bowel. So, basically I am torn. On one hand, I have been waiting for this surgery for 6 years and really need toget the ball rolling here. On the other hand, with my mothers health, I'm not sure I want to be laid up while she needs me. Not sure of her prognosis so hard to make a decision. What would you do? Would you postpone or cancel your surgery or go ahead and do it and hope for the best? Thank you. My heart is so torn!

Whst would you do in my situation?
allyray replied to allyray's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Well her cancer has just been found, although I had this sneaking suspicion she had it for quite sometime, but she is an 86 year old woman and was very hesitant about getting a scope and CT done because of her "old age"! I do have siblings, but I have always been her "go to" person. Saying that, I may have to step back and let them step in for a week or so. I really need to have this surgery as 3 weeks ago I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and I really want to get his under control before something else creeps up. She does live alone although she has agreed after the last couple of days that she needs as in home care when she returns home because she has lost so much of the use of her legs. You know, one don't the biggest reasons I wanted this surgery is my mother. I don't want my children to have to deal with these problems my mother has, which have all been weight related, except for the cancer. She was a large woman after she had children, and then got type 2 diabetes, then lost a kidney, eyes are bad, etc... I NEED to do something about this. On then other hand, I don't know if I could live with the guilt of not being there if something happened. She just wants me there. I guess I will just have to wait and see when my date is. I'm really hoping it's sooner than later. Even though she's elderly, I was just not thinking this would be an issue. Thanks for taking te time to give your opinion to a complete stranger (lol). You are the only people who can tell me this type of information regarding the practical side of the surgery, like recovery times, etc... You have been a great help!!! -
Can not do my surgery because my sugar is too high :(
allyray replied to esingso2005's topic in Rants & Raves
The explanation they gave me was that when your sugar levels are high, healing is more difficult after surgery... I've waited a long time for this so I guess I can wait a couple more months. I tested my sugars before Breakfast this am and they were 8.2...down from 13.1 less than 2 weeks ago. So I'm very happy with how the meds are helping things!! -
I need a set of glasses, because I just can't see it...

How many people kept Weight Loss Surgery a secret ?
allyray replied to shorty54's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had planned on not telling anyone but have told a few. I am still preop. Last week I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes so I am eating very different and excercising a lot so in sure the weight will start to come off before I have surgery so I plan on using the diabetes route for my excuse for losing weight! -

Where Are All The East Coasters?
allyray replied to Zedsmummy's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hi everyone. I'm from Sussex, NB. I am getting my sleeve done in Bathurst by Dr. Marc savoie. I was referred to dr beausoliel in Moncton as well a dr savoie back in 2009 and got my call for my initial consult on November 27, 2014 and just had my appointment with the anethesiologist on march 4, 2015. During the preop testing, they discovered I have type 2 diabetes, so my surgery is now on hold until my sugars level out. As far as the Moncton surgeon, dr. Beausoliel, they told me they couldn't even give me a time frame for when I would have had my initial consult, hence the decision to go to Bathurst. I couldn't wait another 2-3 years. Hoping to hear more stories about maritime sleevers!!! -

Just diagnosed type 2...questions..

Do you remember where to find that thread? I am not Bariatric Pal savy yet, so I'm not sure where to find things... Thanks -
Hi everyone. I had my last appointment with the anesthesiologist and the clinic this week and after all my pre op blood work/testing, they have diagnosed me as type 2 diabetic and can't do my surgery until my sugars level out. Last time my family physician did blood work on me was 5 years ago but never since (kind of upset about this but have to deal with this now). So stsrted metformin 2 days ago. Obviously nothing has changed yet besides the cramping from the medication but just wondering if anyone else out there has been in this situation so close to surgery and how long did it take for things to level out before they would allow you to have surgery. Thanks

So went to my last appointment yesterday before surgery, and I have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes so my surgery will be delayed until I get my sugars levelled out. Anyone else experience this before surgery during preop testing, etc..?
-
Thank you Jennifer. I have to say I was in total shock wen they told me yesterday. I was expecting them to give me a date. Anyhow I am expecting my family physician to prescribe Metphormin and I'll see how it works. Looking at the big picture, I'm glad they caught it before hand! Thanks for your response.

Starting out at age 45? How common?
allyray replied to KS123's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I'm 45 and waiting for my surgery date! -
I gave up all soda/pop almost 2 months ago and yesterday found a bottle in my storage room. I feel like it's beckoning me to go down and pour a big tall glass with ice!! I thought I had that beat awhile ago. I gave it up to prepare for my upcoming surgery!!
