    questions about surgery

Hi.... I was not cathetered. I ended up staying in the hospital 2 days because I had a difficult time waking up. My sister was the only one allowe to be with me in the pre-operative room and then when I was brought into my room. As for the recovery room, no one was allowed. Annamarie

    What are your food stages?

Hellooooo I was the same as your schedule. Worked out great. When I was finally able to eat, I was only allowed to eat 2 teaspoons every 2 hours. To this date, I have continued this way of eating. Still works great. I just had my labs done so I know i am eating enough Protein. I do not, however, drink Protein shakes because they did not settle well in my tummy. Puree/Soft foods were the same. At this time I was eating refried Beans w/shredded cheese because it was soft. Have a fun journey.

    Knives in my stomach!

Hi. That knife pain, tell me, is your tongue White in color and looks like a yeasty paste? if so, you have Thrush. I had this so bad that when I swallowed, It felt like knives going down my throat and into my stomach. I was on two different types of antibiotics to clear this. I was also out of work for 2 weeks due to this pain. Hope this helps. Annamarie
  4. hI... I, too, work in an office of women. I was over 300 pounds, and I didn't care who knew because this is MY decision. I am very proud that I chose the Sleeve. I wanted to make myself healthier and had tried many different ways to loose weight. I did not have any problems, even when returing to work. They were very proud of me for my decision and I was actually an inspriation, because they all started eating healthier. If you are worried about what others will say and think....just remember, it is YOUR body, not theirs. There will be some who say "easy way out", when it really is not. Just let them know it is a TOOL and it is YOUR responsiblity to get yourself healthier. Enjoy this new journey.

Please Tell Me It Gets Better...

Evening.... You will get through this, I am only 4 months out and still unable to eat a full meal. I only eat about 800 calories per day. From day 1, I never drank another Protein drink. They were gross and made me sick. So I stopped and found other ways to get my protein in. Just breathe and relax, it is only a passing problem. You will survive this and will look back saying "wonder why I was complaining". lol This is a new journey and you will be fine.

    Level of Help Post-Op

Hi. Everyone is different. I needed two weeks of recovery because I ended up with Thrush, which was painful, but it went away. My sister only needed one week. For lifting, I was unable to lift more than 8 pounds until I had my 30 day post-op appoinment. You can do what you need when you have the strength. A week may be all you need to start, but again, your body will tell you what you need. I needed alot of rest, because I am a very energetic person, so after having surgery, I was wiped out and my body sure let me know it. I, too, live alone, but my daughter was just down the street about 10 minutes away and i did fine. I also did not babysit my grand-daughter for one month because of the lifting restrictions. Hope this helps.

    Caloric Intake

Hi. I am 4 months out and have just started to intake about 800 calories a day. My dietician has recommended a 1200 calorie a day limit, but I have not even reached that. She is not concerned, but everyone is different. I got on the scale again today and now am 229. I am so excited, I loose about 1-2 pounds a week which is slow but successful. My doctor and dietician think I am doing great. Whereas my friends who have had this done think I should be drinking more calories to make up for what I am not getting by food. What the do not understand is I cannot put anymore food or liquid in my stomach. I go until my body says STOP. Do not feel rushed if you are not getting in what your nutritionist wants, it is your body, just remember to eat and drink responsibliy and stay hydrated. Annamarie
  9. I had a lot of the pain but it was from the gas that they put into my stomach so they can see inside more clearly. I just made sure I walked a super lot. I did not take any pain medications at all. Where did you have your surgery? Here in the states or in Mexico??? As for the incision, may I ask how many inches it is? I have to incision sites that are 1/2 inch in size and two smaller (looks like a puncture circle wound that is less than 1/4 inch in size)...... Everyone I read about seems to have very big incisions? Why, were they not done microscopically? Let me know, little curious here. Thanks,

    3 months out and pregnant

Congrats !! Please make sure you talk with your dietician to make sure you get the right amount of calories in for you and the baby. I don't know of anyone this has happened to. Can't understand how you become more fertile, but oh well....things happen. Again, Congrats !!!

    Gastric sleeve Dumping

Mine was Tuna Fish. I was at work, I tried only a teaspoon and within minutes I was nauseated, very cold, and ended up going home because I got so sick. I have not tried Tuna Fish since.....too afraid ...I had my surgery on 11/21/14....

    Weak...

Your body is still adjusting to having much less calorie intake than before the surgery. Just make sure you drink plenty of fluids so you do not dehydrate. If it continues, please contact your surgeon and they may want to see you.

    Constipation

Here is the one thing I learned, everyone told me to take Fiber......If you read the instructions, you should be drinking an 8 oz glass of Water. Being your stomach cannot handle 8 oz of water in one shot, Fiber IS NOT the answer. There is many different ways you can alleviate this problem. I use Molasses (1tsp 2x a day) seems to work okay. I was also told to use Magnesium Citrate (but be at home when you do this, it will clean you out). Miralax powder 1/2 cup in 20 oz of water (drink slowly throughout the day (not in one shot). Fiber actually binds you because you need alot of water in order to make fiber work. Believe me, I learned the hard way. So I watch the amount of fiber in meals, because I don't drink alot of water with my meals (actually none with meals) Hope this helps.

    Surgery was yesterday

Hi. You just had your surgery. Your stomach is swollen in there, that is why you cannot get alot of Fluid into your new stomach. In about 3-4 weeks you stomach will start to finally become a normal size and you will be able to eat a little more. I had my surgery on 11/21/14 and can only seem to get just a little over 800 calories per day in me. Just a few weeks back I was at 600 calories per day. When I started out, I was eating 2 teaspoons every 2 hours. Believe me, it made me full and my tummy would hurt. I just remember that we now have a new tummy,, the size of a baby's tummy. Just feed yourself like you would a newborn. It will eventually become easier. Take your time, enjoy your journey......it is amazing..................... Also, FYI...........you will not loose a lot during the first 2 weeks, but after that it comes off like butter and you will be a whole new person that you will love. Annamarie

    People change

I know the feeling. But......I haven't changed how I feel about those who never talked to me before. When they say how good I look, I just say "Thank you" and go about my way. If they were not good enough to talk to me when I was 300 pounds, why bother talking to me know. Again, I have not changed I am still the same person, just my body image has changed. Don't become friends with someone that couldn't be friends prior. Those are not friends at all. You will make new friends along the way that see you for who you are now and never knew you before.....those are the people I would start being friends with. Please don't change for them, change for you.,

HI. Three words: LOTS OF SUGAR. Sugar breaks down into what? FAT...... This could be why you are not losing weight. Carbs and Sugars = NOT GOOD> Sorry to be blunt. Annamarie.

    slowing down hair loss

Hi. I have shorter hair and have just started loosing my hair. I take 10,000 mg of Biotin daily an make sure I eat the right amount of Protein. I don't loose alot, and it is not noticable, but I like my hair and want to keep it. I also have someone massage my head to stimulate my hair growth too.
  19. Hi.. I had my surgery 11/21/14 and I am just now starting to loose my hair. It is not significant that you can even tell. I just kow because i see it in my shower... Otherwise, you would never know. I take 10,000mg of Biotin daily which is most likely why it is not that bad.
  20. Hi. First thing, you are only 9 days out. Relax, Breathe and enjoy this new self. You will finally start noticing a change about 1 to 1.5 months out. I had my surgery on 11/21/14 and have lost 69 pounds. Please do not get discouraged, which I see alot do. Being only 9 days out your body is still adjusting to the surgery. One thing I can say is make sure you do not eat solid food until your surgeon states. Right now I assume you are only on liquids. Remember, you have a new "baby" tummy. Treat it just like you would if you were a baby and starting on new foods/liquids. Again, enjoy this beautiful ride. Annamarie
  21. I am 3 months out and have loads of energey. Are you drinking and eating enough? I know as a hairdresser you cannot eat at your station. I eat every 2 hours (small amounts). Keep a log of what you eat daily, per my dietician, we should be consuming 1200 calories daily......are you? What about exercise, I know it is probably not thought of after a day on your feet, but even just 20 minutes would/may help. Annamarie.

    Drinking Fluids with Full Liquid

You should be drinking your Water either 30 minutes before the meal or 30 minutes after. With your new stomach, if you drink your water while you eat your soup, you are just washing the nutrients you need away and you become hungry quicker. So, per my surgeon and dietician......no matter what you drink your water 30 minutes before or 30 minutes after your meal.
  23. Hi.... I had my surgery 11/21/14....... I know I am hungry 2 hours after eating becaue I trained myself to eat small meals every 2 hours. If you are hungry, it could be because you are not getting enough Protein in your meals. It also could be that you are actually thirsty. I sometimes will drink first, because your body does not know the difference between thirst and hunger. Hope this helps. Annamarie...

    POST OP DRAIN

I agree with Samuelsmom. I, too, did not have one. I had my surgery in Hartford, CT. All my friend's who have had the surgery also did not receive a drain. What I can tell you is that some of us have 5 scars whereas I only have 4. I was told I prepped very well. So talk with your surgeon and he/she will give you all the answers you need before the surgery.
  25. I was sleeved on 11/21/14. I just did my bloodwork (9 vials) they were checking everything........
